As a future educator, I will foster a safe, nurturing, and active learning environment by getting to know my students. In the first few days of classes, we will create our classroom policies as a class. I will spend these days telling my students about myself and having them introduce themselves to create a class community. It is imperative that our classroom expectations and consequences are clear and fair to ensure classroom safety. I believe that there is a difference between management and discipline, and establishing the rules early on, with student input, helps a teacher better manage her classroom while disciplining when necessary. When teachers are passive, students will take over the class very quickly. They know when a teacher is not going to follow through with consequences, and it only takes one time before the possession of the classroom management goes from the teacher’s hand, to the students. Students are observant and they know which teachers will let them take over the class. Losing this control early on, makes it that much harder to rein in later. At the opposite end, teachers who are too demanding of their students, because their students to lose interest in their studies, when they become too focused on the aggressive personality of their teacher. Students need to know that you believe in their abilities. If you were to look up the definition of authoritative, you would see that the synonyms are; reliable, dependable, trustworthy, assured, confident, and assertive, all aspects that make up a strong educator. My students will know that I care and believe in them. I will openly root for their success, progress and growth. I will give them the tools they need to succeed, and I believe that an effective authoritative educator can do just that. While I do believe in classroom control, this does not mean that I will micromanage every aspect of my student’s day. During this tie in young adolescent development, our students are preparing their morals and individual personalities. It is our job as educators to steer them in a way that is acceptable in our society.
