Scholarly Writing and Plagiarism
Writing properly can be very challenging for a new student embarking on being a scholarly, professional writer. Before starting assignments, it is important to read very broadly about the main topics of the assignment, and also read the specific chapters listed in the assignment, because they will guide a student’s thoughts in developing a paper.
After writing a paper, Grammarly and SafeAssign, located on the Walden website, help edit a student’s work. Grammarly looks at grammatical errors, such as punctuation and spelling, while SafeAssign looks for text that might be plagiarized. It was helpful for me to identify some of the mistakes made while writing my paper, and I will certainly use Grammarly more often during my writing process.

As explained in the SafeAssign guide, highlighted areas compare the article with other articles for similarities. According to the assignment that was to paraphrase Patricia O’Conner’s post, the final report from SafeAssign did not show any plagiarization. I believe using SafeAssign will help me protect against plagiarism whenever a reference is attached to a paper.
In order for me to avoid plagiarism, I start by writing the paper with what I know about the topic without the influence of other writers. Whenever an area needs to be emphasized or supported, I search for an article to support the facts. I then read the content of the material to understand the writer’s message, then I write it in my own words, making sure what I write is properly cited to give credit to the author. Other times, I use direct quotation and properly cite the reference in my text to avoid any plagiarism. I also make sure the reference appears on the Reference
The chapter also goes into explaining the writing process itself in greater detail. Writers are encouraged to first make sure they fully understand their assignment, before then moving onto throwing around ideas (such as by brainstorming, clustering, ect), developing a thesis statement, and scheduling
Scores of students share the same sentiments about the writing process; it can prove to be an insurmountable challenge. Like any other job, creating an excellent paper only becomes easier if the person has the correct tools and knowledge of how to use them. Superior writing does not happen by chance. Essays are deliberate, focused ways of conveying a message to the audience. In order to deliver a paper that clearly communicates with the reader; the author must go through a process that is not linear but rather recursive. The work is often rewritten, reorganized and rethought before text is produced. On my path to becoming a successful writer, I was required to overcome my initial fears and weaknesses, display growth in my compositions, to master various forms of prompt, and to utilize strategies that will assist me in all future writing endeavors.
Grammarly and Safe Assign were two writing resources used this week are two online writing aids that I had never used prior to entering Walden. I learned about Grammarly while completing the online orientation and have used it ever since. However, since downloading it from the site it has been a little annoying when I try to use a word document for things like my grocery list because it wants me to correct all my abbreviations. Prior to entering class, I deemed myself a competent writer. However, I quickly discovered that my writing involved mediocre writing precepts. In contrast to the principles of scholarly discourse, my writing held the tenets of conversational writing and failed to meet academic standards. Furthermore, much of my poor writing was akin to a deep-rooted habit that I found humbling to admit and challenging to correct. Passive voice, unneeded words, long sentences, were a few of the obstacles that impeded my journey to effective writing. However, using peer reviews and an editing checklist I slowly began improving my skills as a competent writer. I also found that reading concerning writing provided supplementary methods to improve my skills as a scholarly writer. Throughout my high school English class career, I have learned an array of concepts. Beginning with freshman year, I reviewed the basic concepts of writing and how to respond to literature. Then, in sophomore year I discovered how to write in a formal, educated manner. So far in junior year, I have learned different approaches to analyzing literary works. The key topics I have learned in high school English classes are the steps to writing and polishing a paper, how to write formally and common style and grammar mistakes.

In this journal, I will reflect my initial journal from the start of the course. I will briefly discuss how my academic writing changing over the duration of this course. I will also discuss the areas I need to improve in the most and lastly, the areas I need further guidance and strategies to improve that were identified.
This goal of this experiment was to learn what plagiarism is and how to prevent it as well as practice summarizing and citing in order to avoid plagiarism.
After completing the writing course, I came to realize not only did I need this course, but students here at Walden should enroll in this class. There are professional writers whom do not always write correctly; and there is room for improvement (Walden Writing Center, 2015). At the onset of this course I identified a couple of writing areas I could use help in; however, as the course went on, I also found helpful tips which enabled me to further my academic writing. Consequently, each week I learned different writing techniques and implement them into my assignments. After taking the graduate writing course, I am confident my academic writing will meet the standards for Walden’s dissertation.
Dr. Karen Jackson the director of the writing studio was our speaker on professional writing. She explained, that if you do these three things correctly that you would not plagiarize. Paraphrasing is when you use the authors ideas but put them in your own words. You will also give credit to the author for their idea. Direct quotation is when you are stating the exact words. This means you will write it exactly how it was said. Lastly, summarizing is choosing the important information from a text and summing it up in your own words. I learned that you still have to include in-text citation for summarizing as well. I picked up a few tips of my own over the years that were not brought up during this presentation. 'The type of Plagiarisms that will be the hardest for me to avoid. The hardest type of Plagiarism that will be the hardest for me to avoid is "Patchwork Plagiarism",because I will read a lot of different information about a topic and write down the important things that I fell stands out. And then i will sometimes catch my self writing word for word. And the way I plan to avoid being a 'Patchwork" or any other type of Plagiarist . I will First read and collect my sources,then I will take my notes, i will proceed by Integrating the information into my own words then I will carefully look at the original source to make sure i don't Plagiarize .And then finally an most importantly I will cite the Author's.
Proper notetaking while doing research will help avoid plagiarism. Notes should include quotation marks around any exact words taken from sources.
This essay will discuss a wide range of developing academic study skills, used in academic writing. It will also demonstrate the benefits of expanding one’s knowledge of these studies and how it can aid the user in terms of both academic and professional progression.
I have read the Guide to Avoiding Plagiarism published by the student affairs office. I understand what is expected of me with respect to properly citing sources, and how to avoid representing the work of others as my own. I wrote the material in this paper, except for such material that is quoted or indented and properly cited to indicate the sources of the material. I understand that using the words of others, and simply tagging the sentence, paragraph, or section with a tag to the copied source does not constitute proper citation and that if such material is used verbatim or paraphrased it must be
