The North and South were two very different regions at the time of The Civil War. They have very different economies, geography, social influences, and transportation methods. This is why many people are very passionate about what side they chose at the time. The North and South had one of the most bloody wars in history. The North and South both are very unique regions.

The Great Depression is one of the most misunderstood events in not only American history but also Great Britain, France, Germany, and many other industrialized nations. It also has had important consequences and was an extremely devastating event in America. It was the longest and most severe depression ever experienced by the industrialized Western world. When the New York Stock Exchange crashed in October 1929, the United States dropped sharply into a major depression. The world was in wide demand for agricultural goods during World War I, but they had rapidly decreased after the war and rural America experienced a severe depression throughout most of the 1920's and even on into the 1930's.

Even though the North and the South origins were both from Europe, their customs and living habits were different. The North and the South began to notice these differences as they broke away from Britain in the Revolutionary War. The North and South emerged into two different regions, due to their various differences. These differences included the geography, the economy, the social and classification status, and transportation.

The North and the South emerged as two distinctly different sides during the antebellum period. The major differences that emerged during this time revolved around geography/climate, transportation, society and economy. Under these categories involve population, industry and culture. These differences are what shaped each region during this time period.

Although they settled on the same coast, due to vastly different geographys, the North became commercial while the South focused on agriculture. A warmer climate meant tobacco flourished in southern colonies. Because of this, the South was able to exploit the tobacco industry making it a very valuable cash crop. However, in the North, poorer soil and a colder climate made growing crops much more difficult. As a result, northern colonies quickly realized they needed to trade natural resources, contrary to the southern colonies crops. A woodsier geography in the North meant great trading of lumber. Exceeding amounts of lumber meant a lot of ships were made, causing the North to thrive on a commercial economy. In the South, rivers allowed for easy shipment of crops. This meant southern colonies could thrive on selling crops back to their European states, making them flourish with an agricultural economy.

The English Colonies diversified greatly in their social surroundings throughout the Northern and Southern territories due to the differences in economic productivity, infant mortality, and marriage. The economies of the colonies widely differed from North to South. Southern colonies that included the Chesapeake colony especially, had the large scale farm as the main backbone for profit. Soil was rich and the temperature change was not as rampant as the North. Sugar and Tobacco demand in Europe allowed much of these large farms to expand and become extremely common in the South. During the Antebellum period the south was pretty different from the north. In the south most were supporters of the Democrats. Many of them believed in slavery and wanted a small, state run government. Unlike the whig party, which wanted a government that could intervene and help the economy when necessary, they did not want the goernment to intervene in state matters. They wanted individual rights and mainly didn't want the government intervening when it came to slavery because their economy depended on it.
