Difference between men and women

The structure of men and women’s brain differ, which is the underlying cause to the differing communication skills (“Men and Women”). The reason gender effect ways of speaking is because women and men communicate differently. Women are more sympathetic and men tend to be more problem solvers. For example, women wallow in their problems and constantly talk about them, whereas the men find a solution to the problem or leave it alone. According to Deborah Tannen book, You Just Don’t Understand, She mentions that “Trying to solve a problem or fix a trouble focuses on the message level of talk”. (52) It means that solving a problem is an expression of understanding; having women and men more understanding of their use of language will decrease the complaint “You just don’t understand.”

According to statistics, poor communication or lack of communication is the leading cause of failure for a relationship or marriage. Men and women find it hard to share information and it affects their everyday lives. Deborah Tannen’s essay “Sex, Lies, and Conversation” discusses how men and women communicate differently. Tannen discusses that the body language of men and women use during conversation, she concluded that men tend to be quit with a woman, and the fear women have being pushed away while the men aren’t in touch with the women’s feeling. In knowing these differences men and women can improve how to communicate with each other.

For years in our society there has been a lot of controversy over the differences in men and women. Are they equal? What exactly are the real differences? Do these differences affect what each gender is capable of doing in their everyday lives? A philosopher of the nineteenth century, Wilhem von Humboldt once wrote,

     Biology too plays a major role in the differences between male and female. Genetically, there are differing chromosomes. XY for male and XX for female. These chromosome differences account for the physical differences that men and women have. In dealing with body composition, males are more likely to be taller and more muscular. Women are typically less concerned with power more concerned with forming and maintaining relationships, whereas men are more concerned with their position. Girls and women feel it is crucial that they be liked by their peers, a form of involvement that focuses on symmetrical connection. Boys and men feel it is essential that they be respected by their peers, as form of connection that focuses on asymmetrical position. A woman's communication will tend to be more focused on building and sustaining relationships. Men on the other hand, will place a higher priority on power, their communication styles will reflect their desire to maintain their position in the relationship.

In the United States, our concept of gender, and the differences between men and women, have deep traditional roots. Men are supposed to be strong individuals, who support and defend their families. Women are seen as nurturing, and motherly, more gentle and tame. We believe so strongly that the two genders are entirely separate, with such completely different traits, that it almost seems that men and women are just born with different qualities.

Molly Edmonds, a writer for How Stuff Works, has explored the realm of the brains in men and women. She has found that men's brains are actually bigger than those in women.
