The structure of men and women’s brain differ, which is the underlying cause to the differing communication skills (“Men and Women”). A study was conducted to examine the structural differences of men and women’s brains and the results provided an explanation to why men and women behave differently (“Men and Women”).
The first difference is how they listen to people talking. Women love to make “listener noises such as ‘mhm,’ ‘uhuh,’ and ‘yeah.’” They do this to show “I’m with you” (Tannen332). On the other hand, men listen in silence. When men are silent it usually is because they are trying to interpret the information. Another reason for a men’s silence is when they go into their “cave” because they are upset or stressed. Women misinterpret a man’s silence and they imagine horrible things such as “he hates me, he doesn’t love me, he is leaving me forever.” A women’s silence means what she’s about to say is going to hurt them or she doesn’t want to talk to them. If they can realize they have different ways of communicating then there wouldn’t be many worries or
Since women are naturally emotionally inept due to them being the child bearer they strive to deal with their emotions internally by changing their emotional response. While men are known to be emotionally detached and less expressive they seek external coping mechanisms such as drinking and drugs. With that, it has predisposed me to believe that men and women serve to compliment each other in relationships and in marriage due to their oppositional attributes. By providing qualities that the other lacks. This exemplifies how our socially constructed understanding of gender plays a role in the foundation of learning other disciplines and how we perceive the opposite
Tannen Deborah acknowledges that men are in a completely divers standard than women. In the article “But What Do You Mean?” by Tannen Deborah sees that the fundamental differences between men
Have you ever asked yourself why people are different from each other? There is a lot of differences such as intelligence, opinions, appearances, personalities, and genders which, in my opinion, are the most important one. Genders usually represent the differences and also similarities between female and male, or women and men. In general, men usually have different responsibilities and duties as women. From history to modern time, the differences between women and men has changed a lot. It’s nearly 70 years ago, that fight for women’s suffrage began in the United States. The Women’s Movement is a movement to combat sexual discrimination and to gain full legal, economic, vocational, educational and social rights and
The reason gender effect ways of speaking is because women and men communicate differently. Women are more sympathetic and men tend to be more problem solvers. For example, women wallow in their problems and constantly talk about them, whereas the men find a solution to the problem or leave it alone. According to Deborah Tannen book, You Just Don’t Understand, She mentions that “Trying to solve a problem or fix a trouble focuses on the message level of talk”. (52) It means that solving a problem is an expression of understanding; having women and men more understanding of their use of language will decrease the complaint “You just don’t understand.”
According to statistics, poor communication or lack of communication is the leading cause of failure for a relationship or marriage. Men and women find it hard to share information and it affects their everyday lives. Deborah Tannen’s essay “Sex, Lies, and Conversation” discusses how men and women communicate differently. Tannen discusses that the body language of men and women use during conversation, she concluded that men tend to be quit with a woman, and the fear women have being pushed away while the men aren’t in touch with the women’s feeling. In knowing these differences men and women can improve how to communicate with each other.
For years in our society there has been a lot of controversy over the differences in men and women. Are they equal? What exactly are the real differences? Do these differences affect what each gender is capable of doing in their everyday lives? A philosopher of the nineteenth century, Wilhem von Humboldt once wrote,
Biology too plays a major role in the differences between male and female. Genetically, there are differing chromosomes. XY for male and XX for female. These chromosome differences account for the physical differences that men and women have. In dealing with body composition, males are more likely to be taller and more muscular. Males also have testosterone, the male sex hormone. It is said that males with high levels are more confrontational and smile less. Women that have low levels of estrogen, the female sex hormone, are said to be more disagreeable and confrontational. Maybe because men have such a huge advantage over women by being physically larger, they are supposed to be more aggressive and women having less physical strength are supposed to be the nurturers.
Women are typically less concerned with power more concerned with forming and maintaining relationships, whereas men are more concerned with their position. Girls and women feel it is crucial that they be liked by their peers, a form of involvement that focuses on symmetrical connection. Boys and men feel it is essential that they be respected by their peers, as form of connection that focuses on asymmetrical position. A woman's communication will tend to be more focused on building and sustaining relationships. Men on the other hand, will place a higher priority on power, their communication styles will reflect their desire to maintain their position in the relationship.
In the United States, our concept of gender, and the differences between men and women, have deep traditional roots. Men are supposed to be strong individuals, who support and defend their families. Women are seen as nurturing, and motherly, more gentle and tame. We believe so strongly that the two genders are entirely separate, with such completely different traits, that it almost seems that men and women are just born with different qualities.
Molly Edmonds, a writer for How Stuff Works, has explored the realm of the brains in men and women. She has found that men's brains are actually bigger than those in women. The reasoning for this is not necessarily that men are smarter but that women have a bigger limbic cortex and frontal lobes which control problem solving, decision making, and emotions; hence the reason why women show emotions show much more than men do and are much more decisive. Men however, have bigger parietal lobes which involves space perception and the amygdala, this is responsible for sexual and social behavior (Edmonds 2). Women's brains are also more complexly set up and work faster than men's brains. Women think with white matter, this consists of more connections between the neurons. These neurons are also closely packed together; this explains why women
According to Gray, men also need to be aware that women like to share and talk things through in a non-solution-oriented way (35). Man need to also understand that when their spouse is troubled, depressed or upset, he needs to make her feel loved even when she can not love herself (Gray 35).
Knowing the differences in the brain begins to give some understanding on how and why females and males learn differently. There are many basic differences in learning. Like stated previously females are better at verbal skills which makes them better at reading and writing and causes them to use words as they learn, and males are better
Although there is a lot of writings about the differences between males and females biologically and psychologically and socially. Because of that, it will be hard to have a stable and constant results. Even when the biological differences are more prominent, the other social and psychological differences are still unfinished matter of debate. There was supposed -until recently- that psychological differences is the major differences which are the results of the biological composition. Thus, women cannot possess some mental capabilities. These views haven't changed since only a short period. Although it is well known that the women's brains are smaller than the brains of
