DIFFERENCE IN COMPETENCIES BETWEEN ADN AND BSN A nurse is a healthcare professional who is trained care for sick. The key roles in nursing are promotion of health and prevention of illness, and also education, research, advocacy, health system management and promotion of safe environment. There are two different categories of nurses based on educational level. One is an Associate Degree Nurse (ADN), a 2 year program and other a Baccalaureate Degree Nurse (BSN), a four year program. Though educational programs are different, the students of each program have to pass the same NCLEX-RN examination to practice as nurses.. 160) Knowledge elevates the power of critical thinking. Critical thinking is very essential to work in areas such as Intensive Care Units, Emergency Care Units. Assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation are best done by a BSN than an ADN because of the power of critical thinking. The skills of critical thinking, better problem solving, and development of clinical judgment are important for increase patient acuity. Four years of study makes them good communicators. Good communication is a key part of nursing. An effective communication helps to build a therapeutic relationship. Studies have also found that nurses prepared at the baccalaureate level have stronger communication and problem solving skills (Johnson, 1988) and a higher proficiency in their ability to make nursing diagnoses and evaluate nursing interventions (Giger & Davidhizar, 1990). Quality of Care BSN can provide quality care because of better critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. They also take leadership in giving quality care.
