Differences Between Canada And The United States

Canada and the United States of America are two neighboring countries who besides the border share numerous other key aspects. Though similar in beliefs and culture the two countries are far from alike. Their legal structure particularly the penal system is one of most significant boundaries between Canada and the United States. Though not perfect, it's absolutely clear that Canada has the far more superior legal system.

Culture Language In Canada they speak English and French. Music In Canada they like the same type of music. The culture of Canada is that the music is about the Canada and the north.

The federal government has full control over the military. I feel like this makes a huge impact on my life because if the military isn’t run properly and they make a mistake I could loose my life. The Federal Government has a lot of things to take care of but this is a very big one. The military is in charge of keeping the people in the country safe but also Canada has allies and sometimes Canada will use the military to keep those allies safe, even when it doesn’t affect us. Some people would argue that’s not right and some people would argue that it is.

For example, while America gives the title “President” to their leader, Canada titles their leader “Prime Minister”. Basically, a president is elected by the people and is separate from the country's legislative body, and a prime minister is a member of the legislative body who is chosen by that legislature to be its leader. The president of the United States is Barack Obama, and the Prime Minister of Canada is Stephen Harper. Another difference between the two countries is their type of government. The United States is a Federal Republic and Canada is a Constitutional monarchy with parliament type. In the United States, the U.S. Congress makes the laws, and in Canada, the Cabinet makes the laws.

When it comes to certain qualities and attributes of the United States of America and Canada, many people residing elsewhere fail to tell the difference. The accents of people from certain parts of both countries, for instance, are so incredibly indistinguishable that they baffle any and everyone. Besides this one factor, they even share some comparable cultural characteristics, such as driving on the right side of the road and cherishing the same basic human rights to the utmost importance. Likewise, there are several similarities between multiple aspects of the countries’ respective governments, including within their individual established frameworks, political systems, and their divisions of authorities and duties. These could potentially point out a reason as to why Canada and the United States are immensely successful in their particular objectives, and are on their paths to achieving their long-term goals with difficult to accomplish, yet beneficial visions. After all, they are both either on the way to becoming or currently are two of world’s leading superpowers (Financial Post). However, there is not just one particular infallible way to rule a country and push it to further advancement simultaneously. In fact, each country works and functions differently, which is primarily due to individual background and history. Canada is a centralized federation which means the majority of power lies with the federal government, but the provincial governments have some power too. There are ten provincial governments in Canada, one for each province. The provincial governments are responsible for “public schooling, health and social services, highways, the administration of justice, and local government.” Because of Canada’s large provinces, their provincial governments are given more power than what is the case in many western federalist systems. For example, the United States has much smaller states and many more of them, and their state governments have less autonomy than the Canadian provincial governments.

Canada is a democratic country. Canadians elect the parliament and the Prime Minister. But because Canada is a market economy, jobs, prices and the economic situation depends on big businesses. The fact that American companies own such a huge part of Canadian industry that it puts them in control of business in Canada. In other words a straight economical dependence, where Canadian people are no longer in control of things in their own country. A good example is a situation when American corporation buys a Canadian company. They take Canadian workers only for low paid positions. Most of the managers, accountants, sales executives who really control big business operations in Canada are Americans. Most of the times the specialists who work in American owned companies in Canada are also brought from America on contracts. In this case Canada is too depended to act the way it wants without support from the U.S.

The Canadian govern themselves in a significant way that is different in comparison to the American government. The two differences I chose to contrast and elaborate on is the difference between culture and the various forms of power. Canada and American have many different policies in the government regarding culture. Canada is a multicultural country; on the other hand, the U.S is mainly a culture of one basics language and culture. Canada has two main languages; these two languages consist of English and French.

Canada is made up of ten provinces and three territories. The territories are Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon. The Provinces include: Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Quebec, and Prince Edward Island. Yukon. The major difference between a Canadian province and a Canadian territory is that a province is a creation of the Constitution Act (17 April 1982), while a territory is created by federal law. Thus, the federal government has more direct control over the territories" (One World, 2014). Ottawa is the capital city if Canada. For that question, I believe that there is nothing to discuss. Whoever decided to come to Canada knew that they would be able to maintain their culture, their beliefs, and they cannot be discriminated for those. However, they have to follow the Canadian law, or they can face the consequences. There is no room for compromise if there is a difference in values. We have to remember that many people, especially women, escaped their countries so they can be safe from practices that are degrading or endangers them. What I like in Canada, is that everyone is under one flag, the Canadian. Everyone can be proud and maintain their own traditions and heritage, but we are Canadians

Both United States and Canada are on the America continental, therefore the United States and Canada are in close geographical location and in the neighborhoods, most people think that culturally they are same .But this is not true. Despite all similarities between these two countries, there are many differences between them.

If one were to look at similarities, it would be more reasonable to compare Grenada and Toronto, however since Toronto does not represent Canada, there are mostly differences. One of the differences that differentiate each country so largely, are the differences in education. In terms of quality, quantity, and popularity, Canada outclasses Grenada by a landslide. St. George is one of the main universities provided in Grenada and, “6,022 students attended St. George’s University in 2016” (University, S. 2018).
