Differences Between Ethiopia And America

I’ve lived in places where healthcare was inaccessible, where doctors were not fully equipped with the tools necessary to preform regular checkups, and where people died chilling deaths from misdiagnoses or lack there of. I was born in Khartoum, Northern Sudan as my parents were in transit to come to the land of the free from Eritrea. In the midst of its 30-year war with Ethiopia, both of my parents fled the compromised country at the age of 18 and 20. The war had made it difficult for children to attend school, therefore my parents fled with what would be considered a middle school education. After two years and through much treachery, we successfully made it to America.

Whenever traveling to different countries they notice every culture is different from their own. Every country has different cultures but many times there can be similarities, For example, if you travel to both Honduras and Dominican Republic you notice a lot of differences from the way they dress to the food they eat. Some of the values of the culture I visited were the religious values. They were all Christians and most of them were from different parts of Africa. They believe in god and believe that he was the king of the universe, I could tell by the way they sing and the way they participated. They also believe in Jesus, based on how they had the statue of Jesus in the center of the church. They also saw each other as a community, as a church. They all looked really united and even though many of them didn’t knew each other they great each other like they did, because that probably might be a norm for them.

For example, we cannot judge the culture of Chinese people today in present day China as we judged the culture of the people who used to settle in the same country. The difference I see between US and The Gambia is traditional healers. As I know there is no traditional approaches to an illness and health in the U.S. There is alternative medicine approach, but it is even not closer to traditional healers because practitioner in this area have a health related education. In western culture, people believe modern medicine and medical science so traditional healing is not counting as a medical or scientific treatment anymore in these culture. Another difference is there is shortage of drug and medicine that is not an issue at all in the U.S. Medicines, especially for special case medicines, are very expensive and some people may not afford it, but in general there is no drug/medicine shortage in the US.
