When Wilson won the election from Taft Roosevelt, the Democrat party had more seats in the Congress than Republican. During the Wilson’s first inauguration, he did not address the racism problem in the country. Even thought democracy means social or political equality for all people, but Wilson extended the White Supremacy during his presidency (Dictionary.com). When Wilson made fourteen points to end the Great War, black leaders asked him to add the fifteen points to end the racial discrimination; Wilson refused it. However, the two leaders failed to end the racial discrimination, black suffered from lynching, torture, and segregation. In the first two decades of the twentieth century the national political scene reflected a growing American belief in the ideas of the Progressive movement. This movement was concerned with fundamental social and economic reforms and gained in popularity under two presidents. Yet Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson espoused two different approaches to progressive reform. And each one was able to prevail upon congress to pass legislation in keeping with his own version of the progressive dream. These two people, although they had different principles in mind, had one goal: to make changes to the nation for the better of the people and the country. Wilson also appointed southern segregationists to separate employees. He did draft many black soldiers into the army, hundreds of thousands in fact, however he kept them segregated and put them in black regiments with white (usually strictly racist) officers. He was heavily criticised by both sides. African Americans believed his actions were discriminatory and he was believed to take segregation too far, however others believed that he didn’t restrict black employment enough, especially within government. From looking at his actions, he didn’t impose much legislation which was specifically targeted at African Americans, however his enthusiastic support of segregation meant that it became an issue for blacks in both their everyday lives to the progression of their civil rights.
The late 19th century to early 20th century is characterized as the Progressive Era. This is when reformers strived for better welfare policies and more rights for the people. Although three presidents reigned during this movement, only two are known for their policies. Theodore Roosevelt, the arrogant and egomaniacal president spoke out of ambition, whereas Woodrow Wilson, the more morally inclined leader spoke out of actual desire. Progress is not something that comes very quickly. It is a gradual process that takes time, in the interest of our country and the Progressive Era, more than a decade. The presidents of this time, Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson, were like chefs developing a recipe for the betterment of the United States. Every act that was passed, each decision that was made, was a trial or taste-test of the constantly changing recipe for the country. If something angered citizens or drew criticism, the president went back to his office, his kitchen, and was ready to make more changes. The compromise of 1877 let republican Rutherford Hayes become president but the government needed to pull their troops out of the south which let southerners regain power in their states. For instance, southern states reversed all of their laws about education, and called it an “unneeded luxury.” By the 1880s, only half of all African American children in the south were educated. (history alive, 320) Not only did the south take away education for freedmen, the grandfather clause stated that you were excused from taking a literacy test if your grandfather couldn’t vote on January 1, 1867. Since no African American men could vote on January 1, 1867, all blacks were forced to take literacy tests which was already rigged against freedmen. Two American Presidents, both very influential in their time and both having had a great impact on history are Ronald Reagan and Woodrow Wilson. Both Presidents were advocates of peace even though they would not have hesitated to enter into a war if war was needed to insure the safety of the United States and Democracy as a whole. By use of small wars and political pressures both Reagan and Wilson, with the exception of Wilsons entering into WW-I, used diplomacy and these small conflicts to do what they thought was best and righteous to defend freedom and Democracy. But were they truly righteous individuals or did they just have their own ideas and agendas of what was best?
Two great men, two great presidents, led our nations to excellency and great success. Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were hard working, intelligent men who were very familiar, but were also different in many aspects. Through their dedication to our country and their passion of politics they have made our country better.
(Document H) Although some may argue that in the beginning, women were treated unfairly, this was true, however, this just had a rough start, and by the 1920s, Wilson passed the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote. Aside from the women in the United States, the African Americans were in an uproar as well. Stated in The Crisis by W.E.B DuBois, " black men were drafted into a great struggle." (Document I) Although DuBois argues that Wilson drafted many black men to fight against Germany, he did this to protect the United States on a national level. President Wilson was a sympathizer with the south, a fine speaker, a sincere and morally appealing politician, and an extremely intelligent man. Although some may argue that Woodrow Wilson was racist, in the end, he indirectly helped all workers, without discriminating against anyone. He passed many acts that helped the common man, such as the Federal Farm Act, Adamson Act, and the Workingmen's Compensation Act.

Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt were two of America’s great presidents. This is why I feel that both men were equally important in what they did and said they would do. Both in their own ways have added a little of what makes this country what it is today. Both had their own beliefs of how reform, empowerment of the people and foreign policy should be accomplished. As president, the main goal was to do what they felt best for the American people. In doing so, how different could they really be?

During the Progressive Era from 1890-1920, America saw three new presidents: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Woodrow Wilson. This period of time is known as the Progressive Era due to the political and social changes made to move away from a laissez-faire government to a more active government by the administrations of these presidents. Prior to this period, Americans had to suffer through poor working conditions, low wages, social and class inequality and become victims to large corporations that took advantage of the people. In particular, the administrations of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson established the key principles and ideas of economic reform and social reform, which would end up returning the power from the manipulative corporations back to the government, establishing a model for a more active role for the federal government, and improve the lives of Americans. Woodrow Wilson was the first Southerner to be elected president after the Civil War. Born on December 28, 1856 in Staunton, Va., he was the son of a Presbyterian minister who supported the Confederates. Wilson assumed the presidency after a whirlwind career as a college professor, university president and New Jersey governor. However, Wilson left the Oval Office just as heartbroken as the Confederate soldiers that returned home when he was a boy.
