Michelle LeBaron defined culture as “exist within larger systems.” [1] The U.S. and Liberia are vastly different cultures; however, given their historical background one would reason they would have more similarities. While each culture has its proverbs, (passed down from generation to generation) the major difference between these cultures is clock time and event time.
The United States is a clock timed culture. Consequently, clock timed cultures consider time “as a dotted line with regular spacings. Events are organized by the number of intervals before or after their occurrence” [2] as stated by Dr. Livermore. For example, the United States custom is to form organized lines in public places such as marketplaces. As an Illustration,
Whenever traveling to different countries they notice every culture is different from their own. Every country has different cultures but many times there can be similarities, For example, if you travel to both Honduras and Dominican Republic you notice a lot of differences from the way they dress to the food they eat. They both have great cultures and they are different cultures but they can be similar at times. Firstly, the food they eat are similar foods like both of their dishes consist of beans, rice
Evaluate the extent to which the American colonies had developed a society different from that of the mother country by 1763.
African-Americans have created a unique cultural tradition from African and European influences in Louisiana. However, religion to medical care also language. African-rooted traditions were transformed in Louisiana to form a vibrant ethnic culture. With them, African slaves brought their cultural identities languages, religions, oral traditions, and became evident in Louisiana. Perhaps the most flamboyant of these, continuities are seen in religion, particularly Voodoo.
Many of our life lessons were often given by our elders in the form of stories, jokes, and the spirituals which serve often song in the fields, as well as, on Sunday mornings. Yet, as a people, we thought it necessary to hold on these priceless teachings because it has served as the only link to our African ancestry. African American culture is both part of and distinct from American culture. African Americans have contributed literature, agricultural skills, foods, clothing, dance, and language to American culture.
In summary, the Benin culture and the USA culture is different in various ways. This is what makes each culture unique and memorable. I think there are things that both cultures could learn from each other. For example, the Benin culture could learn to embrace technology and let go of some of its traditions, especially those that are outdated. The USA culture could become less individualistic and more group oriented. It will foster more interpersonal relationships and community
Culture can be seen from the interaction of many things such as history, activities and developments. It is also represented in the form of people live. Living in two different countries is a unique experience that gives you a new way of thinking. In my case I have lived in Colombia and now in the United States. Despite bearing some minor similarities, the differences between this to countries are notable in geography, festivities, economic and food.
Culture, as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary is stated as “The integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief and behavior that dpends upon the capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations. The customary beliefs, social forms and material traits of a racial, religious or social group. The set shared attitudes, values, goals and practices that characterizes an institution or organization. The set of values, conventions or social practices associated with a particular field, activity or societal characteristic.” Of these four definitions, I shall be focusing on the second one to discuss what makes up the culture of American Indians. The culture of the various tribes that made up the Native Americans is one of close knit families, highlyspiritual peoples and living together as one with the land they lived on. They believed in spirits, worshiping and honoring them. Some settled into single locations while others were nomadic, but all had a focus on working with the land around them. Because there are so many varying tribes that make up Native
All countries are defined by their specific religions, cultures and traditions. African culture is just one of those disposed with traditions, spirituality and music. Unfortunately, as Africans were taken from their homes to be sold in America as slaves, they were separated from the cultures that they understood and that were theirs. The Africans in America had to find ways to fit their culture into their new environment. In order to acclimate to their new country, African slaves from different countries and cultures in Africa combined their unique traditions with the Christian ideology of their masters to create their own new form of existence. Slaves were able to form their own culture with unique food, religion, and ceremonies. Slave culture was developed from Christian ideas, African traditions and devoutness, as well as the distinctive mentality that arose from slave experiences.
The lifestyle of African Americans reflects the influence of cultural traditions that originated in Africa but at the same time reflects the uniqueness of the African-American in the United States ("Black American").
The Africans use what is called a phenomenal calendar, rather than a calendar that is based on traditional time. Time is established by using events rather than time itself. A day is also constructed this way. Time is not known, it is perceived. Nine o’clock is not nine o’clock; rather nine o’clock is when the cattle are milked. Time is referred to as the event in which is taking place during that part of the day.
Culture has a paramount influence in everyday day life from the way people dress to way people gather food to how someone greets others. It united group of people based on their share ideas, perceptions, and knowledge (Blanco). Although some cultures share similar aspect, some can vary differently in their customs and norms. An example would a clan known as Nacirema whose culture would be described by outsiders as extreme and sadistic. Their culture consists of unique ritual, strong believe in magical essences, but how different does it vary from the American Culture?
Every day that there was a link with Nigeria or I chatted with my partner about the main topics of life I always learned something new. It ranged from college life to religion, without overstepping any boundaries. The eagerness to learn about another country and their views on life was just as exciting for me as it was my partners. Although there are many differences between Nigeria and America, there is also much in common that I would have never expected. I enjoyed all the conversations that I encountered with the Nigerians who also share a love for their own culture.
For many years, African-American culture developed separately from Westernized culture, both because of slavery and the persistence of racial discrimination in America. As a result, African-American slave descendants desired to create and maintain traditions of their own. Today, African-American culture has become a staple facet of American culture while still maintaining its individuality. African Americans who remained in the South have carved out their own path that continuously influences the socioeconomic and
As you can see, definitions of culture vary according to the focus of interest, the unit of analysis and the disciplinary approach (psychology, anthropology, sociology, geography etc.)
Culture can be defined as the way of the life of a people, with regards to both the material and non-material aspects. However, as a result of a developing and maturing society, in addition to the birth of various generations and external influences, these “ways of life” can be inadvertently retained, renewed and even discarded. Our own Caribbean society, specifically Barbados is not exempt from such occurrences.
