Trois Couleurs Rouge is centered around relationships, fate, and coincidences. Valentine talks to her boyfriend on the phone all the time, but their conversations are rather strained and not as loving as one would expect between a couple. The uncomfortable relationship is emphasized when Valentine meets Joseph. It seems that Valentine has deeper conversations with Joseph, who lives a secluded life. Despite the differences between them, the two are able to bond throughout the film. Fate plays a hand in their bonding because if it were not for Valentine hitting Joseph’s dog, they possibly would not have met each other. Also, Valentine and Auguste always seem to be in the same area, but they never cross paths until the cruise accident at the …show more content…
On one hand, there is Valentine who seems to be caring and compassionate. After hitting the poor dog, she is willing to take it to the vet and find its owner. On the other hand, Joseph is bitter and apathetic towards almost everything. Valentine brings his dog to him and explains what happened, Joseph does not even care. His insensitivity is further emphasized when Valentine questions if he would still act this way if she ran over his daughter. His only response was that he does not have one, and then proceeded to kick her out. They meet again later and discuss some things. Valentine believes that people are not bad. However, Joseph does not seem to agree. He asserts that people do things to help alleviate the guilt. Therefore, bringing back the dog really is not an act of kindness, but rather something she did so she would not feel guilty afterwards. Another distinction between the two characters is how they approached Joseph’s stalker-ish eavesdropping ways. Joseph seems to have no remorse about it, while Valentine is appalled. Yet, when she tries to confront the cheating husband about the situation, she just could not muster up the strength to do so. Valentine noticed that the man had a family, and she did not want to ruin that for
He appreciated everything Jack’s family had done for him, especially Jack himself. Despite struggles throughout his journey, for example, “That’s why it felt like a nightmare when Joseph, maybe three steps away from the bank, fell through the ice of the Alliance River.” (GS38) As Joseph did go through these problems every once in a while, Jack had some what changed Joseph. During a fight broke out in the gym locker room, Joseph was being ganged up on.
Later after the battle has started we still see him hold on to his morals as much as he can. Even though he has to fight and kill the British, he still shows his strength in his morals in the battlefield. “God’s name, what are you to rob the dead with the fight going on! Cousin Simmons roared.” (Fast #147) We see just high of morals that Joseph has, and just how much he holds to
As a child, Joseph hears many rumours and stories about Tom’s potential “deformity and madness” however “whatever the truth might have been, it was soon lost like a delicate flower in a tangle of noxious weeds”. This shows how no one really knew the truth about Tom Leyton, as it had long been lost in a sea of rumours, meaning that whatever Joseph first heard about Tom was probably either flawed in reason or wildly exaggerated. As Joseph became closer with Tom Leyton, Joseph discovered that Tom was a “tender carer of silkworms”, “reader of poems” and “shy gift-giver”. This demonstrates that Joseph has been able to move past his initial perception of Tom and find out more about the real man. When Tom opened up to Joseph about his time in Vietnam and in hospital “the painful revelations” of his past were like “a wound that needed time to heal before life could move forward again.” This shows that even though it is very hard and even painful for Tom to talk about these things, it was very important as it allowed Joseph to fully understand Tom’s Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and experiences in Vietnam. Joseph’s final portrait of Tom depicts a “gentle smiling face” “with eyes that shone with the wonder of someone who had just witnessed a miracle.” This clearly outlines how Joseph’s initial perception of Tom was changed when he learnt about the true Tom Leyton and his final portrait of Tom demonstrates this clearly. Despite the vicious rumours that clouded the truth about Tom Leyton, Joseph was able to uncover what the real Tom Leyton was like which clearly demonstrates that what we hear about someone, in no way reflects all there is to know about
Jacob’s preferential treatment towards Joseph was destructive, and created dissension among Joseph’s brothers (fueled sibling rivalry –
Joseph learns from his father, Elias’ faults in both his community leadership and personal life. Joseph is a more powerful leader as well as a family member because of this. At the beginning of the novel, Elias is introduced as the former leader of Waknuk the community they live in. He teaches and inspires Joseph to lead the community, but he is also a good example for Joseph to learn how to alter his leadership styles to be more effective. At the beginning of the novel, there is a jump back in time to explain Joseph's childhood:
On the other hand, at first Joseph, who was new to basement living often, spent his days quietly pacing. Anna noticed that at times he appeared to have silent remorseful secrets in his eyes and a tortured soul. But as time passed, he too accepted his fate and began amusing himself by talking. He would talk about anything and everything, including the occasional whiff of Miss Margot's perfume which Joseph said, "reminds me of a day when I had walked into my house and found that it was warm and cozy and smelt like sweet vanilla and pine
Joseph hears the sibling’s argument and becomes very angry. “‘Not ashamed!’ Repeated my father. ‘Not ashamed of producing a mockery of your Maker- not afraid of trying to tempt your sister into criminal
Just this sentence shows how much Joseph has developed and matured as a person throughout the novel. It asserts that even if Tom were to act as if he didn’t exist and hide in his room all day Joseph would still want him to come out, because he believes that he is a wonderful person who is wasted hiding away like that.
His emotions portray how much he loves Abrussi as he is constantly talking about it. “The ski patrol has permission to slit your throat” because Vanno keeps on talking about Abrussi. So instead of Vanno telling the stories to the ski patrol, he tells them to Red Dog. This shows how Red Dog is different, and is a “special doggy” and has “a gift”. This is where Vanno really gets to know Red Dog and they become great mates. This is a good decision because he gets to tell his stories about “great, big, beautiful nuts” and he also doesn’t get his throat slit. Some people try to act what they’re not and over exploit their feelings for someone or something
He was born to an abusive, alcoholic father, who beat him and his mother on a daily basis. Joseph excelled in academics, gaining high grades, and reputations among his classmates, although when he grew older, he lost interest in his studies, and his grades plummeted. After he

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 20% of Canadians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime. Mental illness is a serious issue within society which can hinder the lives of all who are affected by it. Insanity (or “madness” as it is called in Hamlet), is defined by google as a state of frenzied or chaotic activity. Madness is something which can be exploited by those who appear to suffer from it. The exploiting of insanity stems primarily from the criminal justice system, where a plea of insanity could potentially get a murderer a sentence of some time in the mental hospital instead of a life in prison.

Drugs are a major influential force in our country today. The problem has gotten so out of hand that many options are being considered to control it or solve it. One of the most controversial issues facing our generation is if we should legalize marijuana. Usually, people do not know a great deal about marijuana they just considered it as any other drug. There is one thing people should know is that marijuana is not like the others drugs such as heroine or cocaine. But, marijuana is considered a drug, and in fact is illegal, due to number of reasons. For me, and so the various people who agree, marijuana is exceedingly comparable with other substances that are legal, mainly alcohol and tobacco, in
One of the inherent conflicts in the story of Joseph is the tension between Joseph and his brothers. The tension between them is caused by both Jacob and Joseph. First, Jacob shows favoritism toward Joseph, because he is the son of his favorite wife Rachel. Second, Joseph brings back bad reports when he is out pasturing with his brothers. However, what truly increased the hatred and jealousy was the Joseph’s dreams. The author notes that when Joseph recounts the dreams, “they hated him even more (Gen. 37:8).” Their jealousy for Joseph is strong enough that they are willing to murder him. However, they decide to instead sell him into slavery, and convince Jacob that he was killed.
