As you read or view the movies of these two novels, Perfume, and Frankenstein, you will be able to see how that the two types of murders are the same but different. You would think that a person who kills would have some motivations about it, or a method of why they do the killings, but something they do not. We can start by looking closely at the novels Perfume, The Story of a Murderer, by Patrick Suskind and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. As you start to read each novel, you can tell that each author had taken the time to put together an outstanding novel. Let’s look at both main characters, in Perfume, you have a child born with the stunning sense of smell and had murdered women in the quest for the best scents that the world has ever smelt. He starts to murder, fundamentally, to coerce his maker to make him some individual to satisfy this need. The monster obtains nothing about the world that he has been brought into. The monster was left for dead and not wanted, however learns many things including language and survival instincts, additionally, he learns he needs to have a place. He needs to love and be loved, and he needs to be wanted. He has neither of these things, and regardless of how hard he tries, he can't accomplish them. Upon this acknowledgment, the monster requests with his creator to make somebody who can satisfy this emptiness, “If I have no ties and no affections, hatred and vice must be my portion; the love of another will destroy the cause of my crimes, and I shall become a thing of whose existence everyone will become ignorant” (Shelley, 2003, p. 150). Victor, the man who made the monster and left him for dead, declines to make him a partner. Both Frankenstein by Marry Shelly and Splice directed by Vincenzo Natali have a common theme between them, both of their horror develops a result of neglectful parenthood. This occurs when the Creators abandon their creations, show abusive tendencies and treat them as a lesser creature. In Splice, the scientists treat their creation as if they were a pet or an experiment. They do not regard their emotions, which leads to Dren ends up raping Elsa. While similarly Frankenstein Victor neglects his Monster, he illustrates his unwillingness to create a companion for The Monster which results in The Monster going on and murdering his family. Specific instances from the stories include the moments in Splice when Elsa and Clive Move Dren around in a box and when Elsa cuts off Drens stinger. In Frankenstein, the first moments of The Monster’s life when Frankenstein cannot look at The Monster out of disgust and when Frankenstein rips apart The Monster’s mate. These actions all display poor parenthood which inevitably lead to the horror.
The reader can immediately see this because the Monster says, “I am malicious because I am miserable. Am I not shunned and hated by all mankind?” (Shelley 124). He begins to murder members of Victor’s close friends and family. His first victim is William Frankenstein. The Monster has no intentions to kill William, but he says, “Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live? Why, in that instant, did I not extinguish the spark of existence which you had so wantonly bestowed” (Shelley 116). The Monster shows his frustration with Victor creating him in this way and for making him into an outcast. After Victor breaks his promise of creating a female monster, the Monster murders Henry Clerval. The Monster’s anger continues to build up over time and he believes the only way to face it is by taking the lives of those who have a close relationship with Victor. The Monster kills Elizabeth Lavenza on her wedding night. He takes the lives of the people who are in a close relationship with Victor due to the anger he feels toward him. The violence the Monster uses is his way to try and seek revenge on Victor because he feels that he set him up to fail, to be an outcast, and to be unacceptable to
Frankenstein’s and society’s rejection of the monster, however, drove him to an uneven passionate pursuit for a companion. He forced Frankenstein to create a female monster, and he provided motivation by killing Frankenstein’s loved ones and threatening to kill more of them. The monster recalls in this final scene of Shelley’s novel how his desire drove him to evil. “. . . do you think that I was then dead to agony and remorse?--He . . . suffered not more in the consummation of the deed;--oh! Not the ten-thousandth portion of the anguish that was mine during the lingering detail of its execution. A frightful selfishness hurried me on. . . .” (153) At that point in the novel, the monster has changed from good in nature to evil in nature. His own desires are more important to him than the well-being of others and he is willing to commit murder in order ensure the fulfillment of his desire.
The monster tried to make friends and meet people but as soon as he would try and talk to someone they would run away and be scared of him. One of the main reasons that the monster caused terror is that he was misunderstood by people. He was actually a kind monster but nobody would get past his looks (He actually conducted himself nicely). They decided based on his appearance that he was murderous and intimidating. For example, in the novel, the monster was talking to the blind man then, “ The cottage door was opened, and Felix, Safie, and Agatha entered. Who can describe their horror and consternation on beholding me? Agatha fainted, and Safie, unable to attend to her friend, rushed out of the cottage. Felix darted forward, and with supernatural force tore me from his father, to whose knees I clung, in a transport of fury, he dashed me to the ground and struck me violently with a stick” (Shelley 161). The blind old man could not tell that the monster was ugly and intimidating so he had no problem with him, the other cottagers saw him and they immediately got scared of him and beat him with a stick. He spent his life alone, with nobody to talk to and he became envious of other people. That is why he killed people, not because he is mean, but because he had no way to control his anger
Not only is he left alone but he also must learn and adapt to the cruelty of the human world. The monster is left to figure out what feelings are, what fire is, what hunger is, etc. He approaches humans and they fully reject him in horror. They throw rocks and fire and he is forced to be alone, scavenging nuts and berries and hiding in the woods, only traveling when he cannot be seen. Every experience he has had with human beings has been awful and incredibly discouraging. As time progresses he stumbles across a cottage in the woods and he begins to watch a family of three: father, son, and sister (and eventually another woman). It is here that the creature learns what goodness is, what love and family is. He learns to speak English and he reads many novels such as Milton’s Paradise Lost to gain knowledge about his world, a similarity he has with his creator . But he also hears hears stories of the horrible things humans can do and he does not quite understand why or how at this point. From here he develops the feeling of loneliness and just wants to be a part of a family. “The more I saw of them the greater my desire to claim their protection and kindness; my heart yearned to be known and loved by these amiable creatures…” (Shelley 145). He wants someone to love and care for, he wishes for that love and care in return. He does not want to be cold in the woods rejected by any who sees
Deep, gut-wrenching horror and passionate, gripping love: these are what the novels Frankenstein and Pride and Prejudice, respectively, are chiefly remembered for. The differences in their plotlines are striking. While Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein’s creation of a monster and the havoc that the monster wreaks, Pride and Prejudice recounts the charming and colorful love story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. However, despite the obvious differences in the novels’ subjects, the authors of both works share a similar purpose. Both Shelley’s Frankenstein and Austen’s Pride and Prejudice depict the dangerous results of hubris with the purpose of warning society to keep one’s pride in check, lest devastating consequences ensue.
After being abandoned by Dr. Frankenstein, Creature wanted to be accepted by mankind. However, his grotesque appearance was enough for society to isolate him. The physical and psychological characteristics that a society finds difficult to acknowledge as “normal” is what monsters embody. Because people made snap judgements about who Creature was, Creature started thinking of himself as wicked and evil. The circumstances he was placed in incited fury within that turned into physical violence. Creature referred to Dr. Frankenstein as a “cursed creator”, and “For the first time the feelings of revenge and hatred filled [his] bosom, and [he] did not strive to control them; but allowing [himself] to be borne away by the stream, [he] bent [his] mind towards injury and death” (Shelly 138 and 140). He became a powerful and threatening force. Creature fed the evil wolf and became more of a monster than just his physical semblance showed. By murdering innocent victims, he only fueled the monstrosity within him causing it to be his paramount
After seeing the kindness shown by the family, the monster starts to show signs of kindness himself. He previously would steal part of their food storage to eat at night, but upon realizing that it was hurting the family, he stopped. Also, when he learned that gathering wood took up a large portion of their days, he would take their tools and bring back enough wood in one night to last them for a few days. From then on, the monster sought love. When he approaches Frankenstein he does not punish him for abandoning him, but instead implores him to make him a mate so that he can live in happiness. When the monster returns, he learns of the family’s sudden plans to move away. With no other direction, the monster seeks out answers from his creator. He comes across Victor’s papers, which reveal his identity and residence. With his newfound information, the monster decides to find his way to Victor. Throughout his journey his curiosity begins to turn into hatred and rage towards his creator. As he treks across the continent he discloses, “the spirit of revenge is enkindled in my heart” (119). This shows the monster’s capability of harboring dark emotions; it shows his benevolence quickly slipping away.
“I can hardly describe to you the effect of these books. They produced in me an infinity of new images and feelings…” (Shelley 54). As he reads the books he found, he begins to compare his life and himself with others, and shapes his opinion and point of view of himself, since now he wants to be accepted for who he really is, because he knows that mankind rejects him. He feels lonely and miserable, and what he most want in life is a female companion. “You must create a female for me with whom I can live in the interchange of those sympathies necessary for my being” (Shelley 63). The monster feels that he is miserable because mankind hate him, and that is what make him malicious. It is possible that the monster would actually fulfill his promise and leave humankind in peace. We can assume that he has the potential for good as well as evil. As he is being aware of life by reading “Paradise Lost,” he compares himself to Adam, because he was left alone on earth by his creator, and also to Satan, because humans are afraid of him, and he is threatening and
Out of resentment Frankenstein aims to harm his creator, Viktor Frankenstein, by murdering those close to him. Frankenstein’s monster would strive to murder innocent people closest to Frankenstein as revenge for abandoning him and for his grotesque appearance. His lust for revenge is further exploited when Frankenstein breaks his promise of creating the monster a partner, therefore the monster retaliates in vengeance by murdering Elizabeth “leaving a murderous mark of his grasp on her neck” (Shelley, 242). The monster’s murderous intent is fueled by his lust for revenge against his creator. Blaming Frankenstein for all of his misfortunes, such as his horrific appearance and not relieving him of his solitude by not granting him a partner. Revenge forged Frankenstein’s monster from a compassionate giant to a vengeful monster. Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster share the same attribute that all monsters possess which is murdering innocent human beings.
The monster was abandoned by Frankenstein. Eventually, he learns that he was a science experiment when he learns to read and finds Frankenstein’s journal. Slowly stripped from all that he wanted, he began to become vengeful, and ultimately evil. Many humans have run into this situation before, but the monster had nothing to hold onto except watching a family he would never be able to be a part of. When he was denied by the family he lost everything. The monster was thrown into an abyss with nothing to grab onto. When everything is taken from him, he is left with just a hatred for Frankenstein. Frankenstein created the monster just to leave him and the monster will never forgive him for this. He was born innocent and placed in a life of
Even after being rejected, the monster gave Victor another chance. The monster asked him to create a partner for it. But Victor denied the monster’s request. He thought that if he creates another monster, both of them together would only increase his problems. He wondered “Perhaps the two monsters would hate each other… and would kill. And murder, and destroy… without end.” (Page 37) So he cut the body of the female monster he made. This made the monster furious and more violent. Monsters are not born, but created. In order to become a monster one must have been previously victimized or have a predisposition to violence. The monster is created because he is exposed to violence and rejection, he then breakdowns and becomes malicious. In the lines “Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turned from me in disgust? (Frankenstein, 124)”. Shelley is showing that by turning against the creature, Victor is deserting him in a strange and uncomfortable world. The creature is miserable and all alone. In corollary, the creature hurts others, because he has been neglected and in turn a monster is created. The creature states that “I will revenge my injuries; if I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear, and chiefly towards you my archenemy, because my creator, do I swear inextinguishable hatred (Frankenstein, 138)”. The monster believed that Victor would accept him, but after he realized that not only did Victor not want to assume his position in the monster’s life, but society also rejected him, it became a transitory thought, and instead became replaced with his bloodthirst towards Victor and his loved ones, which he knew would hurt way worse than just killing him; making him lonely like himself. Both Victor and the monster partook in horrid acts, in which held horrendous actions; the main one being Victor creating the monster in the first place which in result caused the both of them heartbreak, loneliness, and pain. If Victor wouldn’t have created the monster, then his life would not be filled with so much grief and emptiness; Victor is the true monster, although they are both the primal protagonists as much as they are the antagonists because of the display of the emotions they both portray as lamenting humans/monsters, and the power they give to nature in order to destroy one another.
