From the moment of its creation, protein powder has been engulfed in a tornado of controversy. Doctors, scientists, and athletes have debated on whether or not it should be used for years. Protein provides the building blocks for all cells and membranes, hormones and various growth factors. Elena Voropay, a writer for Iron Man Magazine, says “Protein is found literally everywhere in your system: there is protein in your muscle tissues, your heart, in the enzymes that digest your food, in your skin cells and even within your blood” (Voropay 1).

The best-selling protein shakes are all based on milk proteins. Protein in its powdered form is also much lighter than a full meal. This comes into play when the protein shake is taken as a pre-workout. In that case, it is much better to eat a lighter shake before a HIT or high intensity training regimen, otherwise the contents of your meal may end up on the gym floor instead of being absorbed for nutrients.
It is important to choose a good, healthy protein powder because many companies aren’t honest with their product labels since their products aren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Some negatives when looking at powdered Protein products are that first and foremost, they lack the supplemental nutrients that whole foods have to offer.
