Introduction:
Major depressive disorder is characterized by a myriad of symptoms that interferes with a person's daily activities including ability to work, sleep, study, eat, and enjoy once-pleasurable activities. Major depression is a debilitating disease and prevents a person from being functional socially and professionally.
Major depressive disorder is known to have significant potential morbidity and mortality, and contributes to suicide, incidences and adverse outcomes of medical illness, disruption in interpersonal relationships, substance abuse, and loss of work time. With appropriate treatment, most of the patients with major depressive disorder can achieve a significant improvement in symptoms.

Epidemiology

• 30-44 years are mostly likely age for depression. While major depressive disorder can develop at any age, the median age at onset is 32.
• Major depressive disorder is more prevalent in women than in men. Women are 70 % more likely to develop MDD than men

• Major Depressive Disorder is one of the leading causes of disability in the U.S. for ages 15-44.
• According to data provided by National institute of mental health, Major depressive disorder affects approximately 14.8 million American adults, or about 6.7 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year (12-month prevalence) of which 30.4 % (i.e. 2% of Adult population in U.S. ) is classified severe.
