According to recent research, homelessness affects between 150,000 and 300,000 Canadians a year (Cherner et al. 2017, 219; Gandermann et al. 2014, 341; Piat et al. 2015, 2367). This increase in homelessness began in the 1980’s following economic changes as well as shifts in government policy that lead to a reduction in supports for low-income families as well as a decrease in affordable housing available across Canada (Gaetz 2010, 21; Piat et al. 2015, 2367). Through my past experience with this problem, I was interested to learn more information about the issues surrounding homelessness. Recently, I volunteered at the Vinnies Fitzroy Soup Van and was completely shocked seeing how people can live in situations where food may not be an option that week. Being able to voluntarily help a person suffering was such an amazing and heart-warming feeling. After many visits, I was fortunate enough to hear a story from a young woman named Louise. She had discussed that she ran away from her home after her father had repeatedly assaulted her, which concluded to her being homeless. To hear this personal story it made me realise the many upsetting factors that contribute to people being forced to become homeless.

Therefore, Hawaii Senator John Green proposed to classify homelessness as a medical condition, allowing doctors to prescribe housing as a treatment. Senator Green suggests that Medicaid, a health care insurance program, provides the money for temporary housing. In fact, a study conducted by the University of Hawaii found that after homeless people had housing for six months their health care costs decreased by 43

It is important for communities throughout the United States to develop a system that identifies the number of homeless around them. This information is valuable to many government and private agencies, it enables them to acquire, and maintain needed resources and money in order to best serve their homeless populations. There are different ways that communities attempt to count their homeless population, shelters, feeding centers and others who provide resources are able to take count of how many they serve each day, but unfortunately it can be hard to track those who do not come on a returning basis. The US Census Bureau every 10 years also conducts a Service-Based Enumeration (SEB) to help count the population In the study published by the National

When it comes to sexual abuse and homelessness, people usually have misconceptions and false assumptions about who the person may be. For example, when people think of other homeless people they have the assumption that a homeless must be dirty, living outside in the streets and that they must have stopped working to reach that point. The reality is that a homeless person can look like any regular person, they can look well-groomed, and they do not have to be unemployed or in many cases people may be homeless just because they can’t afford to pay rent. Unfortunately, one of the sad truths about the U.S is that the government does not help as much as they should. “There is enough public rental assistance to help about one out of every four
