Sleeping Beauty

There many different versions of Sleeping Beauty. They can range from the downtrodden original version to Disney’s Sleeping Beauty was based of the story by Grimm Brothers. Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, although seen as a literary/film classic, can actually be seen as a degradation to women with its stereotypical perceptions of women and classic sexist storyline and some racist ideas.
Disney’s movie Sleeping Beauty was created in 1959. The fairy tale tells how a King and Queen had a princess. They had a Christening for the baby, people had come from all over to see the newly born princess. King Huebert brought his son, Prince Philip to meet his future wife. The three good fairies then come to give her three gifts,

The royal couple couldn’t have a child. But then a frog came in the Queen's bath and told her she would have a child within the year. The King and the Queen invited all the fairies to the Christening of the princess and they each brought gifts. The King and Queen forgot one old, evil fairy. They had only placed twelve plates for the good fairies thinking the thirteenth wouldn't come. Except the evil fairy did come. She placed a curse that would cause the girl to stab herself at fifteen with a spindle. One of the fairies had the capability of changing the curse so that after a hundred years a prince would awake her by giving her true loves kiss. The princess was wandering around the castle and saw an old lady with a spinning wheel. She had a sudden urge to try the spinning wheel, she then pricked her finger. The whole kingdom fell asleep with her and giant weeds grew around the castle. Hundreds of princes came, but couldn't get passed the weeds. But there was one prince that came and all of the weeds blossomed into beautiful flowers. When he found the princess, it was love at first sight. He kissed her and she awoke. They lived happily ever after. These two stories are based of the original story that was written in the thirteenth century, where she was sexually assaulted and had two …show more content…
There were over ten different incidents in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty that portrayed these ideas. Aurora's mom was ignored and her sole purpose was to give birth to Aurora. Aurora was shown off to the whole kingdom like an object after she was born to show the kingdom that a new alliance was soon to be made. She was then engaged to Prince Philip as infant for the joining of two kingdoms, she wasn’t given a choice to fall in love with whom she chooses because a woman can’t pick a good husband for herself. The three good fairies brought gifts to Aurora and the first gift is beauty. This idea is sexist because it is showing that the very first thing that a girl needs is beauty. She is taken to be hidden from Maleficent because she can’t protect herself as a woman and needs three women to protect her. Not just one, because it takes three women to be strong enough to care for a child. The three fairies have to take care of Aurora when she needs to be hidden because the women take care of the children. The three fairies aren’t smart. To make a cake, the directions were to fold into eggs, so they took two whole eggs and folded them into the batter. Showing that women aren’t smart enough to do what they are “supposed to do” and they could finally do it once they use
Cinderella by Grimm and its Disney version has the same plot and same main characters. Minor details are changed in the written fairy tale and its popular adaption but these changes can help to judge about the tendencies of the contemporary pop culture.
The story Sun, Moon, and Talia by Giambattista Basile takes place in a medieval country house in the woods. The major characters in this version of Sleeping Beauty are Talia, the King, and the Queen. In the beginning of the story Talia gets put in a country house and gets raped by a King, Talia has twins, upsets the Queen who tries to murder the twins and Talia. The Queen ends up dead and the King, Talia, and their twins live happily ever after. Sleeping Beauty in the Woods by Charles Perrault is very different than the first and is set in a medieval castle. Sleeping Beauty, a Prince, and an Ogress are the main characters and there are also the fairies that gift Sleeping Beauty. The story all starts when Sleeping Beauty is born and an
One of the first versions of Sleeping Beauty was published by Charles Perrault in 1697. However, he based his story on a tale by Giambattista Basile in 1634, called Sun, Moon and Talia. A lord got a beautiful daughter, named Talia. He asked many astrologers and wise men to tell him her fate and after a while they concluded that she would be put in great danger by a splinter of flax. The lord ensured that no flax, hemp or anything of that kind was brought into the house to keep his daughter safe.
Everyone loves a good fairytale, and nothing is quite as magical and heartwarming as a Disney fairytale. The themes of love, comedy, and morality deem them as more than just little kids' stories, but suitable and entertaining tales for the entire family. This is known by a majority of the stories' readers. However, what one may not be so familiar with is the origin of these tales. Where did the stories of Cinderella, Ariel, and Rapunzel come from? The Disney writers certainly did not create them themselves. The differences in the originals will shock anyone familiar with Disney. And what about Snow White? There are differences between the original Brothers Grimm version of the ebony-haired, white-skinned princess and the Disney movie, believe it or not. Some major differences between both versions are the multiple ways the evil queen tries murdering her stepdaughter, the cause of Snow White's revival, as well as how the evil queen died. Why the story was altered is obvious:
Fairy tales have always been focused towards children ever since Walt Disney took over the industry of remaking these stories. He took out all of the gore and some of the violence to make it more acceptable for children. With Anne Sexton's version of Cinderella, she brings back the gore and violence to its full capacity just like with the original Brothers Grimm story. Sexton's poetic version of Cinderella gives a humorous and eye-opened twist to this classic fairy tale. What brings all of these stories together is the way they all socialize women to make them naive. With this in mind, fairy tales do humiliate and objectify women to get them to accept violence within society.
Disney’s animated film, ‘Sleeping Beauty’, centres around the female lead, Aurora, and from the very beginning, a huge emphasis is placed on her physical characteristics and unrealistic body proportions. In a scene at the start of the film, infant Aurora is blessed with magic gifts from each of the three fairies, Flora, Fauna and Merryweather. Each of the fairies bestowed upon Aurora one gift; the first of which, from Flora, was beauty, and the second of which, from Fauna, was the gift of song. Aurora was to have, ‘Sunshine in her hair,’ with, ‘Lips that shame the red, red, rose.’ This strong emphasis on physical traits and beauty reinforces gender ideals in women and carries the negative message that being beautiful is more important than having other traits such as kindness and
Throughout the years there have been many versions of the classic tale, “Cinderella.” From European style all the way to Disney. However, they are all based on the same ancient story. Step mother, step sisters, Cinderella marries the love of her life, you get the idea. Yet, each individual story has its own unique touch to make it stand out just a little bit more than the previous story. The two Cinderella stories that I’m going to be comparing are two Disney films. The first one I am going to discuss was released in early spring of 1950, called “Cinderella”. The second story is a remake called, “Another Cinderella Story” released in 2008. Both films based on the same story line, yet completely different.
We have often seen numerous folktales that appear to be similar among different cultures. Often at times, the characters or locations change to accommodate the surrounding culture, but the message or moral of the story stays the same. In the case of the story, Sleeping Beauty, we notice that the earlier versions of the story are more crude and “adult” and as time passed on, the story evolved to become more suitable for a younger audience. Sleeping Beauty became a story of “rape, adultery, sexual rivalry, and attempted cannibalism” (Hallett, 1) to the clean and innocent Disney version we know today. The three versions of Sleeping Beauty that I will compare are Sole, Luna, E Talia (Sun, Moon, And Talia) by Giambattista Basile, The Sleeping
When comparing the Grimm Brothers story and Disney’s version, they have three major differences. By Disney changing Cinderella from the original Grimm version, they were taking the dark and twisty parts and changing them into a more enjoyable scene. The changes between the two stories are so drastic you might have never thought Disney’s Cinderella was originally based off of Grimm’s written version,
Most people cannot imagine coveted childhood fairytale with pure sadistic characters, blood, death and neglect. Disney motion pictures have depicted their classic fairytales by painting picture of princess with a loving parent, a dead parent, and a wonderful outlook on life with just the hope of dreams coming true. Many people cannot fathom the idea of a beloved fairytale containing the dark acts of rape, torture, and cannibalism. After all, Snow White’s apple was just meant to put her to sleep; and Sleeping Beauty did find her prince right? Wrong. In the original Grimm Fairytales Snow Whites apple was meant to kill her for good and Sleeping Beauty’s prince was
The old version of Snow White contains dark and violent stories and harsh elements that were not proper for kids. However, the Snow White that is familiar today is very friendly and well adapted for children. The original story of Snow White is written by the Grimm Brothers in the 19th century at German. In several of the Grimms’ stories, it contains various odd scenes and violent parts. According to the Disney version of Snow White the queen tells the huntsmen to bring the heart of Snow in order to check whether she is dead or not. However, in the Grimm version of Snow White, the queen, which is the witch, sells a corset to Snow and makes her try on the corset and squeeze her by tightening it. Also, in the original version, it is not the prince’s
The modern Sleeping Beauty known today is from the Brothers Grimm and Perrault’s version. Both of these versions came from Giambattista Basile’s story: Sun, Moon, and Talia is a version of Sleeping beauty (Bettelheim 227). The earliest version of Sleeping beauty is Perceforest.
Walt Disney’s movie was released in 1959 but is still considered a modern version of this fairytale and is watched by many people every year.
Planning is a process of establishing a mission with clear goals as a means to achieve them. Good planning requires special skills and perspectives allowing decision-makers to understand the challenges they are facing and apply the most effective solution to a problem. In order to achieve success, one must plan accordingly. Planning can be short term or long term. Short term plans are done on daily basis and are easier to achieve than long term plans. Long term plans are also known as strategic plans and are used to achieve a long range vision or mission of a company. In both methods of planning, short term and long term, is necessary to achieve top notch results. Like in any other process, there are both benefits and pitfalls to a
When I started analyzing Cinderella I noticed some gender roles/stereotypes that are brought to light. One of them being how women are the ones who stay home and perform household chores. They are “housewives” who depend on a man. The father is briefly in the beginning and afterwards we do not hear of him, initiating that he is off working, or on a business trip while the mom and daughters are home. We also see through Cinderella (who is forced to do all the chores) how their are consequences if she (or women) don’t complete or do the chores that are expected of them (like not being able to go to a ball in Cinderella's case). Another theme that is consistent in Cinderella as it is in other princess stories is the value of being beautiful. We see this when the fairy godmother shows up and makes Cinderella beautiful. She transforms her house clothes into a gown and so forth showing us that beauty is in the way you look or your appearance. If we pursue this theme further we see that the prince falls in love with Cinderella based on how she looks (love at first
