Journal Entry 1 Persephone Staggs (Bree) 1/14/2017 Digital citizenship is interesting to me. We the people (2014) states, “digital citizenship is when people use technology to engage in society, government, and politics.” A few examples of it are reading the news online, following a presidential candidate on twitter and reading their tweets, watching the debates online, or blogging about political candidates. This gives citizens the opportunity to have an active role in their government without physically being involved. Digital citizenship is important because it gives the citizens an access to be involved and still carry on with their daily lives. Kathie Kanavel (2014) states, “Digital citizenship is really important for 21st century skills,
Citizenship will always be a relevant concept because when you are a citizen of a particular country it comes with a sense of belonging. There is a feeling of pride when you become a citizen of a country. In particular, if your family is from that country it can help to gain a sense of community with those around you. It is important for people to feel that they are citizens of the same country as their children. Sometimes legal citizenship changes a person’s perspective and they feel that they belong but often there is still a chance people may be excluded based on external factors, for example, they have a different religion to the majority of a particular community. That’s why it is important for people to be social citizens as well so that they can
People in this world rely on the resource that technology provides in general. This source helps many to connect across the world. It’s provides network system, hardware, software or multimedia. Information technology (Wikipedia). It really benefits bureaucrats by accessing information on the computer about budgeting the money that the government spends each fiscal year. (Milakovich &Gordon, 2014). Technology enhances the government in many different ways. It enhances the government by reducing cost, approve satisfaction to citizen, and increase efficiency for the work process in the government. (Milakovich &Gordon, 2014). Technology allowed government to provide efficient documents online to review. The faster service online is a great way for government to get a positive image instead of
As much as the people criticize the internet there are some importance to it being here today. The internet allows people to stay in contact with others, social media is one of the distractions that the internet provides us with but it does help keep in touch with family members we don’t see every day. It allows us to know what’s happening in the world, for example the news about the chemical bombs that were hit in Syria. The internet provides information to the brain at a faster rate than what a newspaper would do.
Our world gets more digital every day. Nearly everyone has a smartphone and a computer. Even more people have a TV and if people do they are in contact with the digital world everyday.
In the text “The next civil right frontier is digital” by Juan Andrade he states a huge controversy on digital in today's society. Today's generation we noticed that technology is advancing like drastically. As a country we have advance and we still keep on advancing in our technological advantages. Mr.Andrade notice that we just not only use pencil and paper as our key to our success in our education but we also use other technological resources such as a computer. Apparently in his view is seems very mandatory we have this in our education life. He states, “that list includes more than just pencil and notebooks; increasingly, access to a home Internet connection is a prerequisite for academic success.” According to this quote it seem as this
One can appreciate the modern technology and how it simplified life, but fail to use it to the full extent. Throughout these past decades, technology has brought both advantages and disadvantages to the humankind. One of the disadvantages deals with government involvement, giving them the access to information and the power to make sure they have everything under control which leaves its users with limitation and undemocratic. The good news is this situation only leads to certain measure leaving the users with freedom. Freedom giving people a chance to express themselves, even though they fail to see the immunity they own. Democracy tends to be part of the technological system as well, most users use it to ensure democratization is all around the world by including its part of communication. Democratization theory is that Cyberspace provides a various amount of internet sources for people to access, whether it is to communicate or share moments with one another. “Democracy in Cyberspace: What Technology Can and Cannot Do for Us,” is a text written by Ian Bremmer, sharing evidence-based information sources that point out the real deal of internet and it’s reflection towards its users. One’s experience of freedom is determined by the amount that is given to them, including their dependence on one another, as well as, providing the chance to define technologist’s neutrality. Advanced developments have occurred a lot throughout these years for the sake of technology.
Society also uses the internet and TV to keep up with what is happening around the world and to have instant access to information, which is not provided in newspapers as information is a day behind, this is also allows people to plan ahead, e.g. London bombings takes place and citizens get information from internet and avoid public transport. Society also use online banking which saves people from having to go to the bank to pay bills, get bank statements (which only come once a month via paper-based documents) companies now also encourage people to pay bills via electronic methods, by making it cheaper in comparison to cheques and money in hand methods. Society also use the internet for entertainment methods such as ‘iPlayer and 40D’ this allows people to catch up with favourite programs after they have been shown on television, this impacts society greatly as it is free and allows people to make plans during favourite television programs and documentaries. Also many companies do not allow you to apply for jobs via handing in a paper-based Curriculum –Vitae document and completing a job application, companies tell you to apply online, this making it essential to have a computer or access to a computer. Also travel information is now available on
What’s everyone doing now a day? Do you see people walking around reading a book or talking face to face with another human being? Not exactly, now a day you see people walking around with phones in their hands and worrying about what their social media status looks like. Internet has become a very large influence in everyday life, impacting life from health to political beliefs. With the elections coming up in November we see candidates heading to medias to gain publicity, but non of them have used Ron Pauls’ tactic of starting his campaign online and using the Internet to his benefit.
Citizen Sourcing is where the public helps government be more operational and receptive. Government holds accountability, but citizens influence direction and outcomes, improve the government's situational awareness, and facilitate execution of daily government services. For the Government as a Platform, the minimal marginal costs of digital data dissemination and computer-based services allows government to create its knowledge and IT infrastructure accessible to the public that made financial contributions for its development. In the process, the state can help citizens improve their daily productivity, decision-making, and well-being. Government is not responsible for the resulting activity, but can leverage its platform and influence to
It has the capacity to be an excellent vessel for political engagement. There are several examples of this, but there are an overwhelming amount of examples that show the contrary. One example of an internet trend that falls short of politically effective is the phenomenon called “Slacktivism”. Slacktivism (combining the terms “Slacker” and “activism”) involves movements that produce good vibes among politically concerned individuals on the internet. They create petitions and movements that have little to no effect in the real world. Slacktivism can take other expressions, such as wearing political messages in various forms on your body or vehicle, joining Facebook groups, or taking part in short–term boycotts such as Buy Nothing Day or Earth Hour. (Christensen, 2011) This form of political activism is appealing to a lot of people, because it is much easier than real political activism. Initially, the most optimistic scholars expected the Internet to change the functioning of democracy profoundly by increasing mass participation (Barber, 1998). Unfortunately, this did not become the case. Only those whom were brimming with optimism had any hope for the future of political engagement when the Internet got involved. Young people are not necessarily any less interested in politics than previous generations but rather that traditional political activity no longer appears appropriate to address the concerns associated with
The way that we use the internet and our online identities have changed drastically over time. When the internet first started it was a way for people to access email and chat forums, and play online games. Our online presence has evolved to be much more involved and candid.
My definition of digital literacy became a little more complex than before. This is because I learned that with digital literacy one can improve themselves and protect themselves in many ways. Digital literacy helps us learn more about the world around us, but it also helps us become important assets to the community via education. Digital literacy helps us protect our reputation and personal
Over the years the media has made citizens major role players in politics. Ross Perot opened eyes by putting the 1992 Election in the media and thereby allowing voters to become directly involved in politics. The Internet, the new form of mass media “has turned into a major political and media industry” (Grossman 16). Because of the rise the Internet has taken, the idea of direct democracy has risen. The foundation of direct democracy is in self-government. The claim is that the presence of the Internet will increase citizens’ involvement in political issues by allowing them access to more information. This is significant because it takes a look at the impact of technology on society and politics, as well by
One of the biggest social changes throughout our history has been technology. Within recent decades technology has skyrocketed within the United States, and the government has been forced to quickly adapt. While the Internet has been an incredible breakthrough, it comes with several disadvantages. With the rapid development of new, and old, technology the national government has been forced to adjust to the changes by creating laws and regulations to keep citizens as safe as possible. This is a new power that the government has that would have been unimaginable by the
Digital activism is the manifestation of informal communication and media systems can have constructive results on the world giving strength and a voice to people when required. Yet, at the same time be utilized as a part of conflicting attitudes to rather fulfill individual needs of activists bringing on more mischief than good.
