The authors mention that "young people use digital media to connect to information, to entertainment, and to connect with each other" (93). When using media to engage emerging adults, I would think in terms of these three applications of digital media: information, entertainment, and social networks. Of course, churches should use all possible media channels to inform people about their existence, values, and faith practices. Faith communities are supposed to be "googleable" on the Internet. Since I am bi-vocational (work in the IT field), I had an opportunity to be personally involved in designing and building the websites for several faith communities that focus on younger generations. Even though informational media needs to be inclusive,
heir focused target customers spends more time online than with traditional media channels due to the fact the young adults grown up with the online channels. Social Networks, web sites, and media channels are could be the main communication area. Additionally, social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google+, allow them to engage with customers, also using media streaming channels could be an effective advertising method.
“The communication program will target whom, to help them understand, believe, or do what, by informing them of messages, through messengers and channels, to result in objectives” (Cheesebro, T., O’Connor, L., & Rios, F., 2010, Ch. 5). The objective of utilizing the campaign method would reach out the larger population through possibly multiple different media methods, instead of just one or two. When considering using different types of media and which ones to include and exclude when communicating through media, it is important to consider the advantages and disadvantages of traditional, electronic, and social media.
Tanenhaus claims Millennials are using social media to do well. This article states millennial use social media not only to communicate, but somewhat means to bring reasonableness. For example, from the article, “James didn’t develop his new vocabulary of civic obligation and social responsibility overnight” (Tanenhaus). For example, In the article “In common with other millennials, he has made social media, with its many opportunities for “oversharing” self-display, a mean of communication that pushes outward, instead of turning inward”(Tanenhaus). Millennials are the new generation that share and hold the value of communications.
61% of WPA’s churches have fewer than 50 weekly attendees. The WPA’s attendance has declined by 1,449 per year since 2001, while the overall population has declined by 8,819 people per year. Furthermore, it has become harder to attract new members as it now takes 17 attendees to gain one new member. Yet, larger churches are able to mitigate this concern. While Sunday school participation has declined 1% every year, the retention rate of children aging through Christian formation groups has increased. Last, 68% of millennials prefer medium sized churches.
In recent discussions of racism, one issue has been racial and religious profiling. On one hand some argue that these actions are necessary to protect the American people from both foreign and domestic threats. From this perspective, people of color are un-equal to everybody else and people such as Muslims are probably connected to groups such as the Islamic State. On the other hand, racial and religious profiling is considered completely immoral and wrong because it takes away liberties. This leads to a conflict between safety and liberty. My own view is that racial and religious profiling is immoral to an extent; however, I also believe that Americans should be protected. I believe that those targeted by police should match statistics of
Faith-based organizations have been around to assist those in need for a long time and have been able to provide assistance without any federal funding. Many of the faith-based organizations like churches or other organizations that serve those that are in need are only serving their specific denomination. Only serving their specific denomination leaves out so many others that need assistance and allows for the church or other organization to require the individual receiving assistance to have to believe what they believe. With this in mind why give federal funding to faith-based organizations that are pushing their beliefs on those that they are assisting, while at the same time putting a restriction on who can receive the assistance from them. In the video it is stated that if you are interested in converting families in order for them to receive assistance then don’t apply for funding, this is very true if the main purpose
Another challenge concerning the Millennials is that a lot of these young adults are growing up without attending church. The Barna group calls them the unchurched segment and report that this segment has increased in the last 10 years, from 44% to 52% (5 Reasons). This is a problem because it decreases the chances for new members to join the church. The majority of people that follows a specific religion learned about that religion in early childhood. Students of human behavior believe that “The most significant borrowing occurs in early childhood. Family is thus an important factor…” (Wuthnow 106). If the number of the unchurched segment continues to grow at this pace, in the next few decades, this will continue to be a major concern for church leaders across the Americas. It is a lot harder to try to reach those people that have never attended church or don’t come from a religious background than try to reach those that belong to a church or have been brought up in the faith.
For most of the 20th Century, America’s Faith Community enjoyed the luxury of reposeful sanctuary within their Houses of Worship. Such places were considered “off limits” for acts of crime and mayhem by most Americans. Reality often mirrored this anticipation. Even the criminal element looked with great disdain upon those victimizing churches and synagogues. However, immunity to the problems slowly began to deteriorate. The lawless began to view holy and sacred locations as merely wealthy soft targets overseen by the forgiving and the naive. The general respect that was once accustomed from American culture started to erode as well; only exasperating the situation. By 2001, the reality that world level terrorism could also
If I had to write a documentary about something I would choose one about how people and their religions are declining or rising depending on the circumstances. For instance comparing how in one part of the United states christianity is getting larger while in a separate portion it is getting weaker and smaller. I’d also take note of the increase of how many don’t have something that they believe in or what not. The reason that I would like to make a documentary about this is because I’ve noticed how in certain areas of the country or even in just the state of California the amount of churches for certain religions change and fluctuate in terms of how many and how many people you see that are apart of the said religion. I’m interested in seeing whether Christianity should be the religion that the government kind of follows if it isn’t the main religion that is followed in the country.
There is a great disconnection between the Christian community and the mentally ill. The disconnection is shown in the way that the mentally ill is over looked or ignored. In some situations, some people believe the mentally ill have a type of disease that can be transmitted to them by simply being around the mentally ill person too often or being involved in the lives of the mentally ill person on a continual basis. Do people really believe that somehow they can become affected mentally by dealing with or living with people that have mental health issues? Some people feel that all mentally ill people are different and act so different that they don’t want to get the mentally ill person started with their allusions and strange reactions because they are just crazy and there is nothing that can be done by Christians to help them but to pray for them. People do not want to deal with anything that is different from them or deal with something or someone that they do not understand. People do not want to deal with new challenges or things that are different and or things that they do not
After analyzing western goddesses, religions, how they started as well as continued throughout the world, I was able to gain a better understanding on why there are so many varying beliefs today. Through the analyzation of varying religions one is able to see how each religion separates out their values and ideas over how society should function. With multiple religions there are several overlaps of Gods and Goddesses. For example, the Greek's had hundreds of Gods and Goddesses, making them monotheistic, that all branched out and had families, which only created more Gods. Each of these Gods/Goddesses were in power of something different, such as the underworld, water, fire, etc. Other religions only praised one or two major Gods and they
The sharing of cultural information allows groups of people to interact and collaborate successfully. The ways of popular culture, by song, music, instruments, etc. is used to harmonize and come together as a religious entity. This type of culture has been around for centuries, and now through social media, has the power to connect strangers with similar beliefs. It also gives insight into worlds unbeknown to others, information and clarity to certain myths and misunderstandings of religious practices. Of course, too much of something can be harmful. With all types of information comes the responsibility to transcribe and not
My understanding of church is that it is a holy place of worship where people gather to celebrate the life of Jesus Christ through the Eucharist. I love going to church and listening. I even love going to church and just praying. Going to church means a lot to me because I love listening to the good word of Jesus Christ. I go to church a lot with my family. Society and media affects my understanding of church in both a negative and positive way. The positive way society and media affects my understanding of church is when people talk about the goodness and benefits of going to church brings you. Also when people speak the good news of Jesus Christ it makes me want to continue learning
The end of the 16th century and beginning of 17th century witnessed the departures of various European fleets setting out on their journeys westward to explore the New World. From the Pilgrims, who came to America aboard the Mayflower, to the Puritans, who later came across their sacred “city upon a hill,” hundreds of thousands of people eagerly set sail across the Atlantic Ocean on the premise of escaping the King’s tyranny and the unchecked religious persecution in their homeland. The desire for freedom to practice religion created an impression of a land of perfect liberty, where each man has the autonomy to lead his own life without the intervention of the government or other persons. This narrative gives rise to the spirit of liberalism prevalent in American tales, to the extent that individual liberty is often presupposed in conversations about the development of the country. The religious liberty that was sought by the first settlers of the colony, however, does not translate so easily into the vision of individual liberty and the guarantee of basic rights for every person. In this paper, I will discuss the important role that religious freedom played in shaping the early American society. Indeed, I hypothesize that religion provides a better perspective than the commonly perceived ideas of liberalism and republicanism to narrate the history of America from its founding to the beginning of the 20th century.
This book provides a key trait churches must have in order to effectively marketing their church: Passion. The power of social media in essence is its digital word of mouth capabilities.
