The launch of a new digital media gadget does have a huge influence on society and can provoke such great excitement for people worldwide as any sort of media outlet can be used in multiple ways. Most digital media gadgets are everywhere and people will always come across it, especially because technology is improving, advancing, and is everywhere. Certain digital media gadgets over time have shaped the expectations, perceptions and interpretations of reality within society. This is evidently shown through the Apple IPhone. This cellular device over time has provoked great excitement within society as it has seduced and even duped consumers into always having the next new product. Consequently, the question in which the consumers need to ask themselves is do they really need the new IPhone for work use or do they just want it as a form of social status? This essay will firstly refer to the launch of the IPhone and how it provoked great excitement worldwide and then it will examine how consumers are being seduced and/or duped into this product. Reasoning as to how and why this is happening is due to the great advancements and development of technology over a period of time.
People of the 21st century are all desiring and wanting the next big thing, such as the Apple IPhone for example. The day this digital media gadget was launched on January 9th, 2007 had caused a huge upheaval as no one had ever seen anything like it, as it was the first ever touch screen phone. The day
The sensation of the iPhone is obvious in person; everywhere you go, someone has one of these devices in their possession. With millions of units selling every year, it is no wonder that the device is becoming highly ubiquitous and iconic. Like other Apple products, the iPhone is something that is easily recognized all around the world. The same phone has been selling for over four years now with cosmetic and hardware updates for each year’s new iteration, along with an operating system that is becoming more refined. Since its release in 2007, the iPhone has been a massively successful product for Apple, who has sold more than 100 million units in the iPhone's first four year, including 18.6 million in the first quarter of 2011 (Artman). Other competitors make smartphones that are better than the iPhone in many ways, yet Apple is selling more than ever. Other companies release new phones faster than the yearly refresh of Apple’s iPhones, but the latest isn’t always the greatest. It isn’t the technology that makes the iPhone successful, but rather the cool factor that the device expresses (Mintz).
Technology has become a huge part of everyday life, and people seem to have one great debate and are fighting over which is the best phone, iPhone or Android. The Apple iPhone is a cellular smartphone that was created and is maintained by Apple Inc. Android is another type of smartphone that is accessible to consumers, but the operating system is powered by Google and many different companies produce Android devices. The different operating systems and interfaces have created a long and carried out debate to which was superior. iPhone is the better phone and there are many reasons as to why it is superior to its rival, Android. The iPhone’s sleek and beautiful design has users’ hands fondling the device and never putting it down. The
When Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone at the Macworld convention in January of 2007, a tidal change in the way users communicate with one another was unleashed. The phone, which combined the already popular attributes of an iPod with the traditional cell phone, was an instant success, selling millions of units even at the initially haughty price of $599 each (Vogelstein, 2008). The theory behind the creation of the phone was deceptively simple: combine an MP3 player with a Blackberry, camera, and regular cell phone operating on a sleek touch-screen controlled software system. Consumers were finally freed from carrying separate devices to perform all they tasks they now wanted to away from home. In one simple hand-held device they could take pictures, listen to music, play games, communicate with friends and family, and even surf the Internet. This one device changed the way that people began sharing information, allowing them to instantly access information anywhere in the world while also transmitting it just as quickly. The iPhone is now universally recognized and has become a cultural artifact in our times.
“Over the last two decades, our view of mass media communication in modern society has been extensively reconfigured by the “new media” applications stemming from the rollout of digital technologies. In so many different ways, the digital media has come to be seen as the definitive technology of our times. The powerful combination of mechanical calculation, electronics, binary code and human language system touches us in almost every aspect of life” (Athique, 2013). Media in general plays the main role in our lives as a main source of any kind of information. As long as times are changing the ways of learning, reading and sourcing information are changing as well. From the 19th and particularly from the Web 2.0 (starting from the year 2000) the main role of sourcing started occupied by digital media. The term ‘Web 2.0’ came into use after 2004 conference. Web 2.0 suggest second generation of technologies and represent ideas of participation and interactivity, the sharing of data, content, and platforms, encouragement of innovation through such sharing and networking, with software (Gorman and McLean,2009). Examples include blogging, podcasting, forums, wikis and various open source initiatives. At the beginning the main ways of ‘informing’ and learning were only available through publishing media (books, newspapers, journals), later on, radio (1895), (Briggs, 2011), have been added to these sources, then television (1925), (Bellis, 2015), and finally internet
“To date no one’s made a phone that does so much with so little, and despite the numerous foible of the iPhones gesture-based touchscreen interface, the learning curve is surprisingly low. It’s totally clear that with the iPhone, Apple raised the bar not only for the cellphone but for the portable media players and multifunction convergence devices in general (Ritchie).”
In today’s times, the smartphone is important to communicate. Having a smartphone could mean a matter of survival – particularly when traveling abroad, searching for directions, updating reports for work, connecting with friends, family and etc. The product I pick is the iPhone. When the iPhone was launched it rocks the world of every person. The appearances of the iPhone to Americans become a trend in smartphone history. The first smartphone to become a choice set of being sleek and user friendly. The iPhone affects Americans psychologically of having the idea how convenient to surf the internet using a portable device. Therefore, the iPhone became a personal handheld computer device to have easy access to browse the internet. Moreover, consumers
The first article chosen about this event was focusing on the iPhone’s newest features and how it compares to the last release of iPhones. The newest iPhones are faster, have better camera quality, and feature a structure made out of complete glass. What strikes me is that our society has taken this phone and given it such high regards so that we feel we NEED it. In the article, Manjoo quotes “And while experts said Apple’s lead might slip over time, for now, its advantage remains enormous enough to make the iPhone a must for people who think of their phones as their most important computing device — in other words, you and me and everyone we know”. This symbolizes iPhones in our culture as a cultural object, something we have highly regarded, and by definition is something that has a creator, and “has a shared significance; it has been given a meaning shared by members of the culture” (20). We feel as though we cannot live without our phones, making it a part of our daily lives, and leaving Apple with the upper hand on us.
On June 29, 2007, Apple Inc. launched sales of the iPhone at Apple and AT&T stores across the country. Many hours earlier, enthusiastic customers lined up outside stores to get the first iPhone in their hands. The iPhone is more than just a breakthrough mobile-phone device. It is a strategy that may expand Apple's sphere of influence. Apple elegantly combined a mobile phone, mp3 player, and personal digital assistant (PDA) on the same machine characterized by its unique, innovative design.
Our world today is based off of technology and one form of technology in particular seems to control us more than we control it. Cell phones. The iPhone in particular is one of the most popular forms of technology in the world. On June 29, 2007, Apple released the first iPhone ever (Nguyen). The public had mixed feeling on the newest touch screen phone, some thought it was a step towards a greater future in technology and others thought it was too complicated and technology is moving too fast for mankind. Little did we know that the iPhone would become the most popular smartphone in
At first, I was going to analyze and write about smartphones, however I found it more efficient to write also about a particular smartphone to narrow it down from such a broad technological artifact, such as answering who designed it, what for, what their position and the impact they want to have on society was, and their future visions. Therefore, I chose the iPhone as the centerpiece of smartphones I will be analyzing and an emphasis on applications. However, some of this information is relevant and interchangeable to all other smartphones. IPhones and smartphones allow us to access constant information and offer it the way we want it, as it is completely customizable now to fit our learning style. They keep us organized, send information to us in different ways, even shape and offer solutions such as for politics, economies, problems whether individual ones or globally. Smartphones capitalize on shared knowledge and has opened the door to inventors and those who have the knowledge to make our world a more connected place and lives easier by sharing it with us to use. We are able to communicate with other people far off, through space-time compression or shrinking-space to gather news and information.
With Apple being so far ahead of their competition, the only problem one can foresee in Apple’s future is how long they can sustain such innovation before they plateau. Apple does a phenomenal job at releasing their innovative products before their competition, but if their innovation cannot hold steady, this may lead to changes in demand for their products considerably. This can be seen with their release of the iPhone, the first successful touch screen cellular phone. Although people swarmed to the iPhone when it was first released because of its advanced technology, as the years have passed, other similar designs, including those with android and windows based operating systems, have drawn a considerable portion of the market. A clear representation of Apple’s attempt to regain some of this market can be seen when the iPhone was released to Verizon Wireless’ customers in
Apple was the first to integrate a MP3 player into a cell phone. After Apple invented the iPhone, downloading music on ones phone became common. With the unbelievably sharp screen, iPhones took over the gaming market. The phones highly technological A7 chip delivers the type of detailed graphics and multifaceted visual effects that in the past only Mac computers, PCs, and gaming consoles could display (“iPhone” 5). IPhones also introduced the on screen keyboard which were previously unheard of. In addition, Apple launched the touchscreen revolution (Elgan 6).
In the modern world, technology dictates our day-to-day lives. A few decades ago, mobile phones were owned by specific few and mostly used for business. Today mobile phones are used for both personal and business activities (Rintamaoki et. al 2007, p.634). Phones are a sense of direction, communication and a friend to humanity. Apple products have a distinctive nature and a stratified class not owned by many.
With an elegant combination of a mobile phone, iPod and personal digital assistant (PDA), iPhone was launched at Apple and AT&T stores across the US on June 29, 2007(Place, 2007). iPhone is by no means a prodigious success by selling one million iPhones within 3 months (Wolverton, 2007). However, what coupled with its splendid success are numerous criticisms from the general society. This paper
Technology has changed the world in different sectors. One of the fastest growing industries being the phones. The primary purpose why technology introduced phones were to make communication between people more comfortable. And the fact is that since phones got to the market, everything changed in human life because you would pass information anywhere and anytime to others. Being a fast growing sector phones got modified, more digitalized devices known as smartphones got to the market and since its digital world, of course, none wanted to be left analog. Currently, the most significant number of people in the world own smartphones for various reasons some for fun and others for beneficial purposes like using them for learning. It is true that in the next near few years' smartphones will be the most critical device that people own, and the analysis below will illustrate the reason behind this.
