Tupac Shakur was born Lasane Parish Crooks on June 16, 1971 in East Harlem, New York. In 1972 his mother changed his name to Tupac Amaru Shakur after the 18th century Peruvian revolutionary Tupac Amaru Shakur who led indigenous acts under Spanish rule. During Tupac childhood his mother was a Black Panther Party, a United States militant group which was a party to espouse violent revolution against local police. Tupac’s mother was jailed while she was pregnant with him. She was found not guilty and defended herself and won the case.
