Direct advice suggests that the counsellor/therapist is going to tell the client what to do to resolve their problem, giving them the answer directly. It suggests that the person giving the advice understands exactly the client’s problem, understands their world view and is fully qualified to solve the issue. However, helping clients to develop actions suggests that the therapist will stand alongside the client, investigating possible solutions and options. The therapist can then help to empower the client to take these actions forward and develop a future strategy.
