In most of the performance design concept is based on assessment of the performance of building designed by existing code. In those case, the structure is first designed based on the expected seismic load according to existing code, then the performance is evaluated to check the real performance of the structure, and design may repeated, if needed. Those design methods are not truly performance-based seismic design procedure. In a PBSD, the design of a structure should be based on required performance such as displacement, curvature, damage index ,etc.
In Direct Displacement Based Design (DDBD) method, the displacement demand is calculated for specific performance objective and compared to the displacement of static analysis or response history analysis. DDBD was proposed (Humar and Ghorbanie-Asl, 2005) to estimate the design base shear for concrete shear wall systems by using a target roof displacement. Based on the period of the structure, Multi-storey building can be converted into equivalent Single degree of freedom system. According to " Equivalent Principle", for each mode structural lateral elastic displacement could be determine (Cui, Liang and Xin 2009). The structural target lateral displacement for each mode could be estimated and the storey shear is gained by SRSS rule based on acceptable storey drift ratio. Calculation of target displacement and minimum base shear for particular performance objectives are given below: Natural Modes and period of vibration of a

The piezoresistive phenomenon in semiconductors is linked to a change in resistivity of the silicon materials in response to an applied stress and strain .When a stress and strain field are applied, the resistivity is modified and becomes anisotropic

## The Fundamental Concept Of The Finite Element Method

1179 Words | 5 PagesThe fundamental concept of the finite element method is that a physical domain is discretised into a small number of sub-domains, known as elements, over which a continuous field variable such as velocity, stress, pressure, or temperature can be approximated. These elements are connected at specific points known as nodes or nodal points. Since the actual variation of the field variable is not known inside the domain, approximating functions are needed to describe this variation. These approximating

## Ring Shear Test : Development And Fundamentals

1793 Words | 8 Pages2 meters of field displacement to fully develop (A). Methods of Measurement Several devices have been developed to measure the drained residual shear strength. Examples of these devices include, laboratory vane, cone penetrometer, plane strain and independent stress control ‘triaxial’ cells, direct shear box and the ring shear device. The direct shear box and the ring shear device are the two most commonly used because they give more accurate results (E). The direct shear method however has several

## A Small Scale Multi Purpose Finite Element Computer Program

2782 Words | 12 PagesHowever, complexities in geometry, material properties and in the boundary conditions that are seen in the most real world problems usually mean that an exact solution cannot be obtained in a reasonable amount of time. Current product design cycle time shows that the design solution should be obtained in short of time. The solutions thus obtained are approximate solutions. FEM is one such technique to obtain approximate solutions. In FEM, a complex region defining a continuum i.e. a geometric model is

## New Semi Empirical Design Procedures For The Determination Of Ultimate Shaft Friction And Load Displacement Response Of Axially Loaded

2251 Words | 10 PagesKarlsrud(2014) proposed new semi empirical design procedures for the determination of ultimate shaft friction and load-displacement response of axially loaded piles in clay are proposed. A main basis for developing the new procedures was detailed review and reassessment of results from a series of pile load-test programs published over the past 30 years on piles well instrumented to monitor soil and pore pressures as well as load distribution along the pile shafts. Two new alternative procedures

## Ipb Essay

913 Words | 4 Pagescollecting a variety of empirical data. Several IPBs have been created around the world, which are different from each other based on the type of data needed. Accordingly, data collection from IPB divides into two basic categories, internal bicycle data and external bicycle data. The internal data represent the bicycle movement characteristics (e.g. speed, and acceleration), or direct influences on the bicycle (e.g. applied forces, and torques). Likewise, the external data include factors that indirectly

## Design A Safety And Longevity Bridges

10227 Words | 41 PagesIn designing the bridges, an engineer need to completely understand the problem to be solved. To design a safety and longevity bridges, they have to consider different types of loads, how and where they need to apply the load. They also have to undergo several steps that usually need in designing bridges such as understanding the problems, determining the potential loads of bridges, calculating the highest possible loads and calculate the amount of material need to counteract the loads. Retrofit
