Dirt Road Symbolism

Symbolism is an important part of any story. It can inspire emotions that captivate the reader, foreshadow aspects of a story, or introduce you to how a character is portrayed. Nothing summarizes these aspects of symbolism like O’Connor does in the story, “A Good Man is Hard To Find.” Ranging from the dirt road to the big black hearse, they inspire the truth to unfold like words could not do otherwise.
“The dirt road was hilly and there were sudden washes in it and sharp curves on dangerous embankments” (O’Connor). The way the road is described suggests that it is a metaphor for the story itself. It was a big black battered hearse-like automobile” (O’Connor). The black hearse represents death is coming for them. The color black and hearses are usually indicators of funerals. With the car being driven this way, it is implied that the driver may not be there to help them.
“The Misfit sprang back as if a snake had bitten him and shot her three times through the chest” (O’Connor). The number of times the grandmother was shot is symbolic to Christ dying and His resurrection three days later. All her life she was spiritually dead, until she physically died. At the moment of her impending death, the grandmother experienced a spiritual uplifting. Just like Jesus lifted from Earth back to Heaven.
“After the entire family is murdered, a possible significance of the mention of 'five or six graves' becomes clear” ("Flannery O'Connor." Galileo. Web.). The car contained six people: Bailey, his wife, the grandmother, June Star, John Wesley, and the baby. If the baby is buried with her mom, they will only need five gravestones.
