My project is on the adaptive technologies provided to disabled veterans that have lost a limb or have lower extremity injuries. We have seen an increase in the numbers of disabled veterans throughout the past decade in a half due to prolonged wars and military tactic’s used by the enemy. Our soldiers escape the ultimate price only to come back with missing limbs and scars of the hell they faced on foreign soil. Their fight will continue as they muster the energy and patience to conquer their disabilities on the painful road to recovery. The commonality of war in this generation is the social trend that has resulted in these traumatic experiences. There has been lots of headway concerning adaptive technology for the disabled over the years. Prosthetics and Dynamic Exoskeletal Orthosis (IDEO) are only a few of the many technologies offered. …show more content…
I believe if it is used right the information presented can be given in an organized and visually pleasing way. There will be lots of information and acronyms given. PowerPoint allows the viewers to easily digest key points. The pictures used will allow the audience to visualize the information provided. My Presentation will be about the adaptive technologies provided to disabled veterans that have lost a limb or have lower extremity injuries. I will start my presentation off with a brief history of the different prosthetics provided over the years to the soldiers coming back from war. I will then transition to what a prostatic is, the four main types, how it works and the different ways it can be controlled. I will also talk about the future of prosthetics, myoelectric and prosthetic implants. I will continue the presentation with a new technology called Dynamic Exoskeletal Orthosis (IDEO). I will explain what this new form of technology is and how it has given the wounded worrier options when it comes to amputations of the lower
As my fifteen-year-old roommate falls to pieces, panic rises in my chest like a leaping flame. She lets out muffled screams and chilling sobs as she buries her face against the pillow. I kneel beside her and whisper reassurances. “You’ll be okay.” “No one will hurt you.” I pray she hears me but I know she doesn’t. She is trapped somewhere else - somewhere she revisits every day, like a bad song stuck in her head for life.
People often say that freedom is not free and that price has been paid by countless brave individuals. These brave individuals are known as veterans. Veterans should be remembered, respected and honored because of their sacrifices, courage, and patriotism.
When I first started to research about how the American society helps discharged soldiers, I first wanted to know what type of help society offer to them. The article “10 Organizations that Help Veterans Transition to Civilian Life” published by Vista College helped me view a plethora of organizations that offer help to veterans. The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) organization helps “connect veterans to one another and educate them on,” issues and benefits they could get when transitioning
Thank you for serving. I can not tell how glad I am that you served in either the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, or the Coast Guard. From any of the wars, WWI,WWII,The Korean War, Persian Gulf War, The War On Terrorism (Afghanistan), the Iraq War, and the Texas Revolution. Thank you for serving. I cannot say how thankful I am that you made the ultimate sacrifice. I have no idea what you have been through in war. I am so grateful that you fought so we could celebrate veterans day, memorial day and all other holidays that only the U.S celebrates.
The piece of equipment that caught my eye was the Bioness Vector. I saw that it is hard physical work to help the patient walk when they are just starting. But as the time passed and I was observing more patients, they progressed to walk by themselves without the Bioness Vector. The vector was there to catch the patient from falling and there were times that the patient almost could have fallen but the vector caught them, as well the therapist reacted quickly to help redirect the patient. As they tried walking, the therapist was very delicate in assisting the patient by moving each leg into a step. It's a proud moment seeing the patient succeed in being able to walk by themselves. Patients cried and resisted the work because they thought that they couldn't do it. And theres a moment that I remember from a conversation of a therapist and a patient were the patient had a face of annoyance and his therapist asked him, "Im I annoying?" He replied, "Yes!" She responded with, "then you''ll remember me." This just showed me that the therapist will never give up on their patient, that its not just about getting better in the hospital but getting better in things that we do in life. That im sure that this patient when ever he is in the world and he is stuck in a situation, he will remember his
Once reviewing the following policy, I have conducted that this policy wishes to give disabled veterans or their spouses, if they have passed away while on duty, a property tax relief. For a disable veteran to be qualified, the veteran must have been honorably discharged at the end of their military career, while also being determined having become permanently disabled. The Property Tax relief from what I have seen also has no age cap for the veterans or spouses who try to receive the Exclusion, which is good for the people applying so they are unable to be phased out by age. For the spouse to receive the benefit they must either be the spouse of a disabled veteran or the surviving spouse of a veteran who has unfortunately died as a condition of service while in the line of duty. However this is one of my biggest problems with the Property Tax relief, it states that only spouses of deceased emergency personal officer are allowed to qualify for the Exclusion if they have not remarried. I understand this could seem that it is fair, however I do not consider it right to forbid someone to remarry especially after they have lived through the traumatic experience of losing their spouse. In this it appears as if they remarry, they are no longer truly connected to their former spouse, which for some could be farther from the truth. If someone had lost a person who they had loved and marry, I believe it is their right to claim this Exclusion even if they have become remarried. Yes, some
I have a really good friend that is a triple amputee who inspired me to write this paper on The Wounded Warrior Project. His name is SFC (Ret) Barrera. On 7 July 2012, he received his injuries from a reverse improvised explosive device. He is missing his right leg up to his mid-thigh, his left leg right above his knee and his left hand to his mid-forearm.
On the other hand the number, the number of patients with psychiatric disorders is lower for rural veterans then urban, but the rural veterans diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses are sicker than urban veterans (ORH) This is most likely because rural veterans are more unlikely to seek treatment due to pride, this will cause them to be sicker when diagnosed then those who were diagnosed early.
Many veterans are missing major limbs, and are very handicapped making work and everyday life a huge struggle. There are prosthetic legs and arms that can be used, but they often take a long time to learn, and are very costly. In a recent interview with NBC News, a veteran by the name of Mike Kacer explains how the government spent $117,000 providing him with prosthetic arms over the last five years, and he doesn’t even like to use them. "I could actually tie the shoe faster without the prosthesis," Kacer says, and he’s not the only one that feels this way. Many other veterans using these prosthetic limbs eventually abandon them due to painful, unreliable and hard to use reasons. “Of the roughly 1,600 veterans who have suffered major limb losses from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, about 319 have faced amputations of some part of their arms.” (NBC News). Not only is that a lot of money spent on prosthetics that are hard to use, painful, and eventually abandoned, arms rather than legs are a lot harder to use according to research by Gary Berke, a Stanford University instructor who operates a private clinic providing prosthetics. "Walking is relatively straightforward," Berke said. Artificial legs essentially can do everything that real ones do. Artificial arms, however, are not nearly as adept as the real ones. "We're behind the eight ball in terms of
The U.S Department Veteran’s Affairs (VA) provides a wide range of benefits for our service members, veterans and their families. Some of these benefits include but are not limited to include compensation, disability, education, and home loans. Throughout this paper I will discuss these benefits and the eligibility required to receive them. Eligibility for most VA benefits is based on type of discharge received through the military which is normally all discharges under other than dishonorable conditions.
Guaranteeing that veterans, their families can retrieve the full range of benefits available to them fighting for the interest of injured heroes on Capitol Hill instructing the public about the great sacrifices of veterans transitioning to civilian life. Offer free professional assistance to veterans, their families in obtaining benefits, services earned through military service are prepared by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) other agencies of government. Offer outreach concerning its program services to the disabled veterans their families specifically. Signifying the interests of disabled veterans, their families, their widowed spouses, their orphans before Congress, the White House the Judicial Branch, as state local government.
Members of the armed forces sacrifice not only their time, but also their lives serving in extreme stressful situations and remote circumstances in the world. Although these individuals are considered to be one our bravest people in this nation, they are also not immune to the substance use issues that affect the rest of society. U.S. military members are considered to use illicit drug use the least as compared to their civilian counterparts, but the popularity of heavy alcohol and tobacco, prescription drugs, and opioids are increasing in a fast pace. If this is left untreated, then it can often lead to criminal activity and can tragically increase numbers of veterans that are being arrested and entering the criminal justice system.
I don’t think that people without handicaps realize how big of a deal it is to be able to jump into the water and keep yourself afloat. To be able to swim and play with your kids or friends is taken for granted. Obviously, it is not only swimming that is tough for people with handicaps. Swimming is just one more way we can work to bring them some joy again. I really enjoyed this article and thought it was a great choice, because I think it is wonderful that people are constantly working to make people with handicaps lives easier. I have not personally dealt with someone in my family with a disability, with some motor function like their legs, but I had to be on crutches for two weeks when I was in middle school, and it was hell. If I simply hated dealing with crutches for two weeks, I cannot imagine people who have had them for years and years to come. Making life easier and more accessible for these people is a great use of time and money. I love everything about this practice, except the fact the insurance will not cover prosthetics. I believe in a few years once it becomes less expensive and the business grows that insurance companies will finally jump on board. They may seem expensive now but it is almost a brand-new technology. They will always have high startup costs. It is the next step in medical technology and many people suffer from these disabilities, so we must help them every way we can. When people suffer from a disability like this, they simply don’t get enough exercise because it is much more difficult and dangerous. Without giving these people access to this leg is cruel because they will only get in worse shape. I hope that Lasko can swim comfortably with his kids from now on, and now we just need to keep on advancing with this technology. These prosthetics will simply keep on improving being able to do more and more for the user. I have seen a prosthetic arm that can move
Mark O’Brien lived his life from the age of six almost completely immobilized after he contracted polio (Lewin, 2012). The effects of polio on his body not only left him mostly immobilized but also left him reliant on a device called the iron lung. This device helped O’Brien to breath by changing the pressure around his body; something his muscles wouldn’t allow him to do himself. He could only spend a few hours out of the machine, and during these hours he still had to have a respirator on hand. Despite his physical disability he managed to attend and graduate the University of Berkley with a degree in Journalism. He was a well-known writer and poet, and an advocate for people with disabilities. His life inspired several movies, one of which is The Sessions (Lewin, 2012).
If one was to be asked that what exactly is a powered exoskeleton then the image that would generally come to a person’s mind would be Iron man or they would think about the movies like Avatar, Aliens, The Avengers, Edge of tomorrow. The list will go on and on. Earlier people were aware of only a handful of wearable exoskeleton devices. They had a belief that all fictional and nonfictional wearable robotic devices were large, rigid metal armors that were heavy and had sizable actuators. Researchers began to develop powered exoskeletons which were wearable devices that performed useful physical work. Just like that, Exoskeletons became obsolete! So did the term “Powered Exoskeletons”. “Powered Exoskeleton” had been shortened to “Exoskeleton”. There were different names thrown around for this new family of fictional and real devices. Question arises, Is powered exoskeleton an ironman thing or more than that? The answer is a big no, powered exoskeleton is more than a big machine or Iron man suit. This paper will give us a more insight of what it is, how it evolved and where it can be used to benefit us. It is written with the intention of making people aware
