Got milk? Dairy cow milk isn’t as good for the public we had originally thought. By not drinking dairy cow milk we can be healthier by switching to other alternative sources of milk. Dairy cows are being milked all day long showing that animal care should be improved. By reducing our dairy consumption, we would reduce our need for cows which will also save the environment from water usage and greenhouse gas emissions. In most cases, dairy milk has always been the go-to option in our fridges since we were children. Even today, dairy milk is the leading milk product, and it accounts for the majority of milk drank in the United States. However, these days new alternatives have risen such as soy milk or almond milk to name a few. In fact, a Mintel research study done in 2015 found that non-dairy milk purchases in the United States had increased by 9% just that year (Rowland, 2017). This showed a drastic change in consumer habits in America because the American milk market had traditionally been dominated by dairy. To put things in perspective, that same Mintel study found that almost half, 49%, of Americans drink non-dairy milk (US, n.d). This massive increase in recent non-dairy milk consumption reflects a massive increase in accessibility to non-dairy milk products. Just ten years ago access to non-dairy products was far more limited than it is today, and the non-dairy products available were undesirable. Because of advances in food science, there are not only more non-dairy
There has also been a shift in marketing for these harmful products, most of which is funded by the lobbyist for these unhealthy foods. There are pharmaceutical companies and food companies that fund organizations such as the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association and even the American cancer society, this is a complete conflict of interest. (What the Health) These companies are advertising their products, for example Danon on the American Cancer Website, when we know that Dairy has strong links to breast cancer! (What the Health) As a direct result our population has become sick, and unhealthy and disease prone. There has been an exponential increase in diabetes and heart related issues, as well as cancer. My generation in particular has been exposed to this nonsense as children, in the school system. This is still happening today and it is a huge problem. We might be the first generation to not outlive our parents. (What the Health) The historical play in view of food and consumerism in my generation has played a big part in my historical sociological imagination.
For many years now humans have been deceived that cow’s milk will provide many health benefits.
Got Milk? Well, Austin Powers, Tracy McGrady, Serena Williams, Britney Spears, and even Elvis all do. But, do they know what they are selling in this Got Milk? Advertisements? The Got Milk? campaign was based on a milk deprivation strategy that reminded consumers how inconvenient it was to be without milk. The advertisment made milk a very popular drink because of its attractiveness not because of the nutrients and health issues. It has been believed by many that milk is needed to have a strong and healthy body, when actually milk can be extremely harmful and the nutrients needed for a good body can be found in many other sources.
milk as a loss leader, grocery stores can bring in more customers because milk is a necessity
Chocolate milk shouldn’t be banned because it has things children need to grow big and strong. “Flavored milk is far less sugary and tends to have fewer calories and more nutrition than beverages like soda,” said Keith Ayoob associate clinical professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York City. In addition a survey of 58 Elementary and secondary schools across the country that removed chocolate version of moo juice from cafeterias for 2 years and offered only white milk version found a 32 - 64% drop in the amount kids drink depending on the grade, in part because they stop fully draining the carton. These examples explain that chocolate milk has benefits to it and a lot of kids only like chocolate
Over the years, healthy, safe, nutritious, and essential milk has increased as a focus of safer and healthier foods in the public health industry2. Today, health Canada distinguishes that a safer and healthier milk is a major
The other thing that we should consider before using dairy products is from the ethical point of view. Drinking cow’s milk or consuming any dairy product is equal to torturing thousands of cows, due to changing their nature and way of living in order to make them useable for ourselves. It has become evident that milk is not the only source and product that we can reach vitamins, proteins and calcium from, in fact there are many natural and healthy products that we can reach out those factors that we are looking for it in milk, for instance fruits. Contrary to common belief, people should stop consuming milk because it is unhealthy, unnatural and unethical.
It is on the myplate as a needed food item which is endorsed by the U.S. government. (“Choose MyPlate”) Milk is promoted because calcium can reduce the risk of getting osteoporosis. The truth is that calcium from milk is barely absorbed in the bones. The amount of people with osteoporosis in the U.S. rose from 10 million in 2002 to 12 million in 2010 and is expected to be more than 14 million by 2020. (“Facts and Statistics”) In a report done on whether three servings of milk a day was an evidence based recommendation it provides evidence against milk being good and nutritious. This report was done by two medical doctors who each had Phds from the Harvard School of Public Health. They explained how the milk everyday was promoted because of the sugar content in milk that got kids to drink it. They also explained how humans have no nutritional requirement from milk and countries that do not consume milk have a much lower bone fracture rate than countries that do consume milk. They also provide results from a meta-analysis that showed that milk consumption had no benefit for bone protection in adults. A meta-analysis is a combined report of multiple scientific studies. (Ludwig) Green vegetables such as kale provide just as much calcium as milk and this calcium is better absorbed by bones. Three cups of kale provide the same amount of calcium as one cup of cow's milk without the added fat and cholesterol adding in vitamin a and e. Oranges have about the same amount of calcium as kale and oranges have vitamin c which helps the immune system. Given that three cups is a lot one cup of soy milk has the same amount of calcium as cow's milk and only one ounce of sesame seeds have the same amount of calcium as a cup of milk. That is just one spoonful of seeds that also gives iron and omega-3 fatty acids which are both nutritional requirements. cow's milk is clearly very
In 1993, due to the decline in milk consumption, dairy farmers in California came together to form the California Milk Processors Board (CMPB). They agreed to give three cents for each gallon sold to fund an advertising campaign with the main purpose of “reminding people to drink milk” (gotmilk.com). Jeff Manning, the man hired by the CMPB to find an advertising company, appointed an ad agency known today as: Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. The San Francisco based company began immediate consumer research in which they found the majority of people loathed running out of milk, especially when sitting down to a sweet or sticky treat. They took this information and formed what’s known as the deprivation strategy. Rather than just advertising
You may find yourself wondering from time to time about why we humans drink cow’s milk, a liquid from a species that we've ended up loving so much that we’ve domesticated it and turned into a profitable industry, but, just because you like something, doesn’t mean it’s always good for you and considering more and more families are using cow milk instead of breast milk to feed their infants, we should be more aware of the benefits and possible drawbacks it has. Should we ditch cows milk entirely and pick up the humans milk to replace it, or are we going to be just fine?
While the article brings up lots of strong points that advance the notion that dairy has many benefits, there are also a lot of points that are not fully developed and lack context. Specifically, the arguments over MyPlate, a nutrition guide, and Healthy Eating Plan, a nutrition plan developed by Harvard, expose the presence of unclarified claims. Nichols chooses to include the point that the Healthy Eating Plan recommends a replacement of a dairy drink with a glass of water, as a person should limit diary to one to two servings per day. However, Nichols also cites MyPlate which says that dairy should be
When you consume your dairy products, do you ever wonder what cow it came from? Or when you go down the dairy aisle, do you have trouble deciding which milk to choose? The stores we shop at offer so many different types of milks, with different vitamins, percentage of fats and the prices vary.
The meat provides essential protein for our working bodies and milk supplies up with calcium so we can grow big and strong. It is drilled into our head that we will not lead a healthy life if these items are missing. This however is not true, although it s true that humans need protein and calcium to survive, milk and animal meat are not the best sources to get these from. Many plants and nuts have higher calcium and way more nutrients with no added cholesterol (Stepanaik 33). There is absolutely no reason for us to use animals to get these sources. An article, For Your Health, from Vegan.org argues that humans do not need to consume animal products and that they lead to a number of diseases. The author states that the fat and proteins in meats and cow milk are much too high for human consumption and have been linked to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and a number of other conditions. Humans can get all the protein, calcium, and other nutrients from non animal sources. The author wants humans to stop ingesting animal products in order to be much healthier and to be with less disease. Heart
There are literally two schools of thought with regard to raising your children with or without dairy as a part of their diets. On the one hand, you have the Milk Board, dairy farmers, and many doctors claiming that dairy products are a vital part of a healthy diet. On the other side, you have scientific research, medical experts, and parents who feel that dairy products have no place in a child's diet. The big question then is which group of people is right or are they both correct in their beliefs.
It is important to remember that one billion people on the planet are starving right now and that number is only increasing as the standard population is increasing as well. Seven billion humans on the planet drink 5.2 billion gallons of water and eats 21 billion pounds of food a day, but just 1.5 billion cows alone drink 45 billion gallons of water and eat 135 pounds of food a day (Keegan 1:11). It’s ridiculous that one billion humans are starving and almost fifty percent of the food we grow goes to animals so that we can feed less humans. But this is true, these are the facts, these are the issues. On average you can produce 15 times more protein than we have today if we used plant based proteins (Keegan, 1:15). This is important because we adore our new protein addicted age where people eat plentifully. There’s no way to support eating 9 ounces of meat a person a day (Which is what Americans are eating now) once the population reaches 9 billion it would be better for the world to live as vegetarians (Keegan, 1:18). I would go further to say that even dairy is unnecessary and actually creates problems for us. Cow’s milk for example has thinks such as growth hormones that are supposed to help a baby cow grow. Also cow dairy milk, frozen forms such as ice creams and separated forms such as cheeses causes a hormone imbalance that leads to man boobs and breast lumps along with other issues relating to hormone and thyroid imbalances. We don’t have enough land to generate food to give to animals so we can have that much meat, we don’t even have enough land to sustain these meat and dairy industries incline (Keegan, 1:21). That’s part of the reason we have issues such as desertification, loss of amazon, dust bowl and many other issues. This is not an environmental paper so I won’t get into that. To feed one full grown vegan it takes about 1/6th of an acre versus feeding a full grown meat eater
