Advantages and Disadvantages of Working Relationships Between Foreign Parties Christopher Columbus is a renowned explorer and a household name, despite the fact that it's been over five hundred years since his death in 1506. Many credit him with the discovery of the new world. The staff at history.com wrote, “Though [Columbus] did not really ‘discover’ the New World—millions of people already lived there—his journeys marked the beginning of centuries of transatlantic conquest and colonization” (History.com Staff, “Christopher Colombus”). Some people even hail Christopher Columbus as a hero, despite some of the poor choices he made. Many wonder what prompted King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to fund Columbus’ voyages instead of Spanish explorers, as he was Italian. Fame, fortune, and the promise of spreading Catholicism swayed the king and queen to send young Christopher Columbus around the world on a search for a more direct and efficient path to Asia. Aside from riches, the possibility of acquiring new lands motivated the king and queen to fund an explorer from another country.
It took years for someone to finally believe in Columbus's idea, but he refused to concede. Many explorers wanted to continue sailing around Africa to travel to the Indies. They estimated the circumference of the Earth was almost twice what Columbus believed. Despite the lack of enthusiasm from monarchs, Columbus continued to remain steadfast in his belief that sailing west would be more efficient
