"I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning", a quote from the great Greek philosopher Plato. He knew and taught many subjects, but he still thought music was most important because he knew some of the many benefits music offers. However, many public school systems today do not agree with Plato. When there is a budget cut, the music and the arts programs, as a whole, are affected greatly. Then the responsibility falls onto teachers and students to raise money for the program which does not always go well. Teachers in other schools started to adopt and use his text in their own classrooms. Mason was then allowed to teach music at Hawes School, which started music education in public schools in America. By the 19th century, music classes started becoming integrated, broadening the appreciation for music and music education. Boston, once again, was the leading front on this as well (Grace Ann Stanford, 2012). Fast forward a few hundred years, music education programs can be found in many school systems across the nation, worldwide even. However, music education seems to be low on the priority list, when it comes to budgeting. Music education should have more funding in school systems because studies have shown that music has benefits and give students an alternative option instead of pursuing a higher education. Music today has been used for more than just entertainment. Now with more and more celebrities/singers learning to play their own instruments, it has drawn a new, younger crowd with an interest in playing musical instruments. Researchers have discovered that musical instruction has many additional benefits, such as great improvements to one’s mental health. According to Nature Neuroscience, students that were involved in ‘high quality school music education programs’ performed higher on standardized tests, regardless of socioeconomic status. Statistically, students in top quality music programs scored 22% higher on the English section
