Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and pinterest. Social media dominates modern day interaction. Billions of people use these social media sites. In fact, in 2017, Facebook alone had 1,871,000,000 users. This is just under 2 billion and nearly 25% of the world's population. Other sites are also widely used. Instagram has 600,000,000 users. Snapchat is also wildly popular with 300,000,000 users (Chaffey, 2017). “According to a survey, 22% of teenagers log on to their favorite social media site more than 10 times a day and more than half of adolescents log on to a social media site more than once a day. 75% of teenagers own cell phones, and 25% use them for social media, 54% for texting and 24% for instant messaging. Children, ages 8-18, spend over 7.5 hours a day, 7 days a week using media sites outside of school. (The Impact…, 2010)”. Clearly, it is very common for people to use alternative methods for interpersonal communication. Interaction with friends and family can occur with no face to face meeting. This communication can even happen from the other side of the world. Since it is so convenient for people interact through social media, why even bother to interact face to face? Despite the very wide variety of functions of social media, face to face communication is a more effective and beneficial form of communication. Despite every benefit of social media, it is still not as functional as true social interaction. Face to face interaction is the better than social media because it is the most powerful form of communication. The purpose of social media is to connect people everywhere. It is clear that technology has the ability to connect us worldwide. It is the most effective way to communicate from a great distance and it makes it easy and convenient to follow what friends and family do. However, is it really connecting people? “The purpose of social media was intended to help people share important information and do business much faster (among other reasons) -- we are faced with a very "connected" world. But that virtual connectedness is very shy, confused and often lonely (Knight, 2017)”.
