At first, it looked as though the Union had all the advantages and this would be a short war. First, the Union had the large population, people to fight in the war and work in the factories to make war materials. The North also had the industrial base, the factories to make these war materials. The Union also was wealthier than the Confederacy and could finance the war. The Union had an established army and government, but the Confederacy would have to build their army and government from scratch. Finally, the Union had a navy which they used to blockade the southern coast. But the Confederacy had advantages, too. The Confederacy would be fighting a defensive war, which is much easier than having to invade and conquer a territory, something
The challenges that the Union and the Confederacy faced during the Civil War were very different. Critical weaknesses that seemed unfit for war, plagued the opposing American forces, and would serve to be a continuous obstacle that would need to be conquered by patriotism of the people, for their opposing views. To allow for both sides to be competitive, the efforts put forth had to mold to the varied needs of the armies by both the civilian population and their militaries. To the people in the south the similarity to the colonists in the Revolutionary War, was assimilated to their separatist cause in the Civil War and would be their drive to compete with the dominating Northern states. This mindset started the Confederacy in the Civil
The American Civil War started in 1861 and ended in 1865. The two sides of the war are the Union (North) and Confederacy (South). The South wanted to keep slavery to maintain their economy and they worried that the North would end slavery. The South then seceded, starting the conflict. Around 620,000 people died in the war. Both sides of the war had advantages and disadvantages in the Civil War. Population in the South was small because it was based around farming communities, putting them at a disadvantage because they had fewer people to make up their army. On the other hand, they had great generals and a lot of morale. Meanwhile, the North’s large
The North and the South were prepared to fight a war because of the political advantages each side possessed. The North had an advantage because they had an established, working government. The South had to create a new government after they seceded from the Union. The North’s government had over seventy years to fix any problems in their government. The South also had a political advantage; they were defending their land. This gives the South
In 1861 the American Civil War started. The country was divided into the North (Union) and The South (Confederates). Robert E. Lee was the leading general for the South. Ulysses S. Grant was the leading General for the North. The Union had 23 states which were California,Michigan,Connecticut,Minnesota,Illinois,New Hampshire,Indiana,New Jersey,Iowa,New York,Kansas,Ohio,Maine,Oregon,Massachusetts,Pennsylvania,Rhode Island,VErmont,West Virginia and Wisconsin. The South on the other hand only had 11 which were Alabama,Arkansas,Florida,Georgia,Louisiana,Mississippi,North and South Carolina,Tennessee,Texas and Virginia. The North and many ways had a great advantage in the war because they had more men, more factories to build supplies, and a larger navy. On the other hand the South only had to defend their land from the Invading Union.
In this essay I will be comparing the Union and the Confederacy.I will also be contrasting both the Union and the Confederacy. This war started on the topic of slavery.Another topic was states’ rights.
From the onset of the war, the Union had its obvious advantages. They simply had large amounts of resources of which the South did not. "In all history, no nation of mere agriculturists ever made successful war against a nation of mechanics. You are bound to fail" --Union officer William Tecumseh Sherman to a Southern friend. Over 85 percent of the nation's industry and significant material resources were controlled by the North. The North was able to use take power of their economical advantages to produce military supplies, and replace damaged equipment more rapidly than the Confederacy. On top of that, forces for the field could be re-supplied rapidly because
The Emancipation Proclamation was not a prime factor in the Union's victory over the Confederacy during the US Civil War, from 1861 to 1865. The main factors which contributed to the defeat of the Confederacy included the superior and far more advanced industrial capability of the North and a larger amount of people fighting for and in favour of the Union side. Two other major factors which tipped the scales highly in favour of the Union side were the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and the Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi. There were many other small factors which aided the Union, but none with the importance or impact of the factors mentioned above. However, without the Emancipation Proclamation, it is possible that the Union would have
For one, the North wasn’t as united as the South. While the Confederacy fought for their way of life, the North fought for politicians (Confederate States). They were also fighting in unknown territory. In order to win, they would have to seize control over a large area of land (Davidson and Stoff pg 488). Finally, the North couldn’t find a good military leader for most of the war. Most of the military colleges were in the South, so the North was at a huge disadvantage in leadership and skill (Confederate States).
From the time war was declared all odds were against the South. The North would have inevitably won. Due to the fact that the confederacy lacked in population and a drafting system, had a poor resource industry, and faced the struggle of internal conflict they lost the Civil war. This war that ripped our country apart lasted over four long years in constant battle.
Union and the Confederacy. The Union and the Confederacy would have gone to war anyway without it because people already determined which side that they would choose . For the Confederacy's military strategy come to found out that they only protected its boundaries so that they could fulfill independence and political strategies. The Confederate constitution had dominated gradual emancipation. As for the Union leaders military strategy they were using a pugnacious military campaign to reinstall the Union and the political strategies were using secession as an attack on representative government. I would say that the Union was more successful because with their strategy they deciding to come up with a campaign to restore the Union and that their
In the Civil War, the Confederacy had a medium sized advantage in the war. Even though they had less men, they had a stronger military than the Union. With this, that would give them the ability to protect themselves. Speaking of that, all the South had to do was make sure they could protect their territory until the North wore themselves out. They also had food to provide for the army and the North did not. They also didn’t have a stronger military than them. Since the North had a lot of railroad tracks, canals, and roads to journey towards the South, there was a small problem with the South. They didn’t have much, but it wasn’t like they had to go after them. All they had to do was travel around inside of their territory continuously to protect
Contrast- The Union army was very large to where the Confederate was small. The Union had better artillery, to where the Confederate had to steal their artillery. The Union army was mainly immigrants, the Confederate army wasn’t immigrants. The union had 22 million and the confederate had 9 million.
The Union and Confederacy experienced a similar level of hardship during the Civil War because men from both sides were forced to endure horrific conditions that deprived them of confidence and happiness. In a letter written to his wife on July of 1861, Joseph Milton Elkins brings the battlefield alive through emphasis on the emotional state of American soldiers and their families. As depicted by his writing, negativity became the center of control of the men's lives, for the war left permanent scars in the history of a powerful American nation. Elkins states, for example, that "...[the war] commenced at 6 o'clock and ended at 6 o'clock, it was the hardest battle that was ever fought in America...we lost about 800 in killed and wounded.
“A house divided against itself cannot stand.”1 These words, spoken by Abraham Lincoln, foreshadowed the war that became the bloodiest in all of the United State's history. The Civil War was a brutal conflict between the North and South; brother against brother. With slavery as the root cause, Southern states had seceded from the Union and were fighting for their independence. They became the Confederate States of America (CSA) and were a force to be reckoned with. The Union, however, put up a fierce struggle to preserve the country. If the Civil War was to be a war of attrition, the North had the upper hand because of its large population, industrialization, raw materials, railroad mileage, and navy. But if the war was short lived, the
One of the Union's strengths were that they had a way larger population then the Confederate.Which meant they were always outnumbered on the battlefield (O’Neill, 2016). Since they have a bigger population they have more people that could enlist in the war. The Union was able to put two point one million soldiers on the battlefield while the Confederate was only able to put around 880,000 men on the battlefield (O’Neill, 2016). Since the Union outnumbered the south by alot they were able to overcome the Confederate and take a lot of damage.
