During the presentations there was to presentations that really opened my eyes to the issues we have today in our society. These two presentations were on models in the United States versus other countries and there other presentation was on homeschooling. The modeling one stuck out to me because I have always struggled with being under weight. The magical number that countries had imposed was that all models had to have a BMI of no less than 18%. Since we are surrounded by these images all over the place countries are taking initiative to ban ultrathin models. They set unrealistic expectations that people want to be like them. Since the BMI was so important I thought I would do some research after class and I found out that I have a BMI of …show more content…
The other side I think it is good overall because it is such a competitive career that many go to extremes. Men and women con go to extreme lengths by not eating to stay skinning, or working out all the time but not fueling their body with what it needs. Another thing I learned from the presentation on modeling is that the French government has passed bills that require all digitally altered images, or photo shopped images, to be labeled with an identifier to note that this is not natural. Also this tied in with the fact that modeling industries leads to exploitation of young and vulnerable workers. The video in their presentation stated that the women were feeling more like indentured servants that the high fashion glamour gods that the youth around the world dream of becoming. The modeling careers does not bring in a steady or livable income which leads women to go to extremes. Women are looking for anytime of business they can get and sometimes are uprooted without knowing the full consequences to get a …show more content…
The two things that stuck out to me was that there is no financial support for individuals who chose to homeschool their children, and there are more benefits than I thought about homeschooling. Firstly, when you opt to homeschool you child you are not given money to help with the cost. This makes it very difficult for families who are in poverty to homeschool a child. It costs more money for a child to be homeschooled versus going to a public school, but it does cost less than attending a private school. A child who is homeschooled can do online schooling, but most of the time it is a parent or other older individual teaching a child during the day. If a family is financially challenged it is hard for a parent to stay home to teach their children. It was said that children might not be receiving homeschooling education from someone who is not fully capable of teaching a student. In addition, there are also many positives that come from homeschooling. Homeschooled children do well on standardized tests, and are known to be self-directed learners. They also have the educational freedom to choose or for their instructor to choose what they want to learn. They can learn at their own pace so they can spend more time on things that are difficult and move quickly on things that are easy. The children doesn’t need to be held back by others if they want to move on. It is a much more
In the article “Why I Homeschool: The Answers Change Almost as Fast as My Kids Do. But My Commitment to At-Home Learning Remains Strong.” Amy Thornton-Kelly initially home schooled her three children in order to spend more time with them. This was her only reason, or so she thought. Amy Thornton–Kelly explains the many reasons why homeschooling is the best decision she has made. First, she explains that once her husband and her considered homeschooling “the floodgates opened” to the many benefits of homeschooling. It alleviates stress, allows her kids to learn in a healthier environment and allows her to teach her kids in a more profound way. Second, Thornton-Kelly states that homeschooling allows her kids to better master subjects,
Education in our society is a very important factor in shaping our future. One’s future is depended on the education they receive and everyone is somehow affected by this. Children from the ages of kindergarteners to seniors in high school, college graduates, and stay at home mothers, are all shaped by the education the government provides us. There are many different ways to acquire an education some through private schools, public, charter, and being homeschooled. However, homeschooling is growing more in popularity than it has ever been.
When they say that ordinary people are going to want to become models they make it sound like it’s a bad thing. In reality that is a good thing, the more models the more business. The more models that we have the more clothing and products that companies get to advertise. Also due to that models are meant to be skinny we don’t have many models left, and the models that are modeling as an now many are in serious danger for having eating disorders.
Being homeschooled gives you options for yourself and your surroundings. “They’ve had complete control over their bodies, minds and spirits almost all their lives. As a result, they know exactly who they are and what they’re passionate about” (Source B). Homeschooling makes you think outside of the box. Think learning on a new level, you can still
In the event that a parent chooses to homeschool their kid, they won't associate with individuals that might be difficult to coexist with. They won't know how to confront bullies when the time
For years flocks of children have gotten up at the crack of dawn and gone to the brick building to sit at their desks for eight hours straight, but now a very effective style of school called homeschooling has emerged. Most of todays parents have gone to a public school because homeschooling was not very well known back when they were school aged. Since then, homeschooling has become much more popular and has been proven to be effective. Parents should consider homeschooling their kids as an alternative to sending them to a public school.
Years ago, many parents decided to do homeschool with their children because they think that can teach as well as schools do. Parents teach infants the basic behaviors and knowledge as a way to show them how to behave in society. But, in many cases is not right to think that kids can learn everything from home in order to develop all the skills that we have as social creatures. Parents do not have enough knowledge to educate their children. It causes that kids do not receive a correct education to continue their higher education at a university. It means, a child without the same opportunities. Almost 15% of people that received homeschool did not get into a university and becomes criminals because consider they had not the same opportunity as other people had. Obligatory education can decrease the recruitment on early age from a criminal band. Creating an equality and safer
An example about this issue that I found very interesting are the models of Victoria’s Secret. They are one of the strongest role models for many women around the world, in an article published by Uloop Inc. it is state how 99% of the population has a negative view of their body image, women being the 56%. This negative view can lead to anxiety, damaged relationships, and depression; these numbers have become alarming in a worldwide level. In the past Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show the numbers of viewers were 9.3 million; imaging this excessive amount of people thinking that those models are what perfection is, and what every women should aspire for. This article also talks about the average weighs (BMI) of a model in the Victoria Secret Show, this weigh being 23% less than the average female.
Fashion is everything to society and the media, but everyone wants to look good while feeling beautiful in their own way. Everyone believes that fashion is an easy, fashionable, and sophisticated style. Today, the modeling industry has become negative for older and younger women. The people in the industry do not prefer unhealthy body images such as pictures of overweight women. Women suffer from depression and anxiety. The modeling industry has been very harmful towards women in America. It effects women by not achieving a healthy, being strong, and confident body image regardless of shape and size.
In the other hand parents who choose to home school their kids are faced with a great deal of advantages. Home schooling a child means that a parent has to give 100 percent dedication into teaching there child. One great asset to home schooling is that children are often way ahead in their grade work as compared with their peers in public school. They learn to read much earlier and advance through their subjects much faster and in a more thorough manner, due to more individualized attention and subject-specific attention. By being taught at home, the student has immediate access to the "teacher", and can ask questions at just about any time without having to worry about other students and their learning habits. Parents don’t have to worry about the safety of their child when it comes to home schooling. The child is in the home and always being watched if something where to happen it would be the parents’ responsibility and the parent would know what to do
On one side of the topic, some people will argue that models’ pictures should not be morphed into a thinner, taller, and muscular version of the model. In the words of Hany Farid, “Fix one thing, then another and pretty soon you end up with Barbie” (Schrobsdorff). According to this view, Farid thinks that this technique has gone too far and the software was not made to shed weight, pimples, or imperfections off of the models. By using this software and morphing models photos into something they’re not, this is damaging society. For example, pre-teens and teenagers’ lives are wrapped around the television and social media. When photo editors publish these morphed images of models, it can make these children wonder why they do not resemble the model that is in
Most parents hear the word “home-school” and conjure up many assumptions that are either false or overlooked at. The technology provided, as well as the teaching quality spent on home-schooled children requires a lot of time and effort from the parents; it is an act of dedication and total commitment. According to the Robinson Curriculum, the parents have “little personal time or time alone. If care is not taken to set aside time for yourself, it is easy to never have time alone. They are basically with their [children] 24/7” (The Robinson Curriculum). There are many positives as well as the negatives outlooks pertaining to “sheltering” kids from attending private or public schools. Many adults are
One question many parents of young children have to consider is whether or not they want to homeschool their children or send them to a public school. Over recent years, homeschooling has become much more popular. “There are about 2.3 million home educated students in the United States. This is up from one estimate that there were about 2 million children home educated during the spring of 2010 in the United States. It appears the home-school population is continuing to grow (at an estimated 2% to 8% per annum over the past few years)” (Ray, 2016, p.1). Homeschooling is better than public schooling for many reasons, but some people may disagree with this statement and argue that public schooling is better because of more socialization, access to clubs and sports, cost less and etc. All these reasons can be shown to favor homeschool education by evaluating them through aesthetic, moral, and practical criteria.
If you were to over hear a conversation in a household with children, it isn’t uncommon that you would here bickering and debating between child and parents on their future plans of education. One of the first big discussions would be whether or not to attend a school or to stay home for education. Deciding where a child should further their education is not a decision that should be taken lightly. There is a reason that the decision to homeschool or to send a child to a public or private school is so controversial. Ultimately it should be the child’s decision because they know their learning habits the best. With the guidance of their parents the child will be able to make the best decision for their needs. The environment that children
Homeschool is a way for some kids to stay focused on their subjects and not have any distractions. Some kids have trouble with classroom settings, so the best option is for them to get away from others and focus on what is in front of them. Some kids have been bullied to the point where there is no other option but to be homeschooled. The effects of being homeschooled can be both good and bad and it can take a toll on what the child is feeling and also how they react to people and situations they encounter.A child that is being homeschooled can only so many social skills from their parents and the internet to the point that it will not be able to handle other people in the real world but that is false because most kids that I have met are actually very sociable. One effect being homeschooled can have is that the child has to learn everything from their parents or their tutor. This effect is a good one because a child that is learning from the same teacher will not be afraid to ask questions and voice their concerns about anything. Another effect of being homeschooled is that the child is focusing so much on the work they are assigned that can learn at their own speed and they do not have to slow down or speed up their learning from the others around them. A final effect of being homeschooled is that a child might always be stuck in their house and not get enough exercise.
