When discussing the arguments between Shirky and Russell, two sides are to be taken into consideration; whether the internet is an advantage to an individuals everyday life or a disadvantage. The internet can be clearly seen as an advantage in today’s society. The world is ever-changing and growing and technology is advancing. Advantages are determined by a rhetorical situation concerning the advantages education has made towards more online networking, the psychological growth of communicating and making connections, and the colossal variety of entertainment.
Using the internet for educational purposes might not be a priority for high school students, but they use it more and more everyday in school systems; without even realizing it. According to Harris, it is ideal for school systems to provide education based on the 21st century needs. In other words, schools should supply students with technology and skills that are relevant in todays society, not 10 years ago. The internet allows students to research topics that may be foreign to them and to further comprehend subjects. Students are able to gain from the knowledge and experience of others. It also allows different ways to study the information, like quizzlet, kahoot, and many others. In Qureshi’s article “The Advantages and Barriers of Using Internet in Teaching and Learning,” it is explained that not only does the internet become an advantage to students, but also with teachers. Teachers are better able to change their teaching styles to fit different learning styles of students and to develop individual techniques; which happened to be a factor in the achievement of students. The internet provides for special means, like distance learning and is always growing and becoming better. Students use the internet as an advantage to gather information, to analyze that information, and then demonstrate their understanding.
Another advantage to the internet is communication. It is a fast and easy way to stay connected. There are so many ways of commuting online; like email, social networking sites, blogs, instant messaging, chat rooms, etc. According to psychologists, it is important for a growing adolescent to make connections and build relationships, and
As a whole, the Internet is a vast learning center if used correctly. It is more appealing to the eye, and is much more efficent to access information. As Tim Wilson, a technology-intergration specialist states, "...how do we communicate with students today who have grown up with technology..." (Source B). Teachers have lost hope with students over
A huge beneficial effect of the Internet is time-efficiency because it no longer takes days to find research. Fortunately, it only takes a couple of minutes to do a few Google searches. Another benefit to the Internet, in comparison to the last example, is that it is a channel for most of the world’s information. For Carr, as for others, the Internet is becoming a universal medium. Lastly, it is probable that we may be doing more reading today than we did in the 1970s or 1980s, when television was a choice of interest. It is assumed that we may do more reading today because not only do we have access to a variety of texts, but also a numerous amount of ways of communicating. For example, social media accounts and text-messaging. A negative effect of the Internet is that it is chipping away capacity for contemplation. The Internet is
Firstly, advancing of internet lead to convenient for students to receive informations which are able to influence students’ idea or view more directly. By giving lecture to impart knowledge, teachers’ forms of teaching are always monotonous for students to receive, although they can use projectors or hold some activities in class. By contrast, on the internet, informations appear as not only the forms of documents or articles, but also forms of audio, movies, cartons, computer games, pictures and motion graph. With multitude types of forms, students tend to choose the best way for themselves to understand and remember. Nowadays, it is impossible for us to live without internet, which means internet has already been full of the world, so that it is now affecting every people
First of all, the differences between traditional and modern learning system is the technologies that have be used. Nowadays, we have about more than one technology existed. It is either student decides to be a hardworking or lazy person in order to find the information or study by using this technology. Students should be thankful as they are growing up with the improving technologies that could make their life easier when it comes to study. One technology that we could make as an example is internet as this technology help students improve their learning. The advantages of the internet for the individual student are highlighted, especially the vast amount of information that can be found online at all times: “The World Wide Web is … a virtual library at one’s fingertips ; it is a
Cathy N. Davidson suggests an innovative education system, providing an emphasis in today’s digital era, and claiming that the existing education system needs to be renewed according to the new expectations of the digital era. Davidson states that,” In the last half century, many changes have occurred in the technology field, however, classrooms and educational methods have remained fairly steady for the past years as well in consequence students are not being prepared for the future advances of society.” That being said, it is important to improve and to give a change to the current educational methods, adjusting them to the existing demands of the era that we are living and taking advantage of the resources that it provides. “What if we continued to the lesson of internet itself,
In a review of the literature, recurrent ideas appeared in the research articles reviewed. These ideas include technology as part of education has a conclusive and encouraging impact on students, students demonstrated a greater level of learning and expanded productivity with the use of technology. Both educationalists and students felt technology added significance to their learning experiences. The addition of online education was cost effective as well as advantageous to the learning process. Technology caused teachers to be better teachers. Because of the wealth of information previously only available to students at a prestigious university, teachers are required to keep their assignments relative and backed by this knowledge. Students can out research the teacher on many occasions and
Russell’s review indicated that Shirky’s hasty generalizations resulted in broad conclusions representing himself and/or a small minority of techie people who use the Internet daily. Russell pointed this out as Shirky noted, “When the general public began using digital networks, the idea that everyone would contribute something to the public sphere was assumed to be contradictory to nature.” Russell felt that Shirky’s statement was more indicative of himself rather than the general public. What evidence did he have to support the claim? Additionally, Russell did not feel that collaboration through Internet use resulted in a significant change for society. Russell noted, “The last time I checked we still have to go to work every day and despite some momentary upheavals, the Internet has become one more way for savvy large corporations to make money.” Russell did conceptualize the point that the Internet was beneficial but that it did not impact society in ways that Shirky
”Increased communication abilities benefit the whole world and gives everyone a freedom of expression. ”(Citation C, P.4). The internet expands the ability to share and see ideas. With the internet, it made huge advancements in communications. ”This also cuts down the time
In the article “Technology Changing how students learn, Teachers Say” many different surveys and experiments were constructed to see what the response were toward technology changing the way we think. As stated “roughly 75 percent of 2,462 teachers surveyed said that the Internet and search engines had a “mostly positive” impact on student research skills” (Richtel). This means that majority of the teacher do agree that the internet is making a positive effect on the children. Using technology in the educational field is a different approach on how the student my able to learn or grasp the whole content of that topic or subject. The internet doesn’t only help out with the student learning but it is already help the teacher. Through the internet they can exam the progress of class by averaging out the online homework or test that may be given out to the class.
The World Wide Web had revitalized education by making it easier, and more efficient to teach. Before the creation of the Internet, the most popular and widely used way of teaching was mainly with books and lectures, limiting the speed and efficiency of information to learn, while also limiting the number of units given in a school year. With the Internet, teachers were able to discover and teach topics easily, leading to quicker lessons and topics as they use the web browser and online sources to benefit the speed of the lessons as well as better the students in different ways to educate. In addition to teachers using the Internet, students also greatly used it to help with homework, to fully understand a topic, to help with projects, and to communicate with their teachers. In a study from Pew Internet & American Life Project over students and their interaction with the
At a glance, the internet is one of the best invention ever made by mankind. One of the most important concept the internet had given to us is the power to convert ourselves from a consumer to a participation. In other words, the internet actually gave us a chance to express our opinions, whereas we can only consume when it comes to traditional television. Believe it or not, the internet saves us a huge amount of time in our everyday life. Since the internet is packed with useful informations and with just some simple clicks, students can do their homework or research on anything in the comfort of their room. Compare to the 1950s, whereas if you were to do a research on a certain subject, skimming through thick books in the library was
Today, the Internet is the center of attention for businesses, governments, schools and individuals around the world. It has produced new industries, transformed existing ones, and has become a global cultural experience not only for adults but for children as well. It is a learning tool used to educate in schools and within our homes. The surfacing of the Internet as another means of electronic communication has had a transformative influence on social interaction.
Ph.D Philip Brey of the University of Twente gives us a look at advantages and disadvantages of the internet in his essay ‘Evaluating the Social and Cultural Implications of the Internet’. His general advantages are as stated above; from communication to education and so forth. Brey also gives us examples of disadvantages of the internet. He states that the internet can contain false information and even harmful information. Due to this overwhelming amount of harmful information, it poses the possibility of allowing people to create terrorist items such as homemade bombs. It also allows children the access to seem explicit content such as pornography or graphic videos. The internet also gives pedophiles and child rapists the opportunity to find victims more easy. The web can also hurt commerce in the sense that it is now feasible to download software, movies, or music illegally which hurts publishing sales. People are often hurt by what they read or hear on the internet, which sometimes can result to them self harming themselves, and even suicide. The sad fact is there are bad people in this
Technology can help students in all areas of study. Students need to be able to use this technology since, “Currently and in the near future, it is understood that students need to acquire more autonomous skills of ‘information gathering, analysis, and display’” (Todnem, 2004, p. 1). Furthermore, the use of technology, mainly the internet, provides for variation since “Students find themselves bored and burnt-out of the lecture format to classes, so changing the curriculum and instruction to include things like online assignments and educational videogames can be one clear remedy” (Todnem, 2004, p. 1). Teachers who have implemented technology into their classrooms have noticed changes in their students. The most common of these effects being an increase in motivation. In “Effects of Technology on Classrooms and Students” another positive effect is given “technology effect stressed by many teachers was enhancement of student self esteem” (“Effects,” 2004, p. 2).
However, some would say that within education, the use of technology can influence students to cheat or take the easy way out on their assignments. “Students today can easily access essays, reports, class notes, tests, etc. online, making it that much more difficult for teachers to know if the work their students hand in is original” (Ronan). This dilemma interferes with teenagers processing new information. The Internet is a great tool; however, teens may rely too heavily on it, and worse, believe everything they see. I believe that the internet can be a great source to gain more knowledge, however, one needs to acknowledge how to effectively use this tool to benefit them.
