Disasters are not always preventable, but there are methods we can manage ourselves and others through the disaster. A disaster is defined as “An unfortunate and unforeseen event involving damage or injury” (OED Online). There are two types of disasters. A natural disaster when events are not caused by human interaction. There is also a man-made disaster; these disasters are caused deliberately by humans. Within an organization, Management can create a business continuity plan also known as a disaster relief plan. There are several other names for this plan such as disaster preparedness, disaster contingency planning, and disaster recovery planning. If a disaster occurs then the organization can shift their operations to another location to continue production with minimal work loss. Some organizations fail to develop a disaster plans and can be devastated when an unforeseen major event affects them. An example of this is during September 11th Merrill Lynch lost two datacenters during the attack. Merrill Lynch learned from their mistakes, and after they recovered from the attack they moved their primary datacenter to Staten Island where it runs on a separate electrical grid to mitigate the loss of power in one area. (Kammath 2007) Now that we understand why we need a disaster recovery plan, we need to understand how to develop and plan a solid and reliable plan. To do this management needs to determine the scope of what needs to be covered by the plan. The scope can be categorized into 3 issues. Occupant issues, building issues, and business issues (Gustin 8). The occupant issues are related to the physical staff. When addressing occupant issues, management needs to plan to address the needs of every employee. Management needs to consider disabled workers and possible visitors to the facility when creating a plan. By thoroughly analyzing the occupants of the building, they can make educated adjustments to address the building issues. These include fire escape routes and alternate routes for disabled employees.
