Introduction In this short essay, I will lay out my personal position with regard to spiritual discernment expressed in "Discerning Spiritual Discernment: Assessing Current Approaches for Understanding God's Will" by Dennis Horton. I will also consider other opinions in this appraisal. Analysis I. Personal Position With regard to the survey, I find them all important. However, some are very critical when making important decisions such as career choices. The first six are especially salient. First, one must use their God-given common sense. Secondly, one must always consult God's word as expressed in the Bible. Thirdly, one must always consider the circumstances in looking for doors/windows of opportunity to advance the work of God in the world. Fourth, one needs the peace of the Holy Spirit to be able to make things work. Fifth, one must always consult with wise counsel when making important decisions in ones life. Finally, one must always pray for God's will to map out the correct path to follow. I favor the second approach, which Horton lists the "way of wisdom" which advocates a decision-making process that does not specifically look for detailed and unmediated direction from the Lord. Rather, in this approach it is expected that Christians should rely extensively on their God-given reasoning abilities, the advice of wise counsel and also a clear assessment of their strengths, talents, and abilities.
