Disconnect Disconnect is defined as being separated from others (Dolan, 2011). Historically, being disconnected from others was a form of punishment causing fear because individuals naturally seek the company of their peers (Mandernach, Register, & O’Donnell, 2015). Professional and social disconnect are huge challenges for those working in the online learning environment and can have an effect on the quality of the distance learning environment (Mandernach, Register, & O’Donnell, 2015). Collaboration and lack of brainstorming with a group are considered a challenge when working alone. Faculty who experience feelings of disconnect have decreased job satisfaction and less commitment to their work environment. These feelings of disconnect often lead to a high turnover rate (Hu, 2016). The mere idea of feeling disconnected can manifest when faculty feel a lack of support from administrators. Faculty members who express feeling disconnected miss the social interaction of colleagues. The typical interactions that take place in a traditional work environment aid in building work place relationships and do not take place while working from a remote location. Also, lack of interaction from administration plays a major role when feeling disconnected (Hu, 2016). The physical separation from a traditional work environment may cause what researchers call feelings of disconnect (Burnette, 2015). This stems from a feeling that administrators forget about faculty members when they are not seen face-to-face on a daily basis. Research suggests online adjunct faculty members believe administrators view them as less committed than full-time faculty (Burnette, 2015). Administrators must create an action plan that keeps online adjunct faculty shielded from a feeling of disconnect and provide the same opportunities as those who work full-time in a traditional setting.
