The subreddit r/poker, a sub community on the social media website reddit, is built on discussing many poker games but mostly No Limit Texas Hold’em. In Texas Hold’em, players are dealt two hole cards each and there are five community cards to be used by all players. The objective is to create the best five card poker hand using any combination of hole cards and community cards. The discourse community present on the r/poker subreddit is founded on advice. Those who post to subreddit are usually seeking guidance, and commenters provide direction. r/poker is not a place to banter or brag, but rather a place to learn and grow as a poker player. This is made evident in the explicit rules stated directly on the subreddit. Rule number two of the subreddit states, “Allowances will be made for truly remarkable brag/beat/variance content or good reads” (r/poker moderators). This statement is in regards to posts that do not include advice, but are entertainment based. This shows that the users are really looking to this subreddit to hone their skills and not to have fun. Another explicit rule of the subreddit demonstrates this phenomenon, “Self promotion: We follow a 10:1 rule, for every self promotional item you really need to contribute to the sub 10x as much (comments/threads) that isn 't purely pushing your own stuff”(r/poker moderators).
