Discourse Community Project Paper

As members of modern society, individuals have come together to form a unique community. In a quote by Rollo May, he states, “Communication leads to community, that is, to understanding, intimacy, and mutual valuing.” A discourse community consists of a group of people involving in and as well as communication about particular topics. Each group may vary in different categories but they all share the same goals. The importance of sharing the same goals and values is great because it leads to the true concept of a discourse community.

1. What is the discourse community you are studying? The discourse community that I chose was bearded dragons and other animals of similar characteristics. a. What academic majors, departments, and disciplines is it related to?

Involving a group will have a great impact on our lives. My involvement in college’s football team is an example. The purpose of our group is to prepare for the Med Cup and University Football Association games. Our most important value is to win as much as possible. Furthermore, there are several norms we all keep in mind. One is to play every game with all our hearts. That is, even when we are just playing a friendly game, we should pay our attention to the ball and play as well as we can. Another is to realize the spirit of teamwork. Team cohesion is a very important area explored in sport psychology. Though it has as many uses as there are types of groups and teams, it has an exceptionally large impact on the success of sports teams and their ability to reach their goals (Building a Cohesive Team). The ability to become and remain a unified functioning team, especially when faced with conflict or strong opponents, can mean the difference between winning and losing. Developing a team includes many aspects, including trust and familiarity amongst the players, as well as a strong leader, with whom a strong trust and level of comfort is equally important.

A discourse community is a group of people who share common interest, values and aim to reach the same goals. For example, this English 1301 course where we’ve been assigned to write a paper with the same goal and ideas in mind. A class where we all discuss our views and passions and relate them to English and composition. I am excited to share with you what I have learned so far and the skills that I have acquired in this stimulating English course that has managed to spark my interest in writing after many years of cranking out meaningless papers with no personality or style. I think that one way to solve conflict and build trust on a team is to express the conflict directly and communicate with others in order to solve it. Besides, I think that team needs to create open communication so that every team member will be able to share their ideas and thoughts, and team members have to respect every aspect of other team members because respect can create the trust that will allow members to be vulnerable.

A good team has a shared vision - it knows what it wants to achieve, has members with different strengths, who can make different contributions and includes all members, everybody counts, efforts are made to ensure that nobody feels left out or undervalued. The St. Anthony basketball team is a great example if working together because if it wasn’t for their teamwork then they wouldn’t have been state champs. I have played on many teams, good and bad, throughout my years in the AMHA, but one universal I have learned is that eventually for a team to be successful each player must put aside differences and come together as a team to achieve the ultimate goal. A discourse community comprises of a group of people sharing a common and distinct mode of communication or discourse, especially within a particular domain of intellectual or social activity (Oxforddictionaries, 2017). Some of the discourse communities I consider to be a part of, include an Indian joint family, my peer group, high school education in India, the Apple community and education at Pace university.

An example of a discourse community I choose to talk about in this paper is the JPS Nail Salon located near Elvis Presley Boulevard. I recently became a part of this particular discourse community group by volunteering to help out on the weekends. I thought it would be interesting to dig a little deeper as to how discourse community works out as a whole.

A discourse community comprises of a group of people, especially within a sphere of intellectual or social activity, who share common goals, who support and understand each other using their own specific language or manner of interaction whether verbal or non-verbal (Oxforddictionaries.com, 2017). Two discourse communities I consider to be a part of and that have a distinct impact on my life include my family in India, and my education at Pace university. These communities are a world apart and yet they share a common goal – my well-being and my success.

In the environment today, it is not unusual to see people working in teams to accomplish certain goals and tasks. During our youth, parents and teachers encourage us through various methods to work as part of a team. Whether a sports team, classroom team, or after school activities, parents and teachers and other authority figures start the introduction of working in teams and teaching the value of being able to work together to accomplish a common goal. As people progress through the various stages of their lives, everyone continues to strive to communicate. Communication is a part of everyday life. During my senior year it was my turn to become the leader of our team, and it was my turn to bring our team together. In order to build a strong working relationship with a team you first need to create the proper environment for everyone. For a team to thrive each teammate must care for one another. To create an environment like this our senior class would regularly schedule team-bonding activities to bring everyone closer together. Along with that, all of the players knew that they could come to us if they needed help with anything, or if something was wrong. The second crucial part of building a strong working relationship with a team is communication. My senior class and I knew that we had to effectively communicate what we expected from our team, and have everyone buy into a common goal (win a championship). We also knew that we had to allow everyone on the team a voice, so we created an environment where people could speak their mind if they wanted to, and we would keep an open mind.
