Discourse Community Research Paper

The discourse community that I'm going to talk about and that shaped my identity is my youth group discourse community. The audience for this would be anyone who wants to know about my experiences with this discourse community. I believe that the audience would be interested in this because they would like to know more about this discourse community and how it forms the different identities in it. The purpose I am hoping to get out is for my discourse community to be explained in this essay and to show what my discourse community is all about. My discourse community is called Jobs Daughters International. It has many social values and has influenced my identity in many ways. The social values that it has is just teaching the skills that are formed and brought out in the discourse community.

To be a part of a discourse community, one must be credible, possess factual knowledge and draw on the values of its members to be accepted into the community. At the same time, a person must learn typical ways people in that community communicate and argue. They share a certain genre—type of writing. Members of discourse communities provide information and feedback that are imperative in order for that discourse community to grow. In the following paper, I will discuss three discourse communities and a genre that they typically use: people who read Nutritional Facts religiously, college students, and industrial organizational psychologists.

In order to be accepted into a discourse community, a person must learn typical ways people in that community communicate and argue. In this paper I will prove that I entered the discourse community of my high school soccer team by acquiring knowledge, establishing my credibility, and learning the game I love. A discourse community is a social group of people that share a set of discourses, understood as basic values and assumptions, and ways of communicating through written texts and share common goals, such as academia. There is usually some type of discussion, which is called discursive practices. Usually, these discursive practices involve genres, which are types of texts that are recognizable to the readers and writers. In the essay, The Concept of Discourse Community, John Swales give you some things to look for and consider when trying to figure out what is happening in any situation where language and texts play a part: What are people doing here? In the first few weeks that I have attended my first year college English class, we have discussed what discourse communities are and how they are integrated into everyday life. Each one of these communities consist of people who share similar goals, have specialized vocabulary, and have a priority to implement a language that mutually enables members to function together towards those goals. There are a number of things that I still need to do to revise my draft of the Discourse Community paper. First, I must check whether I have answered all the research questions required. I also must make sure I have completed all the activities that are also mandatory for this paper. For instance, I have to figure out where I will include the thirty-minute interview of the International Relations professor that I am going to conduct on Friday. Including the interview will allow me to properly answer the following questions that concern how research is conducted, what is the writing style like, and elaborate others. The more proof or evidence I have, the better my argument will me.

Effective writing allows for both the participation and addition of knowledge in discourse communities. A discourse community is a group of people that develop and share a sense of identity primarily through the sharing and exchanging of information on a specific subject or field. The two main form of communication in discourse communities are through reading and writing. Through reading one becomes familiar and starts to understand a community, and writing is when one participates in it. Each discourse community develops its own unique technical language, often referred to as lexis. The lexis allows communication between the community to be precise and to the point [6].

Discourse Community Project A discourse community is a community that shares the same "discourses" or values or goals as their community. An example of this would be a sports team or organization. Players of these specific teams all work together to achieve a common goal; to win. These players have a coach that is a powerful leader and that individual makes them strive to be the best players they can be. Moreover, it is important for each player to have trust in each other and to form bonds.

Present a clear picture of your discourse community. Who are its members? What specialized language/texts/rituals are associated with it? Why should it be studied at all? You should have discussed these ideas in your research proposal. Here is where you realize them with materials you gathered from your discourse community.

In the field I am only thinking about the ball and making a goal. That is a discourse community I can identify myself being a part of. What is a discourse community you may ask? A discourse community is defined as a group of people involved in and communicating about a particular topic, issue, or in a particular field. We all belong to multiple discourse communities.To earn a position of a discourse community one must possess accurate knowledge, establish reliability of members to be accepted and learn to persuade other members of the community. The discourse community that I identify with personally and the profession I plan to pursue is the world of film production. However, there are many jobs that need to be done on a film set leading to there being multiple discourse communities within the film industry, what I want to focus on specifically is the DP, otherwise known as the “director of photography”. According to John Swales, a respected written communication analyst, a discourse community is described as a group of people that have the same goals or purposes, and use communication to achieve these goals. In addition, “A discourse operates within conventions defined by communities, be they academic disciplines or social groups” (Swales, 119). This is not be confused with a speech community, “a community sharing knowledge of rules for the conduct and interpretation of speech” (Swales 121). A discourse community is a group of people that act the same way, this can occur in a school, in a hobby, a job, or other activities you do with repetition. From a young age, I have learned to be prepared for everything thrown in my way, from talking to people that think differently, to the workload in college. The only thing I can think of that would contribute to this strength is my Scouting career that began when I was six years old. This is my main discourse community, because it has taken me ten years to get to the esteemed final rank of Eagle Scout, so I have a lot of connections established in the community. During the 10 years in which I have had in the community, I had to go to through the ranks of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts with each rank for Cub Scouts taking a year and Boy Scouts about half of a year.

My discourse community is SESHOLLOWATERBOYZ or S.H.W.B. that is four friends Bones, Xavier Wulf, Chris Travis, and Eddy Baker, and their fans. I’m in the fans section of the discourse community, but the artists consider all real fans a part of S.H.W.B. Which is why I don’t classify my discourse community as “Fans of S.H.W.B.” Bones older brother Elliott also deserves to be mentioned, because he is the man behind the scenes and has set up tours for S.H.W.B. and is the closest thing to a manager they have. My discourse community is really cool to the people in it.

Music has always been a thing that has interested me. The idea of people putting their talents together to create something has always amazed me. Being in a discourse community like music is always going to be difficult starting out. Working with others was never my strong suit, and all of the preparation and studying stressed me out. It sucks to try very hard and have it all result in nothing. It is the idea of perfection that everyone strives for.
