Canada, often referred to as America’s hat, is located on the northern border of the United States of America. It offers a rich history indicative of its Native American, British, and French roots. Bordered by three oceans and a country, Canada covers approximately nine million square kilometers (United States Central Intelligence Agency). Similar to the United States, one will find many mountains and plains to the western side of Canada (United States Central Intelligence Agency). Unlike the United States, though, the southeastern area features many lowlands (United States Central Intelligence Agency). While most of Canada’s land is contiguous, the area north of the Hudson Bay consists of many islands of varying sizes. Canada’s population consists of approximately thirty-five million people spread over nine million square kilometers (United States Central Intelligence Agency). Despite Canada having the second largest area of land mass, ninety percent of this population is situated approximately within one …show more content…
However, it still faces discrimination against the native people. The indigenous peoples of Canada make up approximately 5% of the population, but were the victims of twenty three-percent of the countries homicides in 2014, with men being the most at risk (Murphy). Additionally, more indigenous people were accused of murder than anyone else, with one-third of those accused being indigenous (Murphy). There might not be a way to prevent immediately the outright murder and discrimination of the indigenous people without infringing on the rights of everyone. However, the Canadian government and activists groups could promote equal treatment of these peoples by speaking out against the discrimination and racism. This way, society would naturally disfavor those who discriminate against people without probable cause. Additionally, this would not have repercussions against anyone in the distant
The Arctic: it is an integral part of the Canadian identity, recognized internationally by jokes about pet polar bears, and living in igloos. Joking aside, the Arctic is an important part of Canada, making up 40% of the country’s landmass, and home to roughly 100,000 Canadians. In addition to being part of Canada, it is also a source of untapped economic wealth, particularly with the recent effect of global warming on the polar ice caps. It is also home to the fabled Northwest Passage, a sea route capable of reducing shipping time drastically, by providing a more direct route from Europe to North America, or Asia to Europe; however, it is because of these aforementioned resources that the sovereignty of the Canadian Arctic has been jeopardized.
The United States of America and Canada are two of the largest countries on this earth. They are compared to each other very often, and they have many differences, along with great similarities as well. They are both taken into consideration as unworldly, youthful countries, and historically, they have also originated around the same time. These two countries are very different when it comes to a social, cultural, and political viewpoint.
The world and its features we see surrounding us today have not been the same throughout all of time . A lot of people believe that the way the Earth looks today is the way it has looked since the beginning. This belief is far from true. The Earth has a history that has evolved over time just like everything else. We can view the history by examining the Earth’s crust in areas. The region of the Earth that is presently known as Canada has the world’s oldest history which makes it unique. Throughout this paper I will discuss how the area known as Canada became what it is.
*Modern Canada is very different from the past. Canada is the second largest country by total area in the world, with ten provinces and three territories. How do you think Canada came to be, with so many differences? Some ask why aren't we part of the United States?
Canada is located on the continent of North America as the northernmost part with the United States bordering to the south and west. In the 1900’s a prominent English scholar Gilbert Murray said: “There is in the world a hierarchy of races;[some] will direct and rule the others, and the lower work of the world will tend in the long run to be done by the lower breeds of men. This we of the ruling colour will no doubt accept as obvious.”(Walker; 1997) It was very true at the time; everywhere you looked you could see that white men assumed all roles of responsibility. Canada has been fighting a never-ending war against racism in the 19th century. It. It has modified or created many laws to help try to combat the discrimination that exists within our country. Canada is the largest North American continent by land area. It is also the second-largest country in the world in terms of land area. Canada is home to 35 million people. It borders the United States. Ottawa is the capital of Canada. It is also the fifth most populous city in Canada.
I would tell my co-workers that I don’t agree with their statement. Being a Canadian makes you just as responsible to help out other Canadian citizens, especially the ones who have been on this land before colonizers. Respect shouldn’t be optional but given to the Native communities who have suffered to make Canada what is known today. Because of certain aspects of Canadian history, past colonialism actions are still prominent today and are affecting Native communities greatly. For instance, the legacy of the ‘Indian princes’ and the ‘squaw’ still remains prominent in our society. Taking the recent case of a featuring Cree writer named Rosanna Deerchild, In 2015, Maclean's documented her experience of facing discrimination. “They call me a
Canada is one of the world’s most pluralistic and active immigrant welcoming nations. Compared to every other Western democracy, Canadians are more likely to say that immigration is beneficial, less likely to believe that immigrants are prone to crime, and more likely to support multiculturalism and to view it as a source of pride.(The Current State of Multiculturalism in Canada and Research Themes on Canadian Multiculturalism, 2008-2010. Ottawa: Citizenship and Immigration Canada, 2010. Will Kymlicka.) However, a closer examination of historical record reveals that racial discrimination has been detrimental in Canadian society particularly with respect to law enforcement and the judicial system. Profiling refers to police organizations creating
In 2016, the population in Canada was 36.29 million and 3.855 million square miles. Although Canada is a country, did you know that the state of California alone had a higher population than the entire country of Canada in 2016? It is amazing to think that there is such a small amount of people living in that large of a region, considering it is the second largest country in the world right after Russia. One reason that the population in Canada could be so small compared to the amount of land is the weather conditions and terrain. Canada’s lowest recorded temperature was -81.4 degrees fahrenheit and Canada has more lakes than the rest of the world’s lakes combined.
Canada is one of two countries located in North America and is the second largest country in the world. It is situated just north of the United States and constitutes the northern part of the country, excluding Alaska. Over the years Canada's culture has been influenced by European culture and traditions, mainly that of the French and British. Canadian culture has also been influenced by the countries' first people, the Aboriginals, as well as the newer immigrated population (Wikipedia, 2007). Canada consists of ten provinces and three northern territories, almost all of which are "rich in land and natural resources" (Bailey, par. 2). Canada is often referred to as a mosaic community because there is such a wide variety
Regions are necessary to understand a piece of land in a meaningful manner and to successfully advance civilization using the surrounding natural resources. Canada, being the second biggest country in the world, is home to numerous biomes, many forms of natural resources and a very diverse population. However, Canada is united by the different patchworks of regions that creates it and is dependent on them to grow. Just like how geographers define regions, the regions themselves define the country. The contrast between the northern tundra contrasted with the milder border-defining south gives the impression that Canada is much colder than it actually is.
A few years ago in Smalltown, CA a burning cross was placed in the lawn of a visible minority family. Although the media seemed shocked at this explicit racial attack and portrayed the attackers as a group of abnormal, twisted deviants, I was not surprised. As an Asian student who is writing her Sociology honours thesis on visible minorities in Canada, I know on a personal and academic level that racism in Canada does exist. Although explicit racial incidents are not a common occurrence, they do happen. Here at school, a visible minority student left the school when a car sped past her, while the young men inside shouted racial slurs. Two weeks ago The school paper published an article about a group of
Canada has an extremley large geography which plays a tremendous role on many factors that affect Canadians. These factors both help and hinder Canada economically, socially and politically. The geography of Canada has also caused regions to form. For the most part, these regions exist due to physical that are present in Canada's landscape. Canada's geography has also had a large impact on the influences that affect settlers. Canada's relatively low popuation in comparison to the large land mass make Canada a place where people who desire to settle in high population, urban areas or large, isolated, and low-trafficked areas. The high population of people near the Canadian-American border is also a unique feature of Canada, due to the
