Harper Lee set her book “To kill a Mockingbird” in a sleepy old town that is located in the southern part of Alabama . Lee based maycomb county on her hometown in Monroeville. Scout describes the town as a very slow and boring town because there aren't other places besides school and church. They also mention that there is no money to spend and also nowhere to spend it because the story is taking place during the great depression. Maycomb county is also described as a safe town where people don’t have to lock their doors, but is undercut by racism that divides people by their race .
