At the start of the book, McCarthy establishes that the man and boy live in a world where everything has been destroyed. The land is ruined, little life survives, and danger is everywhere as the man and boy make their way south along the road. This danger is signified by the care they take at hiding their cart along the side of the road, the mirror they use to make sure nobody is behind them and their constant search for signs of smoke or fire. The novel seems to have a strong focus on the bond between the man and his son. It seems that the only reason that the man is still alive is to take care of his son and, without him, the man has no hope for the future. Next, a theme of dreams emerges.
