Question Describe at least ONE character or individual in the written text(s) that helped you to understand an important message. Explain how the character or individual helped you to understand this message. In the novel “The Body” by Stephen King, a twelve year old boy named Chris has helped me understand an important message, which is to never give up on our dreams. Chris suffers from having bad reputation at his town due to his family all being bad and they think he would turn out bad as well, “I know what people think of my family in this town. I know what they think of me and what they expect”. Because of this, Chris hates his family and wants to be a good person instead of like them. Chris’s dream was to prove everyone wrong that he would be a bad person. Chris has shown the importance of friendship and helping friends to have a good future. When Chris and his friends were on a journey to find the dead body, he had a conversation with Gordie about their future. Chris wanted the best for Gordies future, so he convinced Gordie to study hard and go to university. However, Gordie wanted to stick with his friends instead of going to university because “I’ll meet a lot of pussies”, but Chris said, “Your friends drag you down Gordie. Don’t you know that?”. This quote shows that Chris …show more content…
After studying hard in high school, Chris along with Gordie “were both accepted at the University of Maine”. This shows that Chris has became a successful person instead of being a bad person. Gordie had also gotten accepted into university, which would of never happened without Chris convincing him to not stick with his friends. The other boys, Vern and Teddy, had gone different pathways and end up being bad people, while Chris and Gordie end up being successful. This encourages readers that if you work hard towards your dream, you will achieve
The teachers bring their students together as they did a classroom exchange, so students can get a lot from each other and from the schools. Melanie, a smart girl who went to a Public high school, knew what she was capable of, and teachers also saw it in her that she would go off to college, but then she saw the other side which was the private school, while Jonathan also went to a Public school he did not see himself going to college and no teachers thought he would, and he ended up going to college. According to Chana Joffe-Walt, “you go through something to just get turned down there’s a waste to say would you’ve been better off not going to this experience” (“3 miles”). If Melanie would not have gone to the private school, which is the other side, she would have gone to college. As soon as she went to the private school, her way of thinking changed, and she saw herself not going to college anymore. Melanie thinks that she lost her opportunity of going to college just because she saw the other
People working on their dreams will encounter unmotivated, ignorant individuals who will try to convince them that nothing is possible. Nonetheless, they overcame the prejudice and heavily relied on determination and motivation to succeed. Because they realize that it is achievable and crucial to accomplish their ambition. When comparing “The Rose that grew from Concrete” By Tupac Shakur and “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night” by Dylan Thomas, it is seen that both authors focus on how people must not give up, yet they have completely different perspectives which they express using personification and symbolism.
A role model helps create an introspective attitude towards a person’s life. Having a positive role model drastically changes the attitude and fervor you have for life. Unfortunately, role models can be equally harmful as they are beneficial. Wes Moore lived in an era when discrimination was rampant, an environment where there were very few positive role models. Despite Tony’s effort to preempt Wes’s degradation, Wes made a few bad decisions a long the way to push him away from the path of a better life. “Send them a message” Wes would tell himself in volatile situations. He hasn’t been able to learn to control his feelings because of his brother’s detrimental motto. In spite of Tony’s best intentions, his actions were completely not true to his words. Although it can be seen as inevitable, it cannot be denied that Tony’s action had a huge impact on Wes’s course of action. The author, on the other hand, was exposed to a positive role model through military school. With a black male positive role model to look up to, the author became introspective and reflective about his life. This change ultimately shaped him to become a more disciplined person; which helped him stay on the path of a normal
Question: Discuss how the author has positioned you to respond to the characters/ subjects in the text.
One of the main characters. He is from Shallow Creek where his family runs a farm and he believes to have his own ranch. Apparently he was known to be violent as noted by his mother before going to the Brick House. There is a great age difference between Vanessa and himself as he starts highschool as Vanessa is 6 years old. Believes in his own fantasies throughout the story (Duchess and Firefly, becoming and engineer, etc). A child-like mind allows easy communication with the children that run around his house but not with the others in his household, absorbing their words like he did when facing Grandfather Connor. Story always seems to mention his clothing when he returns after disappearing for a while. (When Vanessa and Chris first meet, when he comes back as a salesman, hospital clothes, etc.) Suffers from a mental breakdown after 6 months in WWII. Goes back to his delusions after being discharged. (I could not know whether the land he journeyed through was inhabited by terrors, the old monster-kings of the lake, or whether he had discovered at last a way for himself to make the necessary dream perpetual.”) Slowly detaches himself from the real world to hole up in his own little world. Vanessa picks up
Redeployment, a national book award winner by author Phil Klay is a powerful, informative book about the Iraq war. It is composed of twelve incredible stories. The most memorable story for me is titled “Bodies.” The title got my attention emotionally and logically. Making sense of life, to readjust in the civilian world is the main theme of this story, which I believed it is a struggle to find direction to continue to live life and not just exist. Manipulation was another theme that made the process of connecting with people less stressful. However, it was not the most effective method.
With a silent yet inescapable list of expectations, the pressure of society, and his damaged parents, one could believe that the adventure he embarked on was a way to remove himself from his destructive environment. However Chris had never experienced independence in his life. He felt separated from everyone with few friends and a well-off family that was tragically broken, and
Chris also realizes that material things are just that and nothing else in life. Chris
The first thing I have learned from the story is that every dream I can have doesn’t only be enough to follow them. Instead, I need to inspire myself through opening my heart and try to accomplish them. Secondly, regardless of the time and effort requirement, it is not important to look back. Lastly, as in the story ‘’every blessing ignored becomes a curse’’, have found it to be true because if you are not positive for what you have, you will for sure regret after losing
Chris makes sure his son gets sleep and gets to eat. When he eats at the restaurants, his son is the only one eating. He wants to keep him happy, so he took him to a football game and got him a basketball. This shows that Chris cares for his son and he wants to keep him happy. This also shows that Chris wants to keep his son safe. Chris was able to take care of his son and to make him happy. Chris wanted him to have a better experience in life. Through perseverance, Chris achieves his goals by taking care of his son.

Kids tend to not fully grasp the seriousness of certain situations due to their immaturity; This was the case of the four young boys in Stephen King’s novella: The Body. The story describes the journey these boys partake in, a journey in which they were determined to find the dead body of a 13 year old boy. But the journey ended up being a bigger adventure than they originally set out on, and even proved to be life changing for them; Especially for one of the boys in particular, Gordy, who learns the true gravity of death, along with other valuable life lessons. Gordy is the focus in this novella because he is the stand-in for a young Stephen King. Most of the events in this story are true and have actually happened to King, which forever

All this is voiced in one way or other when Chris talks to his son in the movie. In one scene when Chris is playing basketball with his son, he says he never made it as a basketball player and his son wouldn't make it either. And just immediately after, he tells the kid, "Don’t ever let someone tell you, you can’t do something. Not even me." Or at another time he says, "You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they wanna tell you that you can’t do it. You want something? Go get it. Gardner". And that's what Chris does - he gets out there, works himself out and makes it - really makes it, giving hope to a lot of others like him. Not only does this scene voice that people should focus of the strength of trying despite their failures but it also depicts the love that parents have for their children can directly impact the children. This scene especially shows that was parents say and do can have a direct effect on the children. By Chris telling his son to never let anyone tell him he can not do something and that if he has a dream to go get it. These are strong words that reflect what most parents wish to teach their children. To never
