1. Explain what HR management is and how it relates to the management process.
Human Resource Management is the process of acquiring, training, appraising, and compensating employees, and of attending to their labor relations, health and safety, and fairness concerns. The HR management function is all about the staffing activity. Staffing is all about personnel management. Staffing is basically determining what type of people you want to hire and the selection of those people. You have to conduct job analyses and planning labor needs. • A staff manager is a manager who assists and advises line managers. The staff manager has staff authority. It gives the manager the right (authority) to advise other managers or employees.
Because staff managers generally run advisory departments, human resource managers are usually staff mangers. The HR management has many responsibilities of line and staff (HR) managers and the three distinct functions are: a line function, a coordinative function and staff function.
• In a line function the HR manager directs the activities of the people in his or her own department and in related service areas. The HR managers are likely to exert implied authority, although HR managers generally can’t wield line authority outside their departments.
• In a coordinative function HR managers also coordinate personnel activities, a duty often referred to as functional control.
• In a staff function the HR manager assists and advises the line managers in for example hiring, training, evaluating, rewarding, counseling, promoting and firing employees, and this is the heart of the HR manager's job. The staff function plays to roles: An innovator role because they are providing up-to-date information on current trends, and also an employee advocacy role. HR employee advocates is the role of HR about knowing the employees of the organization and their main interests.
