When most people--both adults and children--sit down to watch a Disney Pixar movie, they do not think much about the content they are about to view and the effect that it will have on their lives; they watch for entertainment purposes only. And for good reason: Disney Pixar’s unique plots, engaging stories, charming characters and soundtracks always leave their audiences wanting more (Kümmerling-Meibauer 39). However, Disney Pixar films, while decidedly diverting, go beyond straight-forward entertainment. In fact, Disney Pixar designers are also well-known for hiding “Easter eggs”--unexpected features--that reward fans who pay close attention to the films’ content. Alongside the memorable characters and repeated visual motifs are life lessons and compelling content that may be slowly shaping the sensibilities of future generations. For example, the film WALL-E, whose title character is a small waste-collecting robot that sets out on a journey to save mankind, does not include many characters with stereotypical genders. At the beginning of the film, a robot is seen trying to decide whether a “spork” should be stored with other forks or spoons. After a few minutes of contemplating the conundrum, the robot decides to create a new category for the spork: “This moment, resplendent with contemporary gender philosophy, allegorizes the significance of post-human theory for the film and gender representations” (Cheu, 256). Disney Pixar also destroys female and male stereotypes by creating unique main characters. Specifically, Wall-E has distinctively masculine vocal patterns but also has an unquestionable obsession with show tunes and musicals--a characteristic that is stereotypically recognized as feminine or gay. The other main character, Eve, has a feminine, higher-pitched voice. but has no problem wielding a death-dealing laser ray gun arm.
