One day, the island’s fishermen are unable to catch any fish and the crops fail. Moana learns that many centuries ago, a demigod named Maui stole the heart of Te Fiti, a goddess, and this is the reason why her island is suffering. The only way to save her island is to find Maui and persuade him to restore the heart of Te Fiti. Moana leaves her island and travels across the sea to find him, an act that is prohibited on her island. Moana contains the elements of transcendentalism, such as the idea of nature being an escape, and inner spiritual connections.

Children were running around inspecting the entire store while their parents watched over them in hopes they wouldn't break anything too expensive. In all this confusion, I had lost sight of my younger sister who was now busy looking at the collection of princess dolls, with a few other girls. As I made my way towards my sister, I couldn't help but notice that many of the dolls had been glamorized and put into extravagant dresses, emphasizing their princess status. Mulan no longer had short hair or armor but long flowing hair, dressed in a traditional Geisha dress completely dismantling her warrior status, emphasizing her feminine qualities instead.

Moana is a unique film that is released by Walt Disney in 2016. A typical Disney film consists of a beautiful princess who wants to find a true love in her life; however, Moana, the main character of the film, broke all the stereotypes and expectations of a Disney princess since Moana’s conflict does not arise from a love interest, but from a desire to save her island. The story of the movie is that there is a girl who lives on the island, but her island is dying because Maui stole the heart of Te Fiti. Moana (2016) is an adventure-packed film in every sense of the word; although it does have some humorous scenes. For example, in one scene Maui, Moana’s demi-god companion, uses Moana’s dumbfounded pet chicken, HeiHei, to carve his name on her oar while explaining, “When you use a bird to write with it’s called tweeting” (Lasseter, J. & Shurer, O., Clements, R., Hall, D., Musker, J., & Williams, C., 2016). Walt Disney Animation Studios is a large part in America’s entertainment industry. Reaching children and adults through their many platforms, Disney has been influencing people for over 90 years. These films have played a huge role in the society displays of gender roles. This is seen in the representation in their characters, more importantly females. Culture has been going through changes in the past couple of decades and Disney reflects the changes in society through its characters. Popular culture rises with each of Disney’s films and become well known with their recognizable roles. The Disney Princess line up has been a rising influence since 1937 with Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and continues to present with the current release of Moana, the most revolutionary Disney Princess as of yet.

Although, Ariel wanted to experience life on land, Disney children wanted to experience life in the sea. One was drawn to Ariel's world. It was something new, different, and exciting. One's imagaination was satisfied because of Ariel, and one would play mermaids in the pool. One knew that, similar to Cinderella's story, dreams can come true, one can find true happiness, and love conquers all. One can find Ariel with Prince Eric, and her legs, at the Fantasy Faire. Or, one can find Ariel alone in Ariel's Grotto. Ariel takes us back to a childhood of dreams, singing, happiness, talking sea creatures, and a life "under the sea."Who doesn't love Mickey and Minnie Mouse? Not only is Mickey the mascot for Disneyland and all things Disney, but Mickey is the most lovable character on this planet. Children turn to Mickey and Minnie Mouse to make them laugh. Nothing can go wrong in one's life if one has Mickey and Minnie by one's side. Mickey and Minnie Mouse have been through it all. Childrens' first day of school, doctors' visits, dentists' visits, family vacations, you name it. Through the good and the bad, Mickey and Minnie are there.

The Disney movie Moana like many others introduced to us a different culture. What is unique about the Disney animated movie Moana is that you are being introduced to all kinds of Polynesian cultures. The movie begins with a story of creation. At the beginning, there was only the ocean. When Te Fiti emerged, her heart, allowed the creation of life and multiple islands.

The story started in King Triton’s palace were there was a huge party and Ariel was the main singer! Unfortunately Ariel don’t show up. King Triton soon found out that she went to the surface and he banned her from going up there, afraid that the humans would kill Ariel like her mother. Angry, she went to her grotto with Flounder (and Sebastian, who was sneaking behind them) to show the items she collected. King Triton finds out about the Grotto and destroys it. Heartbroken, Ariel swims away and saves Prince Eric’s life. On her way back home she meets Ursula and trades her voice so that she could

The inspiration young girls may gather from the movie poster is amplified by the text above Moana’s head. “Brave Like the Sea.” This text implies that Moana is as brave as the sea, something not often portrayed by other advertisements. “Brave” is a word often applied to males only, leaving females completely out of the narrative that they could ever exhibit this trait. However, this poster flips the switch and boldly states that a female is capable of being brave, and provides a strong example for the audience.
