Distance is a common theme shown in “Home on Leave” by Frances Richey and “The Field” by Mason Jennings. They both depict a soldier coming back from the army that is completely different compared to their past self and the person his parents used to him as. The distance was not just physical, but also emotional to his parents. The distance was very physical, as the soldier is far away from home and enduring obstacles the parents would never have to face. As the soldier makes the army his home, his gives up his real home which creates the separation. The army changes him, and the parents realize this when his “first letter came, it sounded nothing like [him]” (Jennings 1). Even after when he comes home, he acts completely different than he
