Creative writing papers are a struggle for everyone. The distractions from others, surroundings, or even oneself can affect how creative your paper is. Mary Oliver the writer of “Of Power and Time” has proven to people the true distractions from writing. The distractions pop up from thoughts, other people, or surroundings. The thoughts that pop up happen to everyone not even just when writing a paper. Different thoughts pop up all the time and it seems almost impossible to keep a clear mind. Distractions from other people is also a big thing that happens when someone is trying to write. Trying to zone all the surrounding people in the room is a very hard task to handle. Commotion is a key to distraction. Different surroundings can also be a distraction. Distractions come from all surroundings. It does not matter these will affect one's mind and distract a person. Oliver has used her knowledge, persuasion, and emotion to tell students what to look out for when trying to write a paper. Mary Oliver uses the state of convincing in her paper to convince people that her ways of commitment and solitude is the way to write a paper. Oliver states that in order to create a paper that is convincing one need to be committed and need to have time to themselves to write the paper. Oliver states that when one is writing a paper they need to be somewhere where they are alone with no distractions. They need to have complete silence but also need an open mind when writing. She states that
It was the year 1996 in the month of June, I will never forget that month and year because it
“Wake up,” that’s what I heard after passing out from all the blows to the face. My vision is blurred I’m trying to stay awake but I lost consciousness; all of a sudden I felt a splash of coldness on my face, and I woke up gasping for air. The man with the deep ominous voice said, “Wakey wakey little man” I replied, “where the h*ll is Mako!” when I was fully aware of where I was, that’s when I started to panic.
Writing is a powerful tool for communication and connection. As an extension and expression of the mind, writing is as much about the mental processes of the author as it is about the final marks laid to paper. As we write, we hold in mind our own thoughts on the work, anticipate the reader’s thoughts, and think both in concrete and abstract ways in order to accomplish the task at hand. Whether an academic research paper, a novel, or text message to friends, writing seeks to engage, persuade, or impress concepts upon an audience. Like language and other art forms in general, the practice of writing is ever-evolving and is subject to cultural and contextual influence, expectations, and conventions. Each writer holds a theory
“Some people say I was lucky to survive, other will say I deserved it for the choice I made. I’m here to say I was lucky, it’s never ok to say your life isn’t worth living even at your worst you can always look forward tomorrow will come and if you put your mind to it you’ll see that anything is possible.” – Stephen McGregor Professional Paralympian
The article Writing in the Age of Distraction by Cory Doctorow is an article talking about how the Internet is often misconceived as a place where procrastination comes alive. In said article, Doctorow makes a detailed list on how he manages to avoid procrastination and get work done, while still using the Internet. The first step he lists is setting a goal for yourself and sticking with it. Choose a number of words or number of pages you want to type for that day and aim for it. Do not stop before you reach that goal. Similarly, Doctorow says, once you do reach that goal, stop for the day. Stop in the middle of your sentence even, so that the next time you sit down to work, you know where to start from. In his exact words, Doctorow states:
No matter how much you enjoy or do not enjoy reading and writing we all have a story how it has impacted out life. Literacy has a big impact on us all, if we didn’t have it we would be lost. We wouldn’t be able to text our friends and family to stay in touch. We wouldn’t have anything to do with social media. We would lose entertainment. Those are just the basics of why reading and writing has a big impact on our lives. Majority people have a deeper more meaningful experience with reading and/or writing. I personally have never been the best at writing because I have issues with grammar. I have never enjoyed reading because I am a very slow reader and have a hard time getting into books. But I too have a reason to love reading and writing. One reason I began to enjoy
A sensation brushes against my body from slight movements, but nothing I can place as my eyes stay glued shut, almost like it would be painful to see my surroundings.
You used to think the philosophy 'you only live one' is the most ridiculous excuse for justifying everything you've ever heard of - if you're meant to be reckless and live as fast as you can, 'there's a million and one ways to die' sounds much nicer. Explore them. Investigate them. Enjoy them. Cherish everyone of them, especially that split second between when you lean back in your chair and it hangs midway in air so close the the ground that the only thing you can think of is 'that is it.'
I can create my most creative writings in a peaceful enviroment. I'm easily distracted and as soon as I hear another noise my mind instantly steers off track. So when it's time to begin a paper I have the television off, kids in another room, and even the fan on low so I don't hear the ticking. This is my main reason for taking this class online because the sound of other key boards clicking is a huge distraction for me. I also keep a cold beverage and a junk food item on the table next to me to make the situation exciting.
Strutting through the familiar, gate worn by time, I spread my arms, taking in the saccharine aroma of the fresh grass. The remaining glimmers of the sun glisten on every blade that peeks through the moist soil, composing a sea of sparkling beauty, only comparable to a poem. The meadow is breathtaking this evening, as the sun sets behind the trees in the distance, leaving a glow of pinks, peaches, ambers, and crimsons behind as if a bowl of fruit had exploded in the sky.
Do it, Emma. Get rid of the pain. I bit my lip, trying to resist the urge, but give in. I pick the sharp blade and place it above my left wrist. C'mon, don't you want to feel better? Tears stream down my face. I want to make things better, but will this actually help.. I exhaled and grazed the blade against my skin. Good. More. I give in again and cut deeper than before. The blood oozes out as little beads and falls onto white tiled floor, coating the floor with blood. I lower my gaze to the floor, taking in the numbness I feel. I take a deep breath, knowing that the adrenaline is kicking in. The feeling is a sort of high I'm addicted to, allowing me to forget everything at the moment. The pains spreads throughout my body to my fingertips to
After many years of writing essays for school assignments, I remember catching myself being stuck before writing wondering how to start the essay or what other details to include. Until now is when I know that it’s called Writer’s Block. Funny how before starting and during the journal I experienced writer’s block. When I experience writer’s block, I tend to pause for a couple of seconds or a few minutes to gather myself by taking a deep breath and concentrating without straining myself to think harder. Also, if I’m home and experiencing writer’s block, I’ll grab a snack or something to drink in order for me to at least get up walk a couple of step to get my blood flowing. While I walk I can also think about ideas for the essay, usually it
When I’m starting to write, it seems there are always distractions, e.g. my Dad has the TV on loud, the dogs are barking, etc. It’s difficult to focus, and makes it next to impossible for me to concentrate on the task at hand and carry out what I have set out to do.
Crawling up my throat in attempt to grab a hold of the words, anxiety fights. I manage to take control and force it to fall back and disappear into the empty soul inside of me.
King shrugged. “Well that's an unexpected thing to say to me, I didn't ever swear to be your partner in whatever your life long plans were.”
