Distribution of Quantitative Data: (Cups of Coffee) The purpose of my research was to see if there is an increase in energy levels with every cup of coffee consumed. The two histograms and boxplots summarize the distribution of each event. The shape of the distribution for the cups of coffee consumed is unimodal and positively skewed to the high end (the right). There were no outliers or unusual gaps however there was only one account of a person drinking between 6-8 cups. In this case, the median (2 cups) is the best alternative to summarizing the center of the distribution since the shape and modality is skewed. The mean (2.95 cups) does not give a clear idea of the average cups of coffee consumed. The Interquartile Range (2.2) is the most appropriate summary of spread for this distribution. It helps to display how much of the territory the middle half of the data covers. Distribution of Quantitative Data: (Energy Levels) The shape of the distribution for the energy levels is unimodal and negatively skewed to the lower end (the left). Like the cups of coffee data, there were also no outliers or unusual gaps. The median (3.5 energy level) is the better substitute to encapsulate the center of the distribution because the shape is skewed. The Interquartile Range (3.55) is the best summary of spread for this distribution. Unlike the standard deviation (1.666031), in this case, the IQR more closely measures the middle half of the data.
