Diversity is increasingly seen throughout the world and in specific Canada. I intend to focus on what diversity, assumption and ethnocentrism are and how in the nursing profession, it is important to be aware of these and the ways in which they all can hinder our nursing care. I will also focus on how we may need to find ways to accommodate diversities while providing care for clients, ways that assumption may hinder our nursing care or how some ethnocentric values may negatively influence our nursing care. Diversity According to Oregon State Universities Steering Committee, diversity is the concept that encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. This can include dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, religious beliefs, or other ideologies. It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual. (“Definition of Diversity”, n.d., 1999.). Being aware of all of these aspects of diversity while caring for clients is important, especially in our ever changing population. Diversity will enhance life as it teaches you to live with different types of people and teaches you how to get along with different types of people. In a diverse community we learn to build relationships with different people and groups. Diversity can enhance our life as we can see how people who haven’t got what we have, have to live and how what we have, we should be proud of and appreciative.

Diversity means respecting the difference in each person. The way in which the centre promotes diversity is when they look at each person individually, and come up with care plans in which ensures the best care for each person. This is needed because everyone is diverse (different) meaning each person will have different needs and need help in different areas. The centre puts into consideration the patient’s needs and adapts their care plan accordingly. For example, the centre came up with a very diverse care plan for Brenda Grey to improve her health wellbeing. The centre had to consider many things some of them being fitting in a health visitor whilst also having time to visit a GP. Brenda is also diverse because she didn’t want everyone ‘knowing her business’ therefor the centre had to also adapt and reassure her that nothing would be discussed with her knowing. Over the past 25 years, society has shifted dramatically in a new direction. The demographic makeup of the United States continues to change drastically. Because of this change, everyone will be required to become increasingly aware of the people in their surroundings. Some may argue that diversity is based on gender, sex, creed, origin, or some other form of tangible trait however; diversity is much more than that. The American Nurses Association produces the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing. This publication has written several scholarly articles about diversity and healthcare. The article, Many Faces, Campinha-Bacote, states “Diversity. It is a word that means something different to each and every person”. What a great definition. As I continue to do research I am seeing more and more information about diversity and other people’s definition of what it is. Diversity is the process where all individuals are respected and valued the same. This means within a health and social care setting all individuals care is not obstructed or compromised by their differences whether this race, religion or gender.
The Service Users i deliver care to are all different in many ways.This can be along the dimensions of gender, age, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, physical abilities, political beliefs, religious beliefs or other ideologies. This means that i have to be aware of a person’s individuality and respect their choices. To be understanding and not show prejudice. Valuing the benefits of someone being different from ourselves, not making assumptions.

The concept of cultural diversity is very near and dear to my heart, especially since I am of a mixture of races. Growing up in a Cuban/Jamaican household has definitely posed challenges for me throughout my life journey. Now, as a nurse I have a better understand on how cultural diversity can play a huge part in patient care. As the world is changing and people are marrying cultures together, it is imperative that we become sensitive to the needs of others in a world of diverse backgrounds.
Canada is a country composed of many different people from many different cultures including some native indigenous people, much like the United States. Similar to many other countries, Canada is attempting to become more culturally conscious and provide culturally-competent healthcare. According to Leininger and McFarland (2002), “there is an urgent need to integrate the many cultures of Canada into a harmonious, functioning society using sound cultural care research-based data in practice” (p. 494). Although the movement towards transcultural nursing care began in the 1960s when Leininger visited Canada to promote the study of transcultural nursing, it is still a work in progress as there are not a great number of nurses prepared by formal education to promote and develop transcultural nursing care (Leininger & McFarland, 2014). Canada’s current health care system is “publicly financed, but privately run” and based on the five founding principles that mandate the health care must be universal, portable, comprehensive, accessible and publicly administered (Cackett, Ferguson, & Irvine, 2005). The ten provinces within Canada are individually responsible for funding, developing and assessing the provisions of hospital care, providing salaries to health professionals and determining reimbursement for physician services (Cackett, Ferguson, & Irvine, 2005).
The concept of diversity is one that individuals may not think of when they think of nursing. Diversity is a major component to nursing and the care that is provided to patients. In this concept analysis, antecedent, attributes and consequences of diversity are identified. The following antecedents are: race, social economy, knowledge, gender, and education level. The attributes of diversity are individual, variety, perception, difference and civilization. Diversity is respecting and maintaining the dignity and privacy of clients recognizing issues associated with the identity needs of other service users as well as the clients own interpretation of dignity and respect and the right to express his/her own identity, culture and lifestyle.
We live in a society where people come from different countries, they belong to different cultural, religion, ethnic groups, and races. All these factors come together and contributes to differences that make us unique from each other. Hence, a multicultural country with huge diversity. This reflection journal will cover what “human race” is and what role it plays in ones’ personal life and in a nursing profession. Moreover, what bias, assumptions and judgements are, and how to avoid them. Lastly, what caring is and what role does it play in nursing.
