Having a Korean mother and Japanese father, I have had the privilege of being able to experience two different cultures throughout my entire life. I speak both Japanese and Korean fluently, and also understand both cultures at heart. Coming from this unique background, I naturally became interested in the relations between different countries and their cultures. Moreover, the experience of studying in Canada has allowed me to have the ability to work with and learn from cultural and religious diversity. I currently go to a Christian high school in Canada, and I have learned Christianity, which has been exceedingly eye-opening as my knowledge of religion expanded. At school, I am also a membership of Key Club, which is a internationally active student-led organization that provides its members with opportunities to provide service. I went to Cuba with the school band/choir on the first trip. We played for various community bands and orchestras and in turn they also played for us. On the second trip, I went to Thailand. I worked with HIV positive children at an orphanage in Chang Mai, distributed foods and supplies for the elderly in slums in Bangkok, and experienced living in a very remote village called Akha village and worked with the locals there. Both these images have helped us, in one way or another, try to interpret what could define this country. On the other hand, a Canadian could be a beer, a hockey-playing beaver or even a canoe floating in a summer day's sunset. A Canadian could also be a “sovereigntyphobe”, refusing to see the liquefaction, albeit political, of the second largest country in the world.

I was very excited when I saw this essay prompt because diversity is actually one of the main criteria that drew me into NC State. It is the assumption of many that Canada is a nation free of racism. Canadians pride themselves on being culturally diverse and accepting, and on having relatively progressive social policies such as that of universal healthcare. However, there are many ways in which the current and historical policies have expressed explicit racism that have left an already marginalized population with the crumbs of society. A prime example of this can be demonstrated in the mass overrepresentation of Aboriginal youth in care. By the year 2010, there were around twenty-seven thousand Indigenous children in the Canadian child welfare system who were living in some sort of out-of-home care (Chappell, 2014). Although they represented only seven percent of the children in Canada, they made up 48 percent of all children in foster care. (Yukselir & Annett, 2016). This phenomenon is not a recent trend, as it has been occurring since the very creation of modern child welfare in Canada as it is known, and it has its roots deep in Canadian history. A few years ago in Smalltown, CA a burning cross was placed in the lawn of a visible minority family. Although the media seemed shocked at this explicit racial attack and portrayed the attackers as a group of abnormal, twisted deviants, I was not surprised. As an Asian student who is writing her Sociology honours thesis on visible minorities in Canada, I know on a personal and academic level that racism in Canada does exist. Although explicit racial incidents are not a common occurrence, they do happen. Although the African American population is now the largest minority group, the Hispanic and Asian populations are growing much faster. In 1994, the African American population was estimated to be 33 million, or 12.7 percent of the total population, up from 11.7 percent in 1980.
