Diversity Experience
Diversity is a popular topic in today’s business world, but the definition of the word varies vastly between organizations. Some definitions are one sentence where others are a paragraph long. To add to the confusion, employees have their own ideas about diversity when entering the workforce that may collaborate with or contradict the organization’s explanation. This paper will compare and contrast four definitions concerning diversity to highlight the similarities and differences of the word according to national and international organizations. Also, the author will explore diversity categories in regard to her own experiences in life.

Through corporate partners, volunteers, and advocates, United Way brings awareness to several social economic pitfalls and develops solutions to battle the issues and provide support to persons in need (United Way, n.d.a). United Way’s (n.d.b) definition of diversity is: di·ver·si·ty (d-vûrs-t, d-) n.: the quality of being different or unique at the individual or group level. This includes age; ethnicity; gender; gender identity; language differences; nationality; parental status; physical, mental and developmental abilities; race; religion; sexual orientation; skin color; socio-economic status; work and behavioral styles; the perspectives of each individual shaped by their nation, experiences and culture—and more. Even when people appear the same on the outside, they are different! (para. 3)
In short, United Way’s explanation of diversity is the unique qualities and traits of people make each person different in some way even if they were identical twins.
