Introduction
Diversity; a small word with a large meaning. Diversity is present in all aspects of our lives. Whether we are talking about culture, race, ethnicity, gender, or even sexual orientation we are talking about diversity. Diversity is not always looked at in a positive manner but without diversity we would all be the same. We would all be normal; no one would have unique backgrounds or interesting life stories. Our society is built on diversity and the individualism of our population. The purpose of this paper is to explain what diversity means to me personally and how it has influenced my life, and to show and explain how the common read book Boy Meets Depression written by Kevin Breel is built off of diversity in our everyday lives.

When I think of the word diversity, I think of culture, religion, race, religion, and background. Diversity means to mean being able to observe and learn from others that have grown up in a completely different setting and are accustomed to other ways of life. Diversity to me means being different, but not divided. Diversity is a way in which we can appreciate those who are different and open our minds to learn and love what they have to bring to our society or community. Diversity is not entirely based upon race, diversity includes people that have different backgrounds and different stories and life experience than others. Diversity allows us to expand our horizons and see things from others perspective. To me, diversity means the ability to grow and connect with others and expand your knowledge of the world’s cultures, diversity means not to judge but to appreciate. Diversity is exciting and brings fun to our lives. Being able to relate to others that our different from ourselves helps shape our personalities and who we truly are as human beings. Without diversity we would all be the same. We would all be normal and normal is boring. Diversity is a challenge but not in a negative way. I have not gone through deep depression like Kevin has but there are certain aspects of our lives that our similar. A large aspect of Kevin’s life that I can personally relate to is having divorced parents. Having divorced parents has sent me in and out of sadness and the feeling of being alone since I was three years old. Having divorced parents has made every single aspect of my life more difficult whether it be deciding where to go on holidays or something as simple as where I am going to stay for the weekend when I come home from college, everything is twice as difficult. I would do anything to have a normal functioning family, or even just a normal Christmas. I also relate to Kevin in the sense of lacking self-confidence, and have a low self-esteem. I was not like Kevin in the sense that he was a skinny, straggly child but I was the chubby child. Throughout elementary school I had been made fun of once and awhile but I just tried to laugh it off in the moment. Deep down inside those feeling truly hurt my heart. I can remember times where I felt like my life had no sense of direction when I was only eleven or twelve years old. Looking back, that is an extremely scary thought that children of that age can have such negative thoughts about their lives and themselves. Another way I can relate to Kevin is that he lost his best friend in an important part of his life. I lost my grandpa

Diversity can be differences in race, heritage, customs, belief systems, physical appearance, mental capabilities; etc Diversity should be respected and valued because nobody is completely the same as anyone else, even within the categories above. People tend to reject what is different. We must value our diversity in order to work together.
What diversity means to me is each and every individual in this world is unique. No one is the same so that’s why learning about new cultures, languages, lifestyles, religion, beliefs and traditions is enjoyable for humans. If everyone were the same, life would be boring. The unique characteristics that people possess can be vastly different. I have an open mind and am willing to be educated by people with different cultures because it gives the opportunity to gain increased knowledge about their lives. When people are accepting of others that’s when you have a better chance to

Diversity will enhance life as it teaches you to live with different types of people and teaches you how to get along with different types of people. I believe that "Diversity" plays important roles in our lives. Without diversity, we cannot widen our field of view. Diversity helps us to open up our eyes and our world. From reading the essay "How diversity makes us smarter", written by Katherine W Phillips, I learned that there are some negative effects brought up by the social diversity where dialog of inclusion is advanced, but mostly diversity is something that has positive effect in our society and even individual. I could also reflect and make connection with my experience of moving from non diverse community to diverse community.
